One of my very favorite songs Barbra recorded, but it is always hard to say there are so many. she is an american treasure, for sure, known worldwide as one of the best singers in the world!
This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever. Always been a favorite of mine. I was playing this song one day, and a young, twenty-something, friend of mine, who had come over and heard it, commented "Wow, what a great new song!" I just laughed out loud. He had no idea that this song was not new, but written back in the 1940s. Long before he was even born!
She was sent by God to show us, it isn't what you look like, it's what you do, what you have to offer the world that matters. Beauty is skin deep and we love those that are, but the rest of us have something to offer too.
@Twilightfey HA HA! Once at an Aerobics class while we were bouncing to ENOUGH IS ENOUGH The cheerful bouncy blond instructor said "I think people who don't like barbra Striesand are retarded & I dont mean like drooling on yourself retarded but actually mentally..like...theres just something WRONG with them!"
i love her voice sooo much!! but then duck sauce appears with this song that ruined her completely! anyway, i have never heard this sing but i loved it the moment i heard it, so awesome!
Tradesmen and domestics who work in and around Streisand's house in Malibu are under strict orders...do not look at the great Streisand even if she if right in your path...on penalty of dismissal. Caligua: "Don't you see them, Claudius? The gods, they're all around us. Claudius: "No, sire, I don't. But then only you gods are allowed to see each other."

@ZeekWolfe1 Aside from your passing on obviously false information, I must wonder why you do so. Barbra Streisand is a humanitarian and a sweetheart of a person. You, on the other hand, are obviously despicable and someone I look down at. Hate on, Zeek.
@alpha3327 Hmm..."obviously false information" you say. It is clear you don't live in Malibu, Santa Monica or even Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley where a lot of tradesmen and domestics live. The guys who sweep the swimming pool must at all times keep their eyes averted (on pain of dismissal)when the great Streisand is resting on her lounge in the sun...no doubt while reading the works of Thomas Jefferson or the Federalist Papers. What a joke!
Both sing it very well...two different vocal ranges here between Streisand and Jones. . Shirley Jones did an excellent job in her performance in the musical Carousel which brought this to the attention of the public.
I love this song because it brings sad memories about my unforgettable love affair with a St/ Paul nun from Pinas who turn around and become a butterfly lover when she turn unfaithful to me when she meet a lover priest who played piano with her in the church choir in Ermita Church. This was our love theme song. We were both in love in our first two years of secret hidden love affair. I am still in love with her and I was really broken hearted.
If I Loved You - a song that has been done by a number of people - who can blame them for this is such a hauntingly beautiful love song. There is nothing worse than unrequited love. Thank you for a lovely post.
Shirley Jones sets a very high bar with her perfectly done rendition, and even though I disapprove of Barbra "riding" a few notes, her fantastic voice comes through once again here. My gosh, to think that all the rock and rollers don't understand or can't appreciate beauty like this!
The definitive rendition is Shirley Jones as truly a 19 year old singing this immortal song in the 1956 film version of Carousel. "Babs" sings this in a concert style and is not believable as a teenager in love...you really have to look at other interpretations.
@jeffbazell1 I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. The last European tour (just 7 shows in 2006) wore her out. Also, her voice didn't hold up. I'm afraid ol' Babs missed the boat on the serious touring thing; a shame she didn't (tour) in her prime.
she is amazing. i hope to some day see her live but not sure if she performs anymore...also check out renee fleming's version thanks so much for posting!!!!
@romanticspirit Do you know that the original couple for her version of "Star is Born" was Streisand and Elvis....he apparently backed out because he wanted top billing.
I actually prefer her alternate take of this, which is shown in the video "The Making of the Broadway Album." It's more emotional. Visually, Streisand indicates the take is too slow (to the musicians) and to speed it up somewhat, but, ironically, it's that take that I find more moving.
I just listened to Renee Fleming singing this... there is no comparison but then again twoo different types of voices I just LOVE Renee!!! Unbelievable!!!
i wish all these great artist of our times comes to vegas and perform for 2 weeks...barbra.lara fabian.charlotte.s.brightman.c.simon. c.wright.r. fleming...so many of them exquisite voices....superior of power!!!
She is the best singer ever...no one compares :)

A nice version but Charlotte Church's is closer to the emotion of the original-of course,Shirley Jones is #1.

The only one that beats here out on this song is Shirley Jones who sang it in the movie Carousel. :) Other than that, Streisand does a good job.
