England has much more in common with Germany than the US, the country which our politicians never cease to suck up to. The English race originates from the germanic Anglo-Saxon tribes.
At the crossing of the Rhine a GI captured a German soldier and had to take him back, but the bridiges were all one way just then. They sat on a rock as wave after wave of aircraft came overhead to bomb his country. After an hour the aircraft stopped coming, and the German spat into the dust. 'Phar', he said, 'Propaganda'.
Yeah, we can do that to non Germans. Reason most of them don't get our humour. You still ignore the fine point that you simply could have kept your mouth shut and looked all the wiser. Instead you continue to provide a incoherent rant on German comedy in a vain attempt to impress while only providing evidence you have no clue what you are talking about. Sorry mate, the rest of the world is larger than you and gives a wide birth to many things as local as German entertainment. Still no cookie.
I don't care if Henning Wehn is some English guy stereotyping Germans: either it's funny attendant racism; or, he's really German and just incredibly fucking funny!!
Can't you see that Carr clearly didn't fully appreciate that Hehning's joke was self-parody.
This failure to get Hehning's schtick is obvious from the redundancy of Carr's follow up comments (ie the gag has already been made by Hehning, just in a far more humourous and subtle way).
Henning Wehn is a great comedian whom I'd never heard of till now. So, thank you very much for posting this clip!
If you'll permit to return the favour..... please check out Pablo Francisco, a US stand-up who also deals with national stereotypes (as well as doing excellent impersonations of celebrities).
The UK and Germany as such close countries - people forget this due to WW1&2 and the anti-german propaganda. The German sense of humor is very similar to ours, even down to the extremes of innuendo and smut at one end and high wit and satire at the other. I love the German sense of humor
@forducksco wow dude, awesome post. In fact English is based on German. The differences in humour may have developed from the fact that the Germans incorporate the locative tense hence a lot of English jokes (then I got off the bus etc) don't work in German.
@forducksco I was hitchhiking across Germany and was picked up by this couple, the husband was German, the woman English. We got listening to music, and the English woman asked her husband what music he liked when he was a teenager. 'I'm German,' he said, and sighed. 'We just march.'
@forducksco That's no true. This guy is by far the exception. Every other German comedian, successful in Germany, is doing material which might have been fashionable on 2nd division comedy shows in the early 80s in the UK.
@kMondrakken The cabaretists are even worse, and thankfully you dont even get this medium in the UK. Middle aged women singing none funny songs about the menopause. No thanks.
@kMondrakken Sorry but I'm not German so I dont have to make do with the miserable standard of the German entertainment industry. I was once stuck on a train ride to Berlin with a woman called Gayle Tufts who has some success as a cabaretist even though she's not German. In her home country she probably couldn't even get arrested never mind a career in entertainment.
cool, name calling. That makes you convincing...from what you say I gather you have no clue what cabaret and the difference to comedy actually is. Gayle Tufts is not a caberetists. As said, the difference is more pronounced in content in germany.
@kMondrakken I didnt resort to name calling. My name calling is about as unreal as humerous German cabaretists. Even the fact we're discussing such a pointless none entity is rather sad. Usually great comedy is exported across the globe whether it be Monty Python's or Seinfeld. German cabaret is as utterly unappealing to the rest of the world as German volksmusik. That's not my opinion, it's a fact. And why do you think that is? ;-)
So since you do it again you admit you have no clue what name calling means? Btw: You are abandoning your line of argument. So you admit you were wrong? Uncorrelated statement do not make an argument btw. So in trolling you get a B+
@kMondrakken You should lay off the crack pipe my friend. Or is it simply that your English is so poor? When I said it wasn't my opinion.....I meant not my opinion alone you fool, the rest of the world shares it too. And saying something is unappealing isnt't name calling. Calling you a fool is. But I think you just cant resist proving me right about that. ;-)
@Internetpolice666 Baseless claims are baseless so is an opinion supposedly not yours alone. It's not really much of an argument. That you resort to ad hominem is kind of proof of a lack of argument there. case in point: Do you think anyone non English lacks humour because virtually no non English entertainment gets exported (maybe except Spanish). So the spread as lingua franca determines this, not first and foremost quality.
So: Empirical proof that the rest of the world shares your opinion.
@kMondrakken I suppose the fact Henning Wehn chose not to be a comedian in Germany was a coincidence....right? German entertainment is notoriously bad and rarely gets exported whether music, TV, films or comedy. Yet another fact. But entertainment from Scandanavia does, even though English is not their first language. Just face it....German comedy is atrocious, and German Cabaret as an artform...doesn't even exist in other countries. It's simply the death rattle of a country without swagger.
It's fun how you wiggle yourself through your "facts". You haven't stated one so far. You understand that Wenning's comedy spin wouldn't work in germany, do you? It is entirely born out of your stereotype of germany. So Scandivanians export English entertainment? Hmmm... I wonder what the actual fact about this is...
Just because you are randomly jumping around so much. Are we talking entertainment or comedy now? You seem to use whatever fancies you atm to make some non-point
@kMondrakken Congratulations on being exactly the type of German Henning Wehn stereotypes.....pedantic, thorough and utterly humourless. Until there is an Olympics For Comedy, I can't empirically prove German comeday, music and entertainment in general is shite...I can only offer you the fact the rest of the world gives it a wide birth mostly. Why do you think that is? That's quite a large fact. Just because you pretend to misunderstand that doesn't make it any less relevant. :-)
@Internetpolice666 As most German comedian are, indeed, just as mediocre as Mr. Wehn, I appreciate his decision to leave the country and I would be even more grateful if there were less videos of him on Youtube. But what applies to German comedy in general doesn't to a number of really brilliant comedians. I wonder if you've ever heard of them and if you could follow their performance, for it's all in German, you know, and not always in standard German.
@SiggiNebel I know enough of German comedy to realise it's utterly appalling. It's the same as German music and German films.... Sadly Germany is about 30 years behind when it comes to entertainment. :-)
There are lots of excellent German movies and German bands. Concerning German music: Have you ever heard of Beethoven, Bach, Wagner, Orff, etc.? You should get some education before you write stupid comments!
@TelumehtarOriOn I see you don't bother to name any excellent contemporary German bands...and stick with the long dead. But German film and music had their day and are now a hollow broken shell of what they used to be driven by commercialism and short term profit. But if propping up the past makes you feel better....please by my guest.
lol, propping up the past is something English people love to do. I don't know many English contemporary bands. Why should I mention some German movies or bands? You are an ignorant fool and you don't want to know any German bands or movies.
@TelumehtarOriOn You just admitted you dont know many Contemporary English bands...yet I'm ignorant. You really are a deluded moron. I know more or less every German band and movie released in the last 15 years and about 1 in a 10000 have even the slightest of merit. German films barely get nominations in international festivals and about 3 German bands sell any records outside the country. That's not my opinion....it's a fact. So run along now.
Jep, you are an ignorant. I know bands from many countries, I also know some English bands, but most of these English bands are overrated. However, England had good bands in the past like the Beatles, Oasis, Blur, Stones, Led Zep and the bands of NWOBHM. But these days are over. This is strange: If you don't like German movies, why do you watch all of them?!? German movies got many nominations in international festivals, you can google it.
I don't think that you know any German movie. German bands aren't that famous outside of the German speaking world because of the language. The quality of the music is not the reason. It's just a stupid stereotype that Germany doesn't have good bands. We are the home of the world's greatest composers and we still produce good music.
@TelumehtarOriOn Loads of German bands sing in English you tit. And not one has any success outside the country apart from the ever dreadful Baseballs who are a novelty band. Unlike Scandanavian bands who enjoy loads of success internationally. And there you go banging on about the past again. Germany is good at making cars and chemicals these days. Get over it. You just sound like a desperate sad clown.
@TelumehtarOriOn And that was surely an example of German humour was it? Hardly Oscar Wilde. But don't get me wrong, Germany has it's good points, just humour isn't one of them. Merry Christmas to you too.
@TelumehtarOriOn How could I not understand it...it's so banal and crude. It reminds me mostly of the stuff you found in the UK in the early 80s. Simple, situational and above all utterly dated when you re-watch it. Look at all these shows like Peep Show, The Office (which Germans stole and turned it into a crappy sitcom), The Mighty Boosh, Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle, 15 Storeys High. There's nothing like that in Germany at all. All very subtle, ironic and black.
@Internetpolice666 To say it again: Mr. Wehn actually is just German comedy standard, average. There are are in fact many worse comedians in Germany, but you can find dozens like him, quite a number who are better and a few who are brilliant. It seems to me that you only know Mario Barth and maybe "Cindy aus Marzahn".
@SiggiNebel Mario Barth is dreadful. It's mainstream slapstick. Most German people I know hate him with a vengeance. Cindy Aus Marzahn is just lame fringe comedy. If you like that crap it's no wonder you dont appreciate the dryness of Mr Wehn. It's like talking to a dog about ballet.
@Internetpolice666 Of course, I've chosen the worst I could think of and I'd thought you'd get it. I'm a bit disappointed, actually. As you don't comment the other names I've mentioned, I assume you really don't know them. (Do you know, btw."Hitler's Leasing contract" (here on YT)? It's the original sound of a Gert Polt sketch and and someone had the idea to dub Hitler with it; there's a version with English subtitles)
@SiggiNebel Are you living in an alternative fantasy world. You didnt mention any other names. And let's face it....Germany is famous for it's turgid clunking slapstick humour. Which is probably why Mr Wehn moved to the UK.
I've met witty Germans before. I think the Germans supposed lack of humour is similar to the lazy stereotype that Americans don't understand irony. What utter bollocks!
i dont know where all this comes from. i never suspected he was anything but german. i think english speakers think that english speakers have a monopoly on humour. they should get out more. it must be rock hard to be funny in another language but wehn and many other comedians and non comedians prove that its possible. for me its like a big gold star for the human race :D
Henning is actually English. His real name is Peter Lane. He used to date my sister; was hilarious in his normal accent too but the German things worked a treat.
He's English! His Mum is called Maureen and his Father, Arthur. He eats scones on crumpets on black-pudding on Yorkshire Pud. He's as English as they come you donut!
I liked FAQ U and remember taping (oh yeah, vhs like a crazy bitch) all three weeks worth of episodes, but have never found the tapes again! So thanks for this :D

Henning is actually English. His real name is Peter Lane. He used to date my sister; was hilarious in his normal accent too but the German things worked a treat.
Jimmal001 4 years ago
if that were to be true, he would be the FIRST englishman EVER to master the art of speaking German without the smallest trace of an accent.
do not fool yourself. somebody who can say "silke rottenberg" and "frohes neues jahr" in PERFECT german is not English.

Are you kidding; like I said, he's hilarious. The whole thing is a stunt, almost genius, maybe actual genius.

Look up the references on his wikipedia article. He's German, end of story.

He's English! His Mum is called Maureen and his Father, Arthur. He eats scones on crumpets on black-pudding on Yorkshire Pud. He's as English as they come you donut!
Jimmal001 3 years ago
You might be right about the crumpets and black pudding but the Süddeutsche article says he was born in Hagen and baptised in sauerkraut.
