It wasn't actually a well. It was the pit where they threw children who were deemed to weak to survive. Very symbolic.. "you're weak and unfit to live." The whole thing was to send a message to Xerxes. That Sparta spits on them and does not consider them worthy adversaries. The fact that it only took 300 Spartans to hold back an army of 10,000 men for days on end was the exclamation point at the end of a very long, yet laconic insult.
