COULD SOMEBODY EXPLAIN TO ME WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRUM CORPS AND MARCHING BANDS? I AM A HBCU BAND MEMBER AND I LOVE THIS STYLE OF PLAYING. BESIDES THE TRUMPETS SCREAMING ITS VERY MUCH DIFFERENT FROM MY STYLE OF PLAYING IN THE HBCU WORLD AND IM LOVING IT
@DUVALDALLASFAN A Drum Corp is very similar to a band in the sense that they perform field shows, where they differ is that Drum Corps only marches brass and percussion as opposed to brass, wood winds, and percussion. Also, the activity takes place during summer with camps usually starting around this time of year and it's a lot more intense, all of the Corps strive for nothing less than perfection.
@DUVALDALLASFAN Drum corps is a prfessional band, you have to audition, and then pay a sum just to play with them. These bands consist of many ages from say 16+. These bands are brass and drum bands only... they tour the country and the world....
@uubboy14 G's are lower toned, but much more louder, and apparently harder to tune. The reason why everyone wants them to go back to G's is because they literally melt your face off. I've had the pleasure of marching them in the Blue Stars a while ago, they are fun. But, unfortunately Bb's are in the picture now, which unless you're watching Carolina Crown, there is a difference in sound.
We all have the fucking Cadets to thank for the Bb horns. I wish a few directors would admit to the truth that G horns are the only way to go for drum corps and go back!
I kinda agree with the whole G horn thing. They def felt nice. But if this can't happen ever again, I think they should at least be playing Kanstul Mariachi horns on the feels. They sound scary close to a G Bugle on the field.
@Jonathan, I played lead sop in that line in 96, we were still playing G horns. I remember recording that in the parking lot like it was yesterday :-)
@jonathancraik14 This is definitely using Gs. listen to the pap they are churning out in the 2009 version of this. This is so much better and sounds completely different.
@rob33cherry This was seriously recorded on Bb horns with the 2003 hornline with Scott Dean playing lead. Trust me. Unlike you, I am never wrong. Anyone with half a brain can listen to this and know they didn't use G's. Yes 2009 sounds different but that's because the arrangement itself was different. Learn your crap before you go trolling.
Phantom Regiment and the Blue Devils each have the passion of Drum Corps. That is why no matter where they go it's like family to them. You can just feel the sensation in thier music. Phantom Regiment and the Blue Devils have the best horn lines in the world!
@MarineBugler I agree this, was so much better when they played this balls to the wall in 92. Their 92 show is one of my favorites, and that's saying a lot seeing as I'm an SCV guy lol.
@MarineBugler DCI doesn't need anymore money :P that's why there aren't as many corps don't exist anymore because of the costs lol. BUT I WOULD LOVE THIS TOO! :) that would be awesome :D
thanks for putting all these great vids up here. Have you checked out the bopster? I put that up.....
Blue Devils Bopster 91. Can you link it to your page?
BTW this isnt 92....sounds like it. I have a recording Ill put that we did at pavillion with Steve Houghton (Bob Curnow Big Band) on Kit. We also played Dave Weckl's festival de ritmo. You can tell it's not 1992 because we didnt learn that ending until we were on tour. The original ending had the right idea but needed refining.
Correction....... This recording was performed by the 1996 Blue Devils Hornline featuring Roger Carter on set. This performance was on G Bugles and by 2000, BD was on Bb horns. Trust me...I was there to experience the transition. Much respect to you and the original members that played this song.
Thanks man, I enjoy listening to it everytime its played. Now its goose bumps on this side of the horn if you know what I mean. Or as Jerry Seawright put it, "ducky bumps".
Makes me proud to play the trumpet. And also is there anyplace to get sheet music for this??
