To quote the song 40.1 by Sabaton: 'Always remember, the fallen soldier, always remember, fathers and sons at war. Always Remember, the fallen soldier, always remember, buried in history.'
War destroys us physically and spiritually. It benefits only the engineers of war, the capitalists. The Vietnam War was based on a pack of lies stacked higher than the Tower of Babel.
@latka101Tell me, how does the sexual orientation of individuals in America determine the state of the economy? Do gay people really control wall street? I'm just dying to know! Please, share your valuable insight.
Onfact Irak os correct asd IraQ! Thry use differenbt alphabets and the coicer of the transator is not always the same!!! I thought the mistakes I pointed out were enough but if you want more, there you are!!! :)))))))
@ 2joo4u: you said you don't wanna get into a political debate but you did. I'll just mention your first and biggest mistake so I won't have to lose more of my precious time: although I'm an officer (retired) in what is considered a crack regiment and have seen combat, I didn't occupy Wall St. simply because, thank gawd, I'm not american! :)
@ dexter: as you saw fit to answer me privately, so did I! For all the americans, Billy Joel is americn so he speaks about marines but he's also a smart man and I think the song is directed to every soldier, of every country, who stood under enemy fire and had nothin' but his mates to hang on!!
Those men who met on Parris Island (not Paris) are just an example for every soldier who ever suffered for the interest of politicians who don't give a damn about the risk of the spread of communism (there's none) but who, like in the cse of Irak are goin' to make money rebuilding a country! Where were the famous Weapons of Mass Destruction? Or the ties to Al Quaida? Of course they didn't exist!! Politician are scumbags and all of them are not worth the life of a single boy, american or not!
@TheCuddlyWombat lemme guess. you went on occupy wall street. am i right? um 2 things. iraq is spelled with a q not a k. (that was one.) and politicians arent scumbags. politicians founded this country. actually it was a bunch of pissed off drunk guys but thats off topic! and "irak" as you put it, needs to be rebuilt. as a country, it needs our help. id rather not get into a political debate on youtube so..... yeah. bye.
@2joo4u No offense, but Iraq has been a shithole for decades. The only reason the US cares now is because we cant rely on our own crude oil resources. So dont paint the war in Iraq as some kind of "fight for freedom." It's not anymore. Saddam has been dead for a while now. I mean NO disrespect to the military personnel that risk their lives every day for our country, being the son of a now retired Lieutenant Colonel, but there really shouldnt be conflict in Iraq at all anymore.
I don't think this video or this song is about billy Joel very much. Its about those men, "Charlie", and "Baker". Its about all of those men, that "Met on Paris Island", and who would "all go down together."
Im dutch, and my teacher told us about this song and explained the full vietnam war and the cold war. I fully understand it now, respect from the Netherlands!
"Who was wrong and who was right? ...." Once the shooting starts, you're fighting for your brothers, no cause matters. IMO true of every soldier in every war.

@Lapsinero driver3035 i'm guessing isn't proud of any political shit when it comes to vietnam and i'm not even american so i dont give 2 shits about that either, what he is saying is that he is proud to have served his country and to have a rare bond with other men that is only formed when in combat , so shut the fuck up and have your little sarcastic political comment with the person who was president instead of saying them to someone who has seen so much shit he doesn't need to read more shit!
Breaks my heart. There are few, if any, who have my respect over veterans. I wish the fighting would end so that the peace they fought for 30 years ago was an end to it all. One step over the wrong territory line, or a disagreement between a few men over a couple million dollars that dont even exist and my children or theirs will lose friends, brothers or their own lives and suffer unspeakable pain for what? Why arent the stories and the pictures enough for us to see it isnt worth it? nothing is
driver3035-SORRY MAN! I misread a comment. YOU are a true Patriot. It's asrapk that should be tossed out of America along with the other losers. Again...driver3035. My mistake. I apologize, man. Very sorry.
driver3035, Gagoik and the likes are nothing but traitors. You're all pretty sick individuals badmouthing our troops. If you don't believe in Patriotism (I did 30 years) you should just shut up. Your dumb comments show how ignorant you really are. God Bless all our troops and a special thanks to all Nam vets. You are not forgotten.
@BB61Sailor You're right, it is wrong to badmouth our troops. Most soldiers have fought honorably to defend others and our country, but patriotism isn't as black and white as you think. Our government has hoodwinked the public with propaganda over the years and some of the wars we fought weren't justified. What the government wants isn't always what's right for the people. Being a patriot doesn't always mean going along with everything the government wants.
@emidore I agree 100 percent. BUT as a soldier my place is not to question my elected leaders. They make the policy...I carry it out. Fortunately, living in a democracy allows me too disagree with the elected governments foreign policy. I am not an American...but I get it.
@emidore i agree we were hoodwinked into vietnam but at the same time, how can anyone call themselves patriotic when they wave the flag of the enemy and call our troops baby killers and spit on them? if you speak to any vietnam veteran they will tell u how a 5 year old pulled out a shotgun to their crotch.....they had no choice to kill the child...its instant reaction
Brother, I served my country for 22 years in the Army and say AMEN to your statement! To me PATRIOTISM is being courageous enough to question the government as well as fight to protect it. That is our duty as Americans!
Why do we keep sending our sons and daughters off to wars that we don't belong in. Don't we have enough problems right here in the U.S.? For GOD sakes quit taking our children. My son is 14 and I hope the wars are over before he turns 18. Please GOD are you listening?
The vietnam war was to stop the spread of communism to southern vietnam, to give those in southern vietnam freedom and to try and stop the communists, now no one was brain washed they decided the war had a purpose and saw there country needed there help in this war, at least thats why my grandfather joined the army, now thanks to all the service men out there your country thanks you, and to you people who have no respect for servicemen shame on you but think about this they still fight for you.
You don't need to have served to feel this. I cry everytime I hear this just thinking it could have been me and my friends - doesn't matter what you are fighting for or why, its the human bond and bravery in spite of sheer inner terror that this song captures like no other ever has. Anyone arguing the toss over politics has no soul. I've never served & never will, it doesn't matter.
One of the most underrated, yet most powerful, songs about the Viet Nam war and one of Billy Joel's best. It never reached the commercial success of his other songs, but he didn't write it to become a hit. He did it for all veterans of all sides, most who are just players in someone else's game. I can't ever say "thank you" enough to our veterans, past, present, and future.
i cry everytime i hear this song, my dad just died be 2 yrs in sept. cause of agent orange in nam. i dont care what anyone says ww2 no disrespect vietnam was the worst war of any war fuck the desert war you can't see charlie whole different ballgame back then
My Dads Grandpa was a Colonel in WW2 on the American forces. My Moms Grandpa was a nazi in WW2...Somehow...In this mix of this... I was born... Now Looking over at the Vet war and this song... I find it beautiful... ( and im looking to join the army asap) Millitary runs in my family apparantly.. :P
agreed ,the bond between brothers in arms is a bond 1 will never understand unless they have served in combat.served as a battlefield medic in desert storm
@stcarlover It was a little too real for radio back when it came out. MTV was the only reason the general public ever heard of it. MTV actually used to play music back then....
I lived in Germany in the early 90s. I remember Billy Joel coming over to do a free concert for military personnel and their families. I had a hard time talking my parents into going, because they heard "free concert" and expected "he'll show up drunk and sing for half an hour". They were wrong - he was on stage for about 3 hours. This song, at a military concert, was one of the big highlights. You could feel the respect and the truth in the air when he sang this song.
Im in the Army ROTC going for my commision in the Army. I have friends over seas loosing their life. This song is the only song that has ever been able to make me cry. For all you idiots talking politics about this song need to shut the fuck up. Unless you have served in a combat zone you do not know a damn thing about how close a bond forms between brothers in arms....its a closer bond then family. This song is not about the politiscs its about your fellow brothers in arms. God Bless the Fallen
Thank you, Billy Joel, for writing this beautiful soul-touching song. Every time I hear it, I am overcome with emotion. You make me feel like I was 'there'. You are a brilliant songwriter/musician. And, most of all, thank you to all of the servicemen and women who have ever fought in the name of our great country and to those who fought as our allies. God bless all of you!!!
What I'm wondering is if those guys in the circle during the refrain are actual veterans @Dariuszdavi I hope you realize how wrong that statement sounds.
For me, this song is about the friendship and bonds formed between folks who are selfless enough to put country before their own lives; unfortunately a large part of the times they are part of a corrupt agenda of the ruling classes, as in the case of the vietnam war. This song brings out the heroism of those individual folks, which trumps the corruption of the government which fought this unnecessary war.
@sohampablo There is no such thing as a necessary war. None of it is necessary. The only reason we fight wars is because people forget the last one and the politicians who wage them care nothing for the men who will be fighting them. It dosn't have to be that way, but people are people, and politicians are politicians.
Last Play at Shea...when Billy did this with FDNY and NYPD, PAPD and EMS on stage singing along with vets from Afghanistan and Iraq what an emotional release. It was amazing, thanks Billy...thank you all who serve especially full time reservists who are also NYPD, FDNY, PAPD and EMS! You do us proud! You dun good!!!
I had to listen to Natalia Wonderland right before this masterpiece.... i hate advertisements because theyre current ....This Generation is the biggest failure musically and mentally im ashamed to be a part of it
I think it's very easy to romanticise something when you use sentences like "fighting for freedom", or "dying for freedom", but I find it hard to reconcile what I think of as freedom, with something that is forced on people at gun point. It doesn't work, Vietnam demonstrated that and Iraq is proving that now, with the 'democratic' and 'free' political system implemented in Iraq after the invasion electing to provide less liberty and person freedoms for women than they had under Saddam.
@ClottyClaire Well I would say you are wrong on all accounts. Since Saddams demise, although it's hard for a society to embrace its new found freedom and transform, in the long run history will prove it was the right thing to do. I don't know where you get your info but personal freedom and the freedom of woman are by far now greater than they ever were under Saddam. Your statement is born out of total ignorance. Freedom was not forced on them by gun point, that is just plain stupid.
Just an observation, but wars seem to be the result of people doing/taking things that they have no right to. Every day, some 'leader' somewhere decides that they need to send in the troops. Never once do they think to go in themselves.Anyone who hates members of the armed forces is hating the wrong people. You want to despise someone, despise the worthless lying suits who declare the wars in the first place: the prime ministers, the presidents, the kings, the who-the-hell-ever.
This song is not about politics, it is about the bond formed between combat veterans. I am a Vietnam vet and damn proud of it. If you have not served you have no idea the bonds that are formed. I am in my late 50's and to this day my wife knows that if one of my old team members contacts me and needs help of any kind, I am on a plane within 24 hours to go to their aid. If you haven't served then shut the f**k up since you have no idea what you are talking about.
@driver3035 Couldn't have said it better myself, Driver! Thanks a ton for your service, especially in Vietnam too! I'm just ashamed as an American at how we treated you guys so horribly and yet we welcome back the guys now like heroes...not that they're not, because they are, but you guys deserved that same support and didn't get it and it was wrong.. :-(
@GreatnessItself have you ever heard of this little thing called a draft you tard? its not like you had a choice back then weather to go or not. and unless youve done something similar to his experience, back off
I see my dad at 2:46 and 4:48 to the left to the guy in red our right facing them

HEARTBREAK'S FOR MANKIND!
grimwolf666die 5 months ago

Very sorry.
BB61Sailor 5 months ago
driver3035, Gagoik and the likes are nothing but traitors. You're all pretty sick individuals badmouthing our troops. If you don't believe in Patriotism (I did 30 years) you should just shut up. Your dumb comments show how ignorant you really are. God Bless all our troops and a special thanks to all Nam vets. You are not forgotten.
BB61Sailor 5 months ago
@BB61Sailor You're right, it is wrong to badmouth our troops. Most soldiers have fought honorably to defend others and our country, but patriotism isn't as black and white as you think. Our government has hoodwinked the public with propaganda over the years and some of the wars we fought weren't justified. What the government wants isn't always what's right for the people. Being a patriot doesn't always mean going along with everything the government wants.
emidore 5 months ago 61
@emidore Would you like to name those wars, and dictate why we "shouldn't" have been there? I'd like to see that list, and your reasoning.
God Bless our troops, and their families.
AnAmericanSon 4 months ago
@emidore I agree 100 percent. BUT as a soldier my place is not to question my elected leaders. They make the policy...I carry it out. Fortunately, living in a democracy allows me too disagree with the elected governments foreign policy. I am not an American...but I get it.
sagman68 3 months ago
@emidore i agree we were hoodwinked into vietnam but at the same time, how can anyone call themselves patriotic when they wave the flag of the enemy and call our troops baby killers and spit on them? if you speak to any vietnam veteran they will tell u how a 5 year old pulled out a shotgun to their crotch.....they had no choice to kill the child...its instant reaction

Brother, I served my country for 22 years in the Army and say AMEN to your statement! To me PATRIOTISM is being courageous enough to question the government as well as fight to protect it. That is our duty as Americans!
alohajoe2010 2 months ago 23

TheRacistsMustDie 6 months ago
For me, this song is about the friendship and bonds formed between folks who are selfless enough to put country before their own lives; unfortunately a large part of the times they are part of a corrupt agenda of the ruling classes, as in the case of the vietnam war. This song brings out the heroism of those individual folks, which trumps the corruption of the government which fought this unnecessary war.
sohampablo 6 months ago 2
@sohampablo There is no such thing as a necessary war. None of it is necessary. The only reason we fight wars is because people forget the last one and the politicians who wage them care nothing for the men who will be fighting them. It dosn't have to be that way, but people are people, and politicians are politicians.

ClottyClaire 7 months ago

You want to despise someone, despise the worthless lying suits who declare the wars in the first place: the prime ministers, the presidents, the kings, the who-the-hell-ever.
blorgensteen 7 months ago
This song is not about politics, it is about the bond formed between combat veterans. I am a Vietnam vet and damn proud of it. If you have not served you have no idea the bonds that are formed. I am in my late 50's and to this day my wife knows that if one of my old team members contacts me and needs help of any kind, I am on a plane within 24 hours to go to their aid. If you haven't served then shut the f**k up since you have no idea what you are talking about.
