Singapore has strict laws regarding drugs, violence, and cleanliness. As a result they have hardly any drug use, next to no crime, and are the cleanest city in the world. The US is really lenient and that's why the cities are filled with crime, drugs, and filth. Singapore is nothing like North Korea. Singapore's really prosperous and its laws revolve around common sense that almost everybody around the world agrees with, only punishment is strict so no one thinks about violating the laws.

I don't agree with many things in Singapore such as censorship, gender discrimination, and the lack of gay rights. However, I do like the over the top punishments for what I believe should be crimes. If you rape someone why shouldn't you be beaten? If you're going to try and destroy the society by selling drugs why shouldn't you be put to death? Harsh punishments are there for a good reason, to preserve society and stop all but the extremely stupid from committing crimes.

I traveled about 20 countries and this is the worst, smelliest and dirty country among so called developed country. Local do not know how to maintain the clean state but maid and cheap labor from other countries are used to clean up. So if you go where local lives mainly, it is so bad... In other country, local do the cleaning by themselves since they are proud of what kind of community they lives.
Sometimes it's good to have such strict laws imposed. It increases Singaporeans' discipline. However, others might disagree as they feel such laws are too harsh and that Singaporeans have no freedom as compared to many European countries, or USA.

Singapore has strict laws regarding drugs, violence, and cleanliness. As a result they have hardly any drug use, next to no crime, and are the cleanest city in the world. The US is really lenient and that's why the cities are filled with crime, drugs, and filth. Singapore is nothing like North Korea. Singapore's really prosperous and its laws revolve around common sense that almost everybody around the world agrees with, only punishment is strict so no one thinks about violating the laws.

It took them FAR LONGER and these such 'harsh and barbaric' laws were in place for a MUCH LONGER period of time to get them where they are now, and to be able to afford to relax them. The law is after all a living document, Singapore has not yet come of age to move to Western standards.

@MrJonslife Try publishing your remarks in the Straits Times, or speak publicly, and see what might happen to you. Sorry but you DO NOT have the freedom to do so. Only some websites are blocked at this time, but apparently you have not heard that bloggers have been arrested and jailed for speaking out. But, I think you do know what happens to those that oppose the government by writing or speaking out. If you like I will cite SEVERAL outrageous examples of this tyrannical repressive regime.

Those people who call singapore totalitarian/authoritarian regimes, obviously they have not been to the Middle East, North Korea before coming to Singapore to realise that Singapore is just as normal as other 'democratic' countries. Obviously your thoughts and views have been distorted by all the negative views about singapore. 2.1 million foreigners live in singapore. Out of 5 million. They chose here. WHY? If they knew singapore was that bad and babaric a nation, nobody would have come.

@MrJonslife How many foreigners were made instant citizens????? Singapore has one of the HIGHEST emigration rates in the world with thousande of its people leaving, and many more wanting to migrate. I wonder why??? As a blogger wrote recently: Perhaps Singapore should join forces with its Natural partners Zimbabwe, N. Korea, and Burma. Of course I will add ,,,,Communist China of which Singapore is nothing more than its clone. Foreigners come make money and L E A V E. Reason=MONEY=GREED

@sandye2100 Then why don you ask the foreigners why they leave their own country too? They leave because of the the same reason as Singaporeans leaving their homeland, money and greed. And not because they have no freedom of speech or because they are tightly controlled by the gov. Gosh. My whole life as a Singaporean, I know my country better than you all. @MrJonslife Facts are Singapore has an "alarmingly" high emigration rate in the world-Reasons debateable- I maintain many leave precisely because of problems with the government including, many young males because of the requirement of NS. Yes Singaporeans are ruled by fear, terror and death and are afraid to speak out, and yes are indoctrinated or "brainwashed" into being submissive believing cruelty and violent brutal treatment is somehow the norm. The Internet is/will be the governments peril

@sandye2100 Caning babaric? Of course I believe its babaric. I too believe the gov should ban caning and death penalty. Singaporeans are generally well-educated and we always debate about such topics in schools. But because Singapore rose from a third world society to the country we have today in such a short time, we need time to adjust. If they ban these acts immediately, I am sure the crime rates will rise. Some cities in US still practise death penalty anyway. Its just not widely publicised.

@MrJonslife Barbaric-Yes, but many Singaporeans will endlessly and tirelessly attempt to defend, though it cannot be justified, this evil tradition as well as a MANDATORY death penalty requirement that is only befitting a third world society. Singapore may very well need "time" to adjust to civilized practices, but these acts are Increasing. Yes some states in USA unfortunately disgustingly still have the death penalty, but pressure is great to abolish it-and it is Not Mandatory

I do not litter in Singapore, it is not OK. But it is ok to litter in other countries. The police in other countries does not even care if I litter and jaywalk right in front of them.

This vid is true but only in the major streets like Orchard rd. I stayed in Katong for a month and I saw alot of spitting on the streets, smoking and trash on the streets.
