The Nylon rubbing against him creates a negative charge on his body rather than a neutral one.he touches the metal wire the electrons all leave his body and jump to the wire giving him a shock,as the metal also gets a shock and becomes negatively charged the wire leads to the flammable petrol causing the spark to ignite the petrol. the reason this happens at petrol stations is because people get their phones out of their car, rubbing them selves against the upholstery in the car charging them.

Interesting. I have a nylon coat I no longer wear partially for that reason, and also because the static would arc through my walkman, not only wiping all my presets off the tuner, but would shock me through the headphones. I suppose the fact that they were Koss Pro 1's with the titanium driver helped aid the conductivity. Instant shock therapy, lol.

Yes, the mobile phone stuff was tested in Mythbusters too, with same results even using damaged phones. They alerted us about the static electricity as well
