I was on my way to Vietnam in Feb. 1965 with the Marine Corps. About 40 of us were in a bar in Honolulu called Alley Cat (it was in an alley), but it looked like a log cabin. There were about 40 of us from Master Gunnery Sgt. to PFC. Only 11 of us went home 13 months later, although some left early with missing parts. We musta played 40 Shades by Johnny 100 times that night and taken a 1000 pictures. Every time I want to cry I play it and pull out that nights pictures.
When they recorded this, Johnny wasn't able to be in the studio, so Johnny Western, who played acoustic on their tours did the singing, and the band, the orchestra they had in the studio especially for this record, and the background singers backed Mr. Western up. Later they took out Western and Johnny recorded his part after.
Honestly said, I think this record of the great song expresses how bad Johnny's health was at the time they recorded this. So great he returned at 100% a few years after!!

That's what we need: originals, not the live stuff of doubtful quality!
