  • I remember the Bronx as a kid,...my mother was raised there and we used to visit often. I had no idea all this was happening. I did buy my first Troops in New York and brought them back to LA. Started scratching on my mom's 45's.....She hated when I did that....Im 40 now and I still DJ from time to time. I still have my 1200's and like 6 old school mixers. Thanx Kool Herc for your creativity.

  • What year was this video made?

  • @70mexrican This is an English BBC TV documentary made by Alan Yentob in 1984.

  • This guy should have Jay-Z's money and fame!!! fuck that!! he's the founding father of one of the most beloved and embraced genre/culture ever...HIP-HOP!

  • Was he the guy who started hip hop?

  • @3670Chris yes!!!!!

  • @3670Chris yes!!!!!

  • @3670Chris Kinda, he is kinda like the father of Hip-hop, but it was created from regge and american-african music, U know banjo music and such :D

  • It sucks that Herc never gets any credit for anything not even the Hip-Hop artists will help him in his time of need don't they know he basically employed all of them

  • @RapLegendsRelapse THATS BLACK PEOPLE A BUNCH OF UNGRATEFUL INGRATES ! JUST LIKE THIS BITCH TRY ARGUING WITH ME THAT THE DUDE CAME FROM JAMAICA WITH THIS SHIT UNTIL I PULLED UP WIKIPEDIA AND SHOWED HER YOU TUBE , HISTORY SHE NEVER KNEW SHIT ABOUT EXCEPT TO RUN HER YOUNG ASS DUMB MOUTH. BOOM BOXES WAS A COMMON THING OUTSIDE OF SHOPS IN THE GHETTOS OF JAMAICA AND STILL TO THIS DAY ITS STILL GOING ON

  • @Maxantium last time i checked jamaicans were black as hell

  • @Constellashun I didn't say they weren't. The goal was to show we are all Africans deposited all over the America's and Caribbean to show the influence based on Africa than land territories which 500 + years ago we didn't have a choice it where we now call home. ONENESS ! 1 example also "NOTORIOUS BIG" his parents are from JAMAICA.The list goes on.

    for creating ART!!!!

  • Millionaire rappers today like Jay Z, Snoop, Dre and more should donate a few million to him to help his illness as they wouldn't be millionaires today if it wasn't for Kool Herc. They owe him and they should definitely help the reason why they didn't end up dead on the streets years ago.

  • @100pjp001

i agree, but they probably don't know who he is. :(

  • @earinsound

Especially Jay Z anyway he's just a phony rapper swagger jacking most rappers lyrics especially Big's he's a joke. Even named himself after Jaz o who he disrespects even tho he wouldn't be where he is if it wasn't for him. Like Nas said "from Sean Carter to Jay Z damn you on Jaz's dick"

  • so many peeps owe this foo thats its UNREAL! its like this: if you see herc walkin down the street you need to IMMEDIATELY give him everything in your pocket and sign over the checkbook..this dude almost single handedly brought what we call... "rappin" and turntableism from the jamrock(jamacia).over there they was callin it toastin but they was rappin long before sugar hill.then this guy had the nerve to just play the "breakbeat" over and over for like 5-10 mins.thats when the b-boy was born!

  • I donated to his cause. If you really represent hip hop, you will donated too. it don't have to be a lot.

  • Can anyone tell me what's the name of the song at the beginning?

  • @DetmoldTV Space Cowboy

  • @culturehop by who?

  • @DetmoldTV

Space Cowboy - Jonsun Crew - WOHAAAAAH!!!!

  • lol.. i live so close to where it all started

  • To me Hip Hop is a state of mind - your interpretation of what you see hear and experience from the world around you from your own perspective.

Beats / breaks / linguistics, colour, race or anything else to me doesnt really influence what hip hop is or should be.

    Peace n love

  • @REXER1977 stay off the subject if you don't know what hip hop means it's not a state of mind ,nor is it an interpretation it's breakdacing djing graffiti it's a art hip hop brought culture of races together hip hop is a not a state of mind if you wanted to make a hip hop song you state of mind wouldn't get you signed your art will you had to be good. do some more research on hip hop

  • Narrating is legendary radio personality (Imhotep) Gary Byrd (WWRL and WBLS).

  • PEACE AND LOVE Y'ALL. that's what its all about :o) Colour used to matter a lot. Then hip hop came and colour matters a lot less as a result. Kool Herc put TWO TURNTABLES TOGETHER!?!?! and taught everyone our differences make us look more beautiful when we dance alongside everyone else!!! That is a MASSIVE legacy. Big tings... :o) KH ur LARGE every time!!

  • People we need to listen to each other :0) That's the point of Hip-Hop. Black folk back then were being told they were not equal, that they should be ashamed of their colour, their music their style. They evolved Hip-Hop and used it as a means of expression to say WE ARE ALL EQUAL. They overcame hatred, educated people and gave a victimised poor people pride in the VERY thing they were victimised for... their colour, their music their style. That's not racist. That's a phenomenal achievement.

  • roslergoater you cocksucker! You don`t know to appreciate anything you piece of shit! DJ Cool Hertz was credited with originating hip hop music!!!! 1st reapper!

  • I love that you blessed us with your talent I enjoyed many nights at the Avelo on 174th in the Bronx those were the days, before it was infiltrated unfortunately like everything else that starts on a positive note that is why we have to remember our original pure intentions. If they want to be real all they have to do is go back to our roots. Namaste

  • reggae go green...save vinyl's records and cd's Digital age.... Bridge to Jamaica fedruary 14th--30th 2010 ......save job's...... save the Environment...... ps, one love to the world of social change.............

  • @TheBerlin09 Jonzun Crew - Space Cowboy

  • thanks:D

  • Alot of haters!.Dont forget to let everybody know how you really feel!!

  • There was violence b4 HipHop, you jerk. Stay your ass in your subburb, hater.

  • i didnt say there wasnt.

  • your so stupid. hip hop was never a contributer to violence. hip hop is about peace and having fun, djing, mcing, graffiti writing and bboying. it shows true expression, not violence. it had never shown violence. your just so fkin stereotypical man.

  • @iPwnnXD now a days and even back then graffiti is a very violent thing. its all about beating up and harrasing and stealing from other "artists" i used to paint when they called them selfs artists. but there all just thugs.

  • @dbspaceoditty lol so banksy is a thug ?

  • @gigantomaquia banksy is an artist. he is not from the states. if you look up banksy interviews you will see how he has mentioned how violent it can be. in other places it actually has some art behind it. but its about getting up and getting known. it has not and i might say never has been about the art in the USA...granted there are some that are about the art. but most are about getting there name out there. banksy doesnt tag most of his art. but so many are just about getting up.

  • WAtS THE NAME OF THE SONG IN THE BEGGiNiNG ?

  • Jonzun Crew - Space Cowboy

  • GOD BLESS Dj kOOL HERC !!

  • im w/ roslergoater. Breezwonder u racist hip-hop is 4 any1 who enjoys the music jsu lik every other genre

  • i wonder what song it is at the beginning

  • you all make me fuckin laugh, hip hop is a genre for everyone, who givs a fuck if someone black set the ball rolling? i came from a white working class background and fuckin loved hip hop from the age of 13. it excited me and got me into graf, beatbox, style, ruining vinyl!! etc. look at the bigger picture you racists! the beastie boys are 3 legends from NYC who could out rap the best of them. and do people who really love hip hop care?? i rest my case, Wayne aka Marvel, Manchester England

  • You are what we call a WANNABE.

    Straight from NYC.

  • with a name like Hardbody, YOU are the wannabe! Remember the KRS One drop, How Many MC's, you wouldn't last 10 minutes in Moss Side mutherfucker!! I've been to NYC years ago, bunch of pussies!

  • Moss side? You're the perfect definition of wannabe. Why are you trying so hard to be apart of something that you know you're not.

Big Pun: " We'll battle the world with just the 5 boroughs".

  • You're talking about a country where their officers arent allowed to carry guns?

Theres more guns in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx then the entire country of England.

  • Everyone in the world is Aware and knows about NYC and no one in the fucking world knows what the fuck moss side is...

  • in my country you get a proper fistfight and a smackdown, that's the problem with the USA, a gun makes you hard, you are all pussies who can't take a proper punch, so you use a bullet to compensate! you make me sick with the mention of guns. Kris Parker would hate your guts you knobhead

  • the problem with your argument is that where your from people dont carry guns. so they dont need protection from guns. here its basically shoot or get shot. sure i dont carry a gun and im willing to brawl. but if i get a gun pulled on me and my life is threatened what am i supposed to do? youre lucky you dont have to worry about that so much.

  • fair point mate, but gun crime does exist in britain, and people, do die, we are just a smaller country, believe me, it is just as dangerous. at least you have a point unlike HardBody who lives in the stone age.

  • yea im aware of gun violence in britain thats why i said you dont have to worry about that so much instead of you dont have to worry about that. yea i despise the ignorance of many of my fellow americans. but it is what it is.

  • nice reply from an intelligent american, let's talk about the glory of the hip hop culture cos that's what this is about! KRS One for vice president!!!

  • it wasnt someone black who set the ball rolling, without black people there would be no hip hop.

  • @roslergoater Kool Herc gave you and all of us this music at a time when it was considered black music and because it was black music it was there not, worthy of mainstream play. THAT is racism. Herc effectively said 'just because my music is black doesn't mean it is not for everyone': bringing people together. If you say that his colour don't matter, you take away from him the achievement of fact that he overcame bigotry and racism and made something for everyone to enjoy regardless of colour.

  • @roslergoater who gives a fuck? we all have black people to thank for hip hop and its precursors...

  • @roslergoater cage kynnels kills it, eyedea, slug of the atmosphere, beastie boys are really good they mixed elements of rock and disco with rap, high and mighty, all white legends...underground hiphop REAL hiphop cares...hiphop is a culture it cant be limited to one race...as long as u live as a B-Boy ur part of the movement

  • @roslergoater beastie boys can out rap who????? nigga please!!!

  • Kool DJ Herc is Jamaican you numb skull. We Are focusing on Hip -hop in the US not in Jamaica.

    Know your History..

  • You have just been blocked for acting like a retard.

Be respectful when commenting on others peoples channels dip shit.

  • dude hip hop was just a couple of people trying to make the best out of a bad situation..since they didnt know how to play instruments they took turntables and started mixing, and stole their electricity from the street lights and threw blocpartys there bboys came in they moved to the beat mc's werent even cool then it was just the dj saying a few words to keep it alive.. i could tell you a lot more but this is knowledge you should know not learn...

  • @culturehop He started hip hop in america

  • you people make me laugh claiming that jamaicans started hip hop. deejaying is just one aspect of hip hop. You forget about artists like james brown and the last poets. Kool herc just revolutioized the way hip hop was heard. Hip hop was a movement that was spawned by black american and puerto rican youth. Alot of people don't know that ska rocksteady and reggae were heavily influenced by american R&B. try telling a jamaican we started reggae. jamaicans trying to claim hip hop is absurd.

  • Dude, he lived in NY. He incorporated his ska to R&B. He just happened to be Jamaican.

Remember, hip hop has love for all cultures.

    PEACE

  • Respect To The Father Of Hip-Hop Kool DJ Herc.. Respects to B-Boys and B-Girls.. To all the young cats stop listening to your commercial rap Like Lil Wayne and all that crap. Watch The Freshest Kids Learn More about The Hip-Hop Culture. (South Bronx South South Bronx)

  • Hip hop was created by a mixture of Jazz, jamaican, African American and funk please do your research before posting false statements.

  • If you go to wiki it even credits Jamaican immigrants for hip hop, specifically Kool Herc. No reason to put people on blast and ban them fot pointing this out, it's fact.

  • @culturehop You're right, there are so many roots to hip hop - black, brown and white - for instance - who invented the drum machine?

  • herc was the pioneer this is some old skool legendary ish

  • respekt the USA

  • Much respect to Herc. Peace to da Bronx.
