I wish I could have seen how you tied the rope between the legs, but your body blocked everything you were doing. I could see how you undid the knot on the left foot, but watching the actual tieing from the front, would have been very useful. Thanks for doing this. Nice mare.
All of my horse are hobble broke, I use cotton to start em so they don't panic and get hurt! It's just too handy to pass up, they learn some patience and as others have said they learn to stand still when something is about their legs instead of panicking, one of my mares got tangled in a neighbors discarded wire and instead of fighting and hurting herself she just stood quietly. Save her legs and a bad wreck!
@borgomozzano I guess you would spend more time preparing that nervous horse now wouldn't you. Personally , I think it is one of the best things you can teach a horse and it makes a better broke horse and could in fact save it's life. I would not recommend someone who doesn't have solid horsemanship skills doing this unless they are accompanied by an experienced horseman.
@randomblond92 Helps your horse if they get tangled in a fence, they don't thrash and kill themselves they wait for you to get them out. teaches them not to panic.
Maybe someone should hobble you... A horse is not a toy!!!
A horse would run away, if it's getting scared. You break the mind of yout horse, because it can not run away because of the hobbling and because you'r holding it -.-
@SarahMcKenzie Yeah, you know, you could also break the nose or jaw with simple bridles, even hackamores, maybe we should ban equitation altogether ;)
Hobbling is a preventative measure. You train them like this with the horse under close supervision so that if you're on trail or in the barn and the horse gets its leg caught, it doesn't freak out and get all sorts of broken bones and other pleasantries.
@justwatchthedamvideo I read on another page about hobbling horses that it is a preventative measure. It can teach the horse not to freak out when they get something wrapped around their legs such as barbed wire from a fence. Teach them with a rope while you're watching so they don't kill themselves or you out in the pasture or on the trail.
@erskin2005 oh ya now i see my old teacher did that with her stallion, he got his leg caught n a high tensile fence or so the story goes and he just sat down and waited for her, cool thanks!
@justwatchthedamvideo no problem....I never really thought about doing it for that reason until I watched some videos about it, but now I'm kinda interested in doing it to my filly just in case we get in a bad situation on the trail with a vine or who knows what.
Allot of horses in the English riding system aren't hobbled, if people in the industry would look at the facts before accusing hobbeling as cruel, then thousands of horses who've had their feet caught might of been saved.
Hi my horse was hobbled by his first owner and they were not careful actually they abused him mant times and he has about a 6 in long scar about 5 in above his hooves. Also it goes in about 2 in deep. He was also hit in the mouth with a 2x4 and is missing a tooth. He is know a english hunter jumper and he is doing great we place in 5 finals out of five!!!
Fucking bulshit ! to the coment from dodgebrawl, it is cruel, and why not just tye the horse to a fence asshole!!

Thumbs up if you thought he was gonna put a plank between the horses legs and hit it with a sledge.

Very calm trainer but I personally do not agree with what he is doing. A nervous horse could easily break its legs.

I have always hobbled my horses while Elk hunting. it allows them to move around and graze but they can't get too far.

Would it be even safer to teach the horse to lead by the leg front and hind first.

When starting to train your horse for hobbles, would it be good to maybe use feed as a distraction? Or hobbled when they are being fed?
Roxanneify 2 years ago
very nice. it would be nice to see more horses who are nicely hobble trained. makes for a safer more well mannered horse.
