You're probably better at doing a reach-around than me LOL.. I do find it hard to play while looking through the viewfinder of a camcorder...
I'm less of a youtube performer than a youtube informer, I do things no one else has done / never thought of in order to inspire others (to hopefully do it better..)
@anastako yeah.. proof of concept.. 2 year old video.. this is a demo of the power of the iphone OS and the ITM midi APP.. not a GHWT jam session.. Do people even still play this game?
@wacky950 it was really just a random event.. I was using the ITM iphone midi controller program to play my roland drums around the house amusing the kids with volumes that could not be tolerated in the same room.. came in to find the xbox was still on and would tour drums still connected to the midi out on the td12.. but yeah--I could see if a person were to really play this way that would help.. I'd probably setup the buttons different to allow for better 3 finger play (that's what she said)
Does it involve any cords? Cuz I was thinking u could connect the iPhone to the mac (how u usually would with wifi or whatever the program does) the get a 2 USB plug and plug one end in the computer and the other in the back of the wii like a controller?????
@iAppleDude13 not sure on the wii.. I have a wii, ps3 and 360 so MOST of my stuff is on the 360.. (no dongles needed for accessories, better used game availability..)
The GHWT set has a midi port, this is done with that.
I know the wii version of GHWT takes some extra effort to get going, something about double hits for no good reason. Do some googling, you should be able to find instructions on how to connect a drumset to the wii version. This is the xbox 360 version being used.
ALERT: IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO ALREADY... If you have a GHWT drum set you are entitled to a drum calibration kit. This 'kit' is really a nifty little USB to midi IN/OUT cable (normally around $20) works for mac and PC plug and play no drivers. With that cable and the ITM matrix app anybody can do this with a little time.. you have to really like the geek side of things, so troubleshooting will be inevitable..
I used ITM matrix app which allows you to create differnt button types/sizes. This setup was virtually lagless--when i tried again some months later (wanted to play, didn't want to beat on the buggy GHWT set) it was VERY laggy. I think proximity to your wireless router can be a big factor (proximity of the computer.) When this was initially setup I was cracking LOUD beats on the TD12 from every corner of the house--again lagless...
Heck--I've got so many drum, beatmixing, and synth apps on my iphone now I might be faster with my fingers than with a pair of sticks.. (that's what she said) LOL Honestly.. I've been planning a down&dirty mega-review of all 150 music apps I'm using now (which boils down mainly to bebot, beatmaker, randgrid, bassline, guitar and ishred) come back and take a look next week I'll have you cashing in your xbox for a touch that day ;)
You can play 4 or 5 notes at the same time on the iphones multitouch surface. This is why the andoid/google phone will never be able to do what the iphone can in terms of music software. Thanks for commenting.
Yup-- pretty much. The point was that this was really just inadvertant 'bonus' from using my iphone to play my Roland TD12 from the other room using ITM matrix App ($6 iphone app) I can lay down beats and earthshaking bass from a differnt floor of the house-- or find out if how loud my set is from the end of my driveway.. Great for scaring the crap out of anybody who might be nosing around in my music room.
ive just bought a usb- to midi in and out cable and i was wondering is there anyway to record drums on any recording software using the guitar hero world tour drums? I would be very appreciative of any feedback.
Unfortunately, they only included the midi IN port on these GHWT controllers.. no midi output.. I wish they had, would be a nice little midi drum kit that's no worries the kids could beat on and play through their casio keyboards general midi sound set..
I had a very complicated way of doing this in GarageBand.
Basically, you plug in the little USB wireless reciever of the world Tour kit, use an OS X app called GamePad Companion to mount each pad to a letter, and then use the GarageBand software keyboard.
Funny... the very first thing I did with rockband 1.0 when I got it home in dec 07.. was plug that 'really cool digi drumset' into garageband to see what happened and used the exact same config...The lag was bad--totally fine if you turned off the volume and just played to the clack while recording.. and...here I am 1 year later with a roland TD12.. Hows the lag with your setup, I'm guessing PS3 kit? (first thing I said to myself.. I didn't get no dang usb thingy.. I wanna a usb thingy...)
I'm attempting to set this up at home. I've got my iPod using ITM matrix, connected to my computer (works in GarageBand - makes drum sounds as predicted). My MIDI-USB cable is showing MIDI out from my computer, but it's not registering in the game. Yes, the cable is plugged in right. Any hints?
Garageband isnt' a great midi app--some function but not as much as we'd like. I'm guessing it's the midi channel, or that it's not passing through. If I had to bet, it'd be midi channel though. There's a an osx app that can patch your output to all channels as a troubleshooter, midipatchbay select 'remap alldata' to channel 10
If you have lag, it's possible your wifi router is located near other 2.4ghz equipment. It's hard to notice a ping time from a website being .05ms off.. but it's not hard for a drummer to notice immediately.. I also notice the GHWT controller get's flaky buffer overflow-like issues past about 7 feet from my xbox..
hi thanks for your advise on connecting td6 to ghwt went and got a midi cable but having trouble when hitting the pad on the td6 its doing two hits instead of one thx
Sorry so long to reply--- you'll need an iphone or ipod touch, an application called ITM matrix (or their free app, you might have to load and close the app until he matrix grid comes up) and a USB midi port cable (you can use the free USB midi device 'tuning kit' from red octane) It will take some learning to get it going--but time well spent if you like electronic music creation.
I do beleive midi is supported on the ps3 version. Get yourself the free calibration kit, it includes a USB midi in/out device of fair quality--wouldn't use it for recording.. but works great for stuff like this (and of course calibrating your pads..) The one they sent me worked with no drivers in OSX10.5.2 didn't try on PC yet--other than the calibration tool (intel atom processor, winxp home)
Just go to rat shack or music store, buy a midi cable, plug into the GHWT set and you are 98% of the way there. You can play just like that, but, refer to your td6 user manual so you can assign pads in the order you would like, duplicate colors, etc.
Videos to be posted this weekend, maybe. Me converting the kids super-mini-jr acoustic set to work with rockband/guitar hero. Comparison/review of all 3 roland practice pads. Adding a second, cheap, drum brain for extra trigger inputs on TD12. Using the GHWT free drum tuning kit (usb midi port) ON A MAC (to drive my oberheim b3 organ simulator,) AND using a roland practice pad as a snare connected to the GHWT drums, AND using GHWT kick and cymbals on roland practice pad inputs, just for fun.
I'm hoping to build a soundproofed room in the basement so I can get an acoustic kit. I've been playing (drums)for less than a year, and limited time at that with 4 kids. I honestly spend most of my time on a roland RMP5 practice pad. Money is not so much an issue here as time.. believe me though no one wants to hear para-diddle-diddles for an hour on an acoustic set at 2am..
for the difference in value, you should really consider just replacing your td8 brain with a td12.. td12 brains have been going for around $11-1300 on ebay. As long as you have a good mesh snare, you would be well on your way to a very versitile set with amazing sounds.
Sorry been locked down with the kids. Your TD-8 would work perfectly well with the GHWT kit. You could even seperate the brain fairly easy from the GHWT drum kit--so you don't have a big, broken plastic drum set next to your roland.. Try it though, just go to rat shack, get a midi cable (10 bucks) plug in and you'll be playing in style.
Do you have a website or something with more info on your kit setups? I'm very interested as my PS3 kit shat out on the red drum as well as having the triggering issues. I have a full TD10 set in the basement I'd like to get some info setting up for GHWT. Thanks for your help!
thanks alot i appreciate it. also how did you do dual zone crash cymbals. it seems to only respond to the bow of the cymbal. the edge is a deadspot because it wont trigger the midi note.
Just assign the same note to both edge and bow, that way no matter where you hit, it goes to green. This is nice and adds complexity--moreso on the ride where the TD12 has 3 zones.. Sure all 3 zones are blue on the rockband chart, but, your ears and knowing the song allows you to go from bell to edge when needed.. I play with the game drum sounds and sound FX turned off in audio options so that only the backing music plays, and my roland cranked up.
i have a roland td3. i wanted to map some extra drum pads to do an extra sound, like ride on ride cymbal and crash on crash cymbal. basically what is a program that i can use to map the drum kit for better note placements? thanks so much
I'm fairly sure this is an easy task on td3, my buddy started with a td3 back when rockband came out and I'm sure he had everything remapped. I'll ask him to comment on this directly tonight. It's really just a matter of taking the midi note and copying to your desired pads.
I didn't even think the hd1 had midi--but now I remember that the midi was just very limited. The GHWT controller uses standard general midi percussion instrument notes, so you can do it for sure. Since the HD1 has limited midi function though, you might want to rearrange your inputs to suit your liking, and use a 1/4 Y splitter to pair your crash cymbal with green and your ride cymbal with blue in rockband. I don't think open/close HH will be an option for you.
Which kit do you have? I (finally) posted the notes and what they represent in the vid description above. Just download your manual and go from there. You can start playing immediately just by plugging in, and tweek to dulicate colors to multiple pads. Example, in rockband you want blue to be your open HiHat, tom2, and ride, so they must all be set to the same midi note.
OK random addition to this, my daughter was having issues with the GHWT kit, hard to hit red pad. Read about the USB calibration utility--BONUS they are GIVING AWAY FREE usb to midi cables so you can use the utility! Google search it for more info. This is exactly the link needed to run this 'hack of sorts' yourselves. Ooo.. also read about PS3 rockband compatibility issue... sucks for you guys.
Go to app store download free trial called itm midilab. The server / faux midi port side requires mac OSX though.. I think there are other apps in the store that can work as midi control. Google search midi controller iphone. The only real hardware required is USB midi cable like edirol/roland UM1. I can't attest to the latency or playability of other apps though. This one worked instantly and easily for me after poking out the midi notes.
UGH.. man I shouldn't have posted this--sloppy isn't the word for that playing. FYI I don't have a camera imbedded in my chest, it's mounted on a tripod I was doing the camera reach-around style and actually watching through the camera's LCD. A friend was going to help me film last night--but we spent the time geeking out a pro-quality audio-technica wireless mic for rockband/GHWT.
Someone asked, yes, since the mac / iphone are being ported thru the TD12 and then into the GHWT controller... you can play both simultaniously. Someone could do double bass on the iphone while a person plays on the roland. This is actually quite fun OUTSIDE of the game when just jamming, someone can work cowbell, tamberine, etc etc while I'm knocking out beats on the drum set.
