Biographer Charles Higham records that the sisters have always had an uneasy relationship, starting in early childhood, when Olivia would rip up the clothes that Joan had to wear as hand-me-downs, forcing Joan to sew them back together. A lot of the feud and resentment between the sisters stems from Joan's perception of Olivia being their mother's favorite child.
Thanks, Baz, for this wonderful tribute to Joan Fontaine - a classic beauty & actress - as was her sister, Olivia DeHavilland. Joan took her mother's maiden name, Fontaine - while Olivia took her father's surname of DeHavilland.
It is my understanding that these sisters had a falling out of sorts & were not on speaking terms . Am I correct?
Ahh - and Fontaine's role as "Rebecca" in Selznick's 1940 film of the same name with Sir Laurence Olivier as her new hubby vs the dastardly housekeeper, Mrs Danvers (Judith Anderson)?
Truly an iconic actress in equally iconic films for all time!

I love her performances in the Hitchcock films she did. It's a shame that her and Olivia never made up.

Who can ever forget Joan Fontaine's portrayal of Jane Eyre? She held her own so well against the eminent Orson Welles as Rochester.

Joan Fontaine had a victorian Beauty" a lady like quality that was actually timeless.
She made a perfect Juliet figure` with
classic Elegance.
A Lengend like Garbo and Dietrich.
