  • The 2nd engine looks like a YN1 paint scheme. Is it (I'm not good at naming paint scheme names lol)

  • @ThePPPTrainAndCarFan You're right. It is YN1.

  • @RailWolf7306 trainman122 said there are only 3 YN1 Paint Schemes in CSX and he needs to see this one to complete his YN1 finding collection :D

  • @ThePPPTrainAndCarFan Being that this video is 4 years old, I would expect that unit to of been either scrapped or now painted in YN3, but maybe not. I would love to see it still in YN1. :)

  • What THE HELL IS SO DAMN SPECIAL WITH THE HORN?

  • What THE HELL IS SO DAMN SPECIAL WITH THE HORN?

  • What the hell is so special with the horn?

  • awesome video!

  • Nice video but the first 3 minutes and a half were pretty pointless. A nice little edit wouldn't do any harm. =)

  • Nice. I saw this train, different engines come though my neck of the woods (Massachusetts) about a month ago. He was being followed by work trucks and had crew workers riding the seats on the rail cars.

    Nice video.

  • where was this shot at? These locos were just in buffalo laying track at the frontier yard.

  • Cowan,TN

  • very nice is this on the old L&N

  • Nice helper crew!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yup

  • nothing fancy, it's a Nathan k5LA (same as the helpers) but it sounds better on a standard cab because the air isn't forced out all at once like on widecabs. Thanks to CSX for unwittingly preserving hundreds of GP30s with their slug units.

  • The helpers have Nathan K5LAR24s not the K5LA as the slugs.

  • Really nice quality video. That looked and sounded like a really heavy load. Sweet horn. The gates took their sweet time time coming down, wow. (you could probably cut the first 3 mins)

  • cool love the csx GP-30 slug.

  • The engineer in charge of the end units blowing the horn at you was cool.

  • these are slugs,or RD-RD Mates,used as feedsers only,kinda like NPCUs.

  • nice video

  • was the 2nd unit a slug?

  • huh?

  • a slug? A unit with only traction motors mated to a mother unit

  • i donno what you mean by that?

  • never mind...

  • ok...? its not that hard to explain

  • its basically a yard helper, a loco with no cab, or no one in the cab, remote controlled or synced with the first unit

  • look it up on wikipedia, they can explain it a little better than I can.

  • wat kind of horn fo you think he uses? lever? button? or string?

  • i'd say button or lever.

  • k thx

  • Lever activated by the sound of it.

  • Yeah, thats what I think.

  • take lessons!

  • All the comments on this video are made by the same person.... wtf?

  • CSXJoe, you might want to edit your video down some before posting. You know, shorten up the beginning a bit. We can barely see the trains lights until about 2 min into the video. Other than that, nice work.

  • i agree

  • this is bad ass...the GP30 still in primer grey!!!

  • rail train nice.

  • Now how come the helper engines have to help the train going down the hill?

  • sounds like an acordian

  • a true train enthusiest

  • A foamer!!!

  • yes i am!

  • I'm three full minutes into this video and lack the capability of fast forward.....and all I have seen are cars riding over the tracks...Nice horn finally! sweet

  • Gp30 in family line coclors

  • Very interesting noise it's making

  • Noise????

  • Pretty cool how he can actuate a couple of the bells (trumpets) one or two at a time before blowing them all. Easy to do with the traditional horn leaver, but trickier on locomotives that use a button to actuate the horn.

  • cool video

  • Joe, why all the posts?

  • Do you drive trains??

  • stupid people i tell you

  • I can't wait to start my hobby soon; this vid is really motivating! A very expensive hobby, but still...

  • expensive??? how??

  • Maybe the camera

  • Nice vid, in Charleston, WV a few months ago we had a rail train go through. It was still in Chessie System but with CSXT markings.

  • cool. thanks.

  • Horn- Nathan Airchime K5LAR24.

Sheesh, you all need to be schooled--- best horn = Leslie Supertyfon RS-5TRRO, preferably controled by a GrahamWhite #353 lever.

    -Jeffrey

  • naww this one is teh best

  • Ya this one was the best!!

  • serious suggestion - next time be on the right side of the tracks to use the sunlight. I can make out from the shaddows that that was a GP-30 slug - so cool - but make better use of the light while you have it!

  • i know. other side had no where to sit.

  • Holy shoot!! I LOVE IT!! :D ;) ;D

  • thanks

  • K5LA sounds well tuned and cleaned,And one of the AC4400CW's gave a honk!

  • yeah after a week he knew us lol

  • The Gates hadn't lowered Yet

  • they take for ever when they go slow

  • Ive Been Hearing Spouthern Pacific Horns in My Neighborhood!

  • But the trains are CSX

  • ok...?

  • coool.

  • I agree, this is the best CSX train with a K5LA horn I have ever seen!

  • yyup

  • i think the whole thing was the best :D

  • Thats your opinion.

  • huh?

  • The best horn part in my opinion is at 3:50 and I think some people would agree.

  • I thought the last one was the best

  • i liked it all

  • it all was the best

  • Its a Nathan K5LA Airchime with a BEAUTIFUL sound.

  • yup

  • Where is this location??

  • cowan,tn

  • Nice horn what kind is it?? Wow that crossing came down kinda late didnt it?

  • yeah came down late. horn-K5LA

  • It seems like the gates came down late, but the crossing predictor is just doing its job. As long as the signals activate 20-25 seconds before the train is at the crossing, it complies with federal law. The longer the gates are down without a train near, the more likely it is that a motorist or pedestrian will run the gates.

And yeah, the engineer does a nice job of feathering the valve on that K5LA!

    Dave

  • cool video

  • GREAT VIDEO! I really enjoyed it. I didn't expect the helpers at the end of the train though.

  • Is that the K5LA

  • its a K5LA. but it when you press the botton or pull the horn lever the sound will be diffent on how much you pull/push it.

  • Whoa do you drive trains?

  • Hey was there an engineer in the helpers at the rear of the train cause i heard the horn blast when it went by?

  • yup.

  • How come there was a engineer in the locomotive at the rear of the train?

  • becuz he disconnets after he helps the train up the grade. then he comes back down and sit over on the side and waits for another train to help up the grade. thats all he does all day.

  • Really thats what i was thinking to but i just wanted to make sure. why don't they just use the radio control so they don need a guy in the back. or is it just short run.

  • its about a 20 min run for him to go up and back down.

  • Another GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!! That rail train must have been a surprise along with the Helpers!

  • i have thAT VERY SAME TRAIN IN 1 OF MY VIDS

  • Question: why do the wheels make that humming sound that you hear as it picks up speed?

  • they just grinded down the tracks the day befour the video was taken.

  • Joe, really great job on this video.

Dupester is right about the ditch lights. It seems to vary by railroad as to whether they pulse them.

Whether the crossing bells ring continuously or stop when the gates are down is also something that varies. In my experience, at most crossings in the eastern states, the bells stop when the gates are down, while at crossings in the west and south, the bells sound continuously. And at some gate-equipped crossings, there are no bells at all.

    Dave

  • I don't understand all the comments about the lack of ditch lights or headlights. In this video the headlights and ditch lights are clearly turned on, although they are not flashing. Ditch lights are required for trains traversing public highway crossings at speeds of 20 MPH and higher. Flashing ditch lights are not required.

  • It is not that hard to understand where all just so used to Seeing them flash and im sure we all feel the same way about them flashing at crossings

I dont care what FRA says. I think they should always flash at crossing No matter what the speed or crossing or type There are some really Stupid Drivers out there Great Video!!!

  • o cool

  • question about american rail crossings....is it normal for the warning bell on the crossing signals to stop after the gates are down?

  • No most of the bells keep dinging. Im not sure why that one stops.

  • ok thanks for letting me know on that one just seemed strange to me cause here is Canada they keep going till the signal deactivates.......nice vid!!!!!!!!1

  • Where I am in the US (North NJ), most of the bells stop dinging once the gates are down. As I started watching videos on here and heard some of them "keep dinging", I initially thought they were broken. Now that seems like that is the way most of them work? Is that right?

  • awesome horn!

  • The ditch lights ARE on, they're just not on.

  • It looks like an older GP38 or something whcih the ditchlights dont come on automatically when the horn blows Evidentally hes used to driving dash9s which automatically come on when the horn blows and just forgot to turn them on.

  • I think the title should read CSX rail TRAIN. Also, I don't understand the comment about forgetting the ditch lights. FRA rules require ditch lights to be displayed either burning steady OR flashing while approaching and passing public highway grade crossings at speeds 20 MPH or higher.

  • haha just seen that ill change it.

  • Also it could be that he just met a train and he had to dim the headlights and he forgot to put them back up.

  • yes it was a meet.

  • in the west here UP/BNSF don't use the ditchlights hardly at all. i've never seen them use it. only passenger trains use it and they use it ALL the time. nice catch joe

  • coooooool

  • what is "rail fanning"??

  • "Train Watching", Taking Pictures, Video, or just for fun.
