It is the subatomic particle (Higgs boson) that is responsible for giving mass. They call it the God particle because, well, if particles had no mass then we would not exist. I have never liked the term "God" particle since it is misleading.

The smallest particle that still holds mass...Any smaller than that and youve just got basically nothing...idk i cant explain it well enough. Do some research and find out for yourself.. :]

Actually higgs boson is a very heavy particle. It's exact mass isn't known but it's very likely at least 150GeV, possibly quite a bit more. That's the mass of about 160 protons (hydrogen atoms), and the mass of at least around 100 billion electron neutrinos.

That's also the reason they need such a huge particle accelerator to find it, as you need to accelerate the particles to extreme speeds for them to have hundreds of gigaelectronvolts of energy.
