Had this cold call at work every day. The cold calls are carried out on behalf of the company and so the first people you speak with do not work for that company. They have no interest to be polite with you because they don't care if you want the service or not. To stop such calls tell the operator you are interested in the product/service and that operator will then put you through to someone who does work for the company. You can then get them to stop the calls.
Just about to write what happened to me but saw that I already wrote it a year ago :-)

Agreed; if someone is going to actually press "2", the telemarketer should be at least a little pleasant.

Thats extraordinary. Its irrelevant that you were attempting a prank call in fact, you could have been quite genuine at that point. What a bitch!
