Who cares if it meant breasts in Spanish. For crap's sake we have a restaurant called Hooters and their not even shy about showing off the fact that it's slang for breasts.
Never had the chance to go here. We had one in Kitchener, ON, in the late 80s, early 90s. After it closed down, they turned it into a bar & grill called Cactus Rose. Then after THAT went under, it became Jack Astors, which is what it still is, today.
I loved the HELL out of Chi-Chi's restaurant!! This was my very favorite place to go for special occasions. Their food was incredible; I still remember the smells and tastes of it. A few of my favorites were this DELICIOUS salsa made from chopped tomatoes and cilantro, their warm and crispy chips, and this sweet and yummy Mexican cornbread dish that came alongside most of their entrees. The last time I ate there was for my birthday in 2001.I was heart-broken when they all closed down!! ;-(
Chi Chis will always be my all time favororite restaurant. I really miss those piled high Texas nachos, El Grande burro, the Cancun seafood enchiladas, the corncake, and the fried ice cream. At least there is still Don Pablos which serves similar style Mexican food, but we don't have one in our town. But mostly all we have now are restaurants that are carbon copies of one another - Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Logans, Ruby Tuesday's, and Applebees. All serve boring food you can fix at home.
I used to like to go to Chi-Chi's, and I don't care that the name is Spanish slang for tits (shame on any adult who calls breasts "boobies" and isn't talking to a small child). Their fried ice cream was great, and so was their flan. As for the "bad service", name me one mid-price sit-down restaurant nowadays that gives consistently good service. They're ALL guilty of it - Outback, Bugaboo Creek, Uno's, Macaroni Grille, Chili's, Applebee's, TGIFriday's, all of them.
Chi-Chi's is still in operation in foreign countries, such as Belgium. As for America, only their grocery products survived and everything else went kapoot. Hormel Foods bought the Chi-Chi's grocery brand, and that's the reason why you still see salsa in stores with the name Chi-Chi's.
What a shame they disappeared. They were a regular stop for our family. My favorite was the seafood crepes, called the Cancun. I haven't found a reasonably priced replacement yet.
Oh my god I miss this restaurant so much. My high school spanish teacher told us it was a bastardization of Mexican food, but I don't care it was delicious!

besides the hepatitis the reason why chi chis closed in my opinion is bad service. We almost always got bad service every time we went to the local one. Since the service never got better I am glad that chi chis is now gone for the most part. Maybe crapplebees is next to die
I hear ya all...worked at 2 diff. ones from 86to 2000--miss everything about it. I know they were about to declare bankruptcy; a co. from CA was to buy up the name, rights, etc., and the gr. onions was the icing on the cake. Hepatitis, PA, sad and unfortunate.
oh man I am really craving their food right now...they had the best cheese nachos and their fried ice cream was the very very best. don pablos can't touch them!!
I worked there off and on through high school and college and for sure it was a fun place to work - the management was pretty lax. The last ones around Detroit closed only about 3-4 years ago. The one where I worked in HS is now Cheeseburger in Paradise and the Bonefish Grill - they made two restaurants out of the building. A few are still sitting in the west suburbs waiting for buyers.
The one I mentioned above has finally been purchased and is about to become "Floyd's Bar & Grill". There is yet another in Springfield, VA that's attached to a mall that's still sitting there abandoned.
No, they don't. All the locations were closed about 10 years ago when Outback Steakhouse bought the chain. That was my second-favorite restaraunt. What's really creepy is that the one I used to go to is still sitting empty. I pass it quite often.
Great fact! I did not know that OS took over the ChiChi's restaurant chain. I've been to OS a few times, but I don't ever remember eating at ChiChi's. I was a kid during the ChiChi's era.
Yeah, they did. Initially, Outback Steakhouse, Inc. bought the chain (the restaurants, the recipes, the whole thing) and they were going to take the old Chi-Chi's Restaurants and turn them into Outback Steakhouses. For whatever reason, they decided against it and instead sold them to Kimco Realty. Kimco allowed all the locations to sit empty.
My parents met at the Portland Chi-Chi's in 1982. My mom was a waitress. I might not be alive without Chi-Chi's!

Man, their commercials were probably very successful. The food, for starters, looks very appetizing, and the ads were well made.

I think it's wise to avoid any restaurant that advertises $5 all you can eat specials.
Even though those were 1995 prices ..eugh.
