out of curiousity, say i have to resin parts and i made them seprately and want to combine the two to each other. Do I use a glue or reheat part of the resin and attach?
I don't get it, I know somebody who make little Resin roses and uses a mold. I guess she uses a silicone one, because I haven't seen a plastic rose mold yet. But the subscription (?) says you can't put silicone molds in the oven!
Lets say I want to do clear gems with an image behind it. Would I put the resin in the mold and rest the image on the back or would i glue it to the back of the finished resin like you did with the shiny paper?
No, I've never tried adding acrylic paint. I find that I can sometimes color resin stones by adding an enamel glaze (or some metal flake paint) to the outside of the gem.
No. You have to make them. (I use styrene plastic sheets which I line with mailing tape to make a smooth surface. ) The hardest part is cutting and fitting the plastic pieces together so they make a "bowl" shape into which you can pour the resin. (And pray it doesn't leak.)
I've had problems with silicone molds---polyester resin won't set in them and clear epoxy resin jewels cast with silicone have this non-shiny surface that I can't coat with sealant. (It just beads up.) If anyone knows how to get around that, I would be grateful.
I want to do jewlery making with wire no-a-days. But I want to put certain pictures on certian clear gems and charms but before I go out and buy the material I want to know if it's worth it.
#1) I suppose it can if you were to cast it in a lens shape. I don't know how you'd do that though. (It may be possible to buy ready-made pendants or picture holders with lenses on them that you just insert a picture into.)
#2) No.
#3) It depends on how many you want to make. Larger bottles of resin can cost upwards of 20-30 dollars (not counting molds and dyes.)Even a small package of clearcast epoxy will cost you 8-10 dollars.
I won't by dyes. But I woudln't know how to go about finding something that bends like a lense. And I have no idea what a 'diamond' drill is, I just know the electric one we have with the spiral bit.
Yeah. Best just to find a mold that has those shapes in the first place. (Michael's has one that has heart and other shapes, but I don't know where you'd be able to find stars...)
oh my goodness, i have been trying to figure out what is used & how...FANTASTIC, thanks.. thank you 4 taking time to post..i want to try this with my kids..so fun.. :)
Well, a canister of polyester resin could run you about 20 dollars (plus catalyst and resin dye, and you could be talking about 30-40 dollars for the initial startup--but you'd have enough resin to make a lot of gems.)
Castincraft's Easycraft clear epoxy resin might make a cheap alternative if you only want to buy a small amount.
It does, but you have to be really careful with it to make the surface perfectly smooth. (There are other methods for making a custom mold as well, but they depend on the kind of shape that you want to make.)
Maybe 5 bucks. It depends... You can try offering them for sale online although you'll find it most cost effective to just do custom orders and not try to mass produce gems.
Hey im from the uk and well im not too sure where to find the items you mentioned i would need do you have any idea what kinda shops i would need to look in to find the resin, dyes and moulds ?
I'm a huge anime fan and first time cosplayer and though I cant sew to save my life I am DYING to try creating a decent weapon or staff from my favourite characters and your website and videos are what has given me the info/inspiration that i need to get started & have a real go. There aren't too many people who'd be willing to give away these secrets so a big THANK YOU! I'll be bugging my parents to buy me your books for my birthday (april 16th!) PS do you ship to Australia? Do you take PayPal?
There could be many factors affecting this: the temperature, the humidity, or the age of the resin that you're working with. If you can, I'd recommend using plastic paint trays as molds (or modeling clay, if you need something that's custom-shaped. I haven't done much gem-resin casting with latex so I don't know much about that. -_-)
Thank you for the video! Because you have to mix the resin with a catalyst, the stuff is pretty long-lasting, right? I'd hate to buy a whole bottle of it only for it to be not usable a few months later when I need it for another costume. @_@
Also, have you ever experimented with other dying agents for resin? Like rit or food color? Just curious. ^_^
Michael's also has a clear epoxy resin now called EasyCast. It takes longer to sure than polyester resin but has no sticky surface when it's done. You might want to give it a try...
I can't speak for online, but I just got back from Micheal's and it cost me about 35 bucks. I saw a resin mold but didn't know otherwise how to make it at first, that was what made me interested in finding out how to do this. As we speak I now have my first experimental batch hardening.
It's videos like this that make youtube what it is. Thank you.
Well, my first batch came out pretty good. A very little bit of white chalkyness on the back. I think I used too much catalyst.
I tried again today though, and the resin keeps eating through the cups. Plastic dixie party cups. 8 oz.. Is there a good active forum for this activity?
so that is how staryu was made 0_0

why not just use a craft metal leaf when the resin is still tacky on the back?? then you don't get the cloudyness that comes with the hot glue.

Like Ciel from Kuroshitsuji's family crest ring right? If you draw an image onto the board it'd work the same. There'd just be an image there.

have you ever thought of using Super77 instead of hot glue?
beshem 2 years ago
The hotglue works well. (I don't use superglues because those have a tendency to eat the foil.)

So what if I wanted it clear like no color? Do I just not add no dye too it? And also how would I make a hole in it, if I wanted yo make a necklace.
peionastick 2 years ago
@peionastick yeah...just don't add any dye...also, in order to get a hole through it, use a power drill with a small bit very carefully
