Ham radio is a hobby. The study of everything radio. At one time the 11 meter band was a ham band. The FCC made a huge mistake and thought it would be a good ideal to use an HF band for public 2 way short distance comms. Was never intended to be a hobby and those who make it a hobby are really missing out on a lot of propagation.
I love cb myself and when 10/11/12 meter skip is dead we just go down to 40 meters for the skip and so on.

i have done both cb and ham. i used cb a lot when i was new to ham radio because hams dont hop on 10 meters when it opens up. but i will tell you you are not leaving the continental US anytime soon on good ole 11 meters with the sunspots as low as they are. also in my second year of having hf privilages, i have only ran into two assholes on 40 meters.

Agreed, I may buy a nice CB in addition to my Yaesu FT-897 because if I had to guess more people have CBs than ham radios and if there were a major civil disaster it may wise to have a CB. Not only that CB is fun for just BSn' around where ham radio is bit more formal, but then again FCC regs grant ham operators more room to experiment legally. I feel a greater sense of accomplishment from Ham radio than CB, but CB is just fun to play around with.
Most, but not all, older hams have this sense of "im better than you because i had to do that and this before i became a ham". These clowns are the ones that make ham radio unfriendly to the new guys. Also most ham ops are pretty stuffed shirty and ana retentive. Thats why i have my CB. So if i feel like cutting loose and having fun i can!! And NOT be browbeat over acting like a goof.

It wont get any better. I feel there is a lot of resentment by the older ops towards the new no coders. i have evern heard of some ops that are rallying the ARRL and the FCC to stop issuing new lisenses and even a proposal to bring back the CW test and make the written tests hard.
You can not be for real! I am an electrical engineer with a recent combat military background..and I will remind you that CBs are great and inexpensive. A lot better than the little hand held jobs. The problems w/ CBs is all of the radio traffic on them though. They are outstanding for local like 30 miles and more w/ a repeater. Ham radios on the other hand are world wide! I have heard transmissions from Russia my friend here in Chicago.

I just got a neat old SBE Console V from a local ham. The rig looks like new! What a cool old CB base. I wich i can find more info on the net about this old rig.
CBs are not legal to operate over 4 watts, which means all the CBs in most neighbor hoods are junk! If CBs are soo cool, then why has it been discussed to crack down on CBs due to them interferring with emergency radio equipment. IE ambulances, hospitals, ETC. Its the CBers that are causing all the RFI to home entertainment equipment. I had a CB op near me that was tearing up my TV, stereo, and goung through my computer speakers. One day i told him about it and he told me off simply because I was a ham. Well, i made a few recordings, sent them to the FCC office and a few weeks later NO MORE CB! He was gone!! Yayy!! Now i have peace and quiet!!

They are trying to get CB popular here in NL again and so far it is working. I have a CB in my car and every odd time i tune up to 27.075 to hear some locals playing " Foxhunt" which is a good way. i see lots of people with CB gear in this cars now so its not to bad but there is alot more to go. I have repaired upwards of 40 antennas and maybe 4 radios so far so without a doubt i am helping to bring it back into play. IF you dont use it you lose it. Simple.

Ham radio is a hobby. The study of everything radio. At one time the 11 meter band was a ham band. The FCC made a huge mistake and thought it would be a good ideal to use an HF band for public 2 way short distance comms. Was never intended to be a hobby and those who make it a hobby are really missing out on a lot of propagation.
I love cb myself and when 10/11/12 meter skip is dead we just go down to 40 meters for the skip and so on.

I iz both a CBer and a HAM. Just got me a Regency Imperial II on ebay. Also just got a Drake TR3, I did CB back in the 60s with my first rig being a Lafayette HB20, we had to have a CB license back then. We have some legit CB OT aorund here out in the country. Citified CBers are NVTS!
But there's somrethin to havin a Cobra (with clarifier) with a D104 power mic (with echo) set up in yer pickumup Ford truck with dat linniker (in the beer cooler) and coat hanger antenner using speaker wire!

i have done both cb and ham. i used cb a lot when i was new to ham radio because hams dont hop on 10 meters when it opens up. but i will tell you you are not leaving the continental US anytime soon on good ole 11 meters with the sunspots as low as they are. also in my second year of having hf privilages, i have only ran into two assholes on 40 meters.

Agreed, I may buy a nice CB in addition to my Yaesu FT-897 because if I had to guess more people have CBs than ham radios and if there were a major civil disaster it may wise to have a CB. Not only that CB is fun for just BSn' around where ham radio is bit more formal, but then again FCC regs grant ham operators more room to experiment legally. I feel a greater sense of accomplishment from Ham radio than CB, but CB is just fun to play around with.

Most, but not all, older hams have this sense of "im better than you because i had to do that and this before i became a ham". These clowns are the ones that make ham radio unfriendly to the new guys. Also most ham ops are pretty stuffed shirty and ana retentive. Thats why i have my CB. It wont get any better. I feel there is a lot of resentment by the older ops towards the new no coders. i have evern heard of some ops that are rallying the ARRL and the FCC to stop issuing new lisenses and even a proposal to bring back the CW test and make the written tests hard.

You can not be for real! I am an electrical engineer with a recent combat military background..and I will remind you that CBs are great and inexpensive. A lot better than the little hand held jobs. The problems w/ CBs is all of the radio traffic on them though. They are outstanding for local like 30 miles and more w/ a repeater. Ham radios on the other hand are world wide! I have heard transmissions from Russia my friend here in Chicago.

Im using a Dipole antenna conected to ladder line to an old two system radio (one for recieve and one for TX. I just set up a CB radio, talked to some morons in HALF the time it took me to set up my amateur equipment.

CBs are not legal to operate over 4 watts, which means all the CBs in most neighbor hoods are junk! If CBs are soo cool, then why has it been discussed to crack down on CBs due to them interferring with emergency radio equipment. IE ambulances, hospitals, ETC. Its the CBers that are causing all the RFI to home entertainment equipment. I had a CB op near me that was tearing up my TV, stereo, and goung through my computer speakers. One day i told him about it and he told me off simply because I was a ham. Well, i made a few recordings, sent them to the FCC office and a few weeks later NO MORE CB! He was gone!! Yayy!! Now i have peace and quiet!!

They are trying to get CB popular here in NL again and so far it is working. I have a CB in my car and every odd time i tune up to 27.075 to hear some locals playing " Foxhunt" which is a good way. i see lots of people with CB gear in this cars now so its not to bad but there is alot more to go. I have repaired upwards of 40 antennas and maybe 4 radios so far so without a doubt i am helping to bring it back into play. IF you dont use it you lose it. Simple.
