I have a theory that this song is about the band tokin' up. "I Get By" is a play on words for "I Get High." The comparison is made more obvious in The Beatles song "With a Little Help from My Friends" when Ringo says both "I get by" and "I get high with a little help from my friends" in the chorus. The dramatic change in tempo at the middle of the song represents when they've actually smoked since time seems slower for them.

As a vocalist, its pretty much my nightmare.

My brothers (who were drummer and guitarist) used to laugh as I tried my best to replicate these lyrics and hold enough breath to say everything.
