Ask yourself and your parents and grandparents: Do your car, television, telephone needs to be repaired more often than 50 years ago? No. Do your computer needs do be repaired more often than 20-30 years ago? No.
Highly reliable system, auto-healing, embededded intelligence: if something is getting more and more automated it needs less and less human work to perform properly.
Actually, building a new system, or rebuilding an older generates more jobs. But when it is ready...
Would it be cost effective to produce Hydrogen at Hydroelectric power plants during off peak periods when it is necessary to release water from the dam?
Question 2
Would it be possible for the “Smart Grid” to recognize when excess power is on the grid due to lower demands and if so could Hydrogen be produced with this excess Power? Also, I wonder if this would be cost effective.
Hydrogen fuel cells produce power through an electrochemical (battery-like) process that differs radically from traditional combustion-based approaches. NETL is working on cost-effective ways to derive hydrogen from domestic coal and natural gas, and to utilize fuel cells for power generation. Each step takes our Nation closer to an energy future where hydrogen systems deliver virtually pollution-free energy and reduce our dependence on imported oil.
2:59 "The cost per household for grid modernization, spread over 10 to 20 years, is less than one medium pizza a month." 10 TO 20 years? I'm suspicious of anyone who quotes figures that may be off by as much as 100%.
3:10 "Grid modernization more than pays for itself." If that's true why does every family have to give up a pizza per month for the next decade or two?
They're not being specific for a reason. If they use words like "modern" and "smart" you'll buy it. It's all just double-speak.
What the fuck is a modern grid. This is a typical American video, it tells u all about something that u dont even know about, this is pathetic, and half of americans in this world is buying into this crap. What is a modern grid? is it the grid we have today, how does it work?wtf
The energy savings from a Smart Grid is huge. Implementation of the Smart Grid technology reduces carbon emissions and helps in the development of renewable energy sources such as the wind. Pacific Crest Transformers is working on the 'smart' system. It has whitepapers on whether the transformers are ready for the Smart Grid.
More jobs?

I wonder how much of this modern grid could have been built with that $1.4 trillion in bailout money we spent.

No mention of precautions against potentially catastrophic solar events.
