No wonder Tom acts and feels the way he does. They wonder why his whole attitude has changed? Sure, he's a teenager, but they treat him like an idiot. He appears a lot more high functioning than they give him credit for, and they are really doing him NO favors by snooping through his things and killing his chances of making close relationships. I don't think it's any surprise that he wants to run away.
To add to my post below, the guy that I dated looked just like him, but could speak very well. He actually spoke three languages fluidly. However, he did have preocupations with odd things like remembering all the wars and dictators we have had in the world for like 100 years or so. He talked non stop and didn't really listen to what I had to say. Ya, I would now say that he had a form of Autism.
I used to date a guy that looked and acted like that and he was highly intelligent, but he lived with his parents. I knew he had problems, but after awhile I started guessing that something wasn't right. He was always on a regimented schedule and if I distracted him from his daily rituals, he would become very angry. One day I asked him if he was diagnosed with anything like in the video and he said yes. we also didn't have sex. He broke with me because he said that I was a distraction.
i cant believe what im seeing... Tom's mom.. is she for REAL? O_o , going through his stuff? STEALING? talking about him like he's in idiot? im autistic too and if that was my mom, oh dear, i would pay her right back :P id steal all of that bitch's stuff... hide that shit 5 feet under..
Tom is acting out because they are treating him like a 9 year old! Going through his things and not letting him have a social life because "he might" get hurt is hurting him more than what his peers would ever do with him!
@Piccadillyo -- i know it seems that way, but toms mum is actually lovely :) since the program he has way more indipendence and stuff :) did amazing in college, getting top grades. Doing fab in uni aswell :) he's grown up so much, and its lovely too see how well he's doing ...so much has changed!, proper proud girlfriend here, hehe :)
@MrZoeSmells yeah the first time i watched this documentary I didn't see the part where she looked through his things and thought she was a really lovely woman. I'm sure that's the case, it just struck me as a very difficult environment for an autistic guy to grow up - if I remember correctly he has a fair few siblings? - she must have had alot on her plate. So pleased to hear that Tom is happy and doing well, wishing the best for both of you :)
@Piccadillyo --- yeah he is 1 of 6! so she is very busy juggling family life and work life, it can be abit tough. awww thank you soo much, that is really lovely :) he actually made a update video on his personal channel :) so u can ask him questions on that if u like :) ... hope you're well :)
Man, I LOVE the Sooty Show! And I'm 35! Doesn't make me autistic... Tom's case is totally misdiagnosed. A more correct diagnosis would be 'rather awkward emo with pain in the arse mother'.
Thank you for posting this video. I see myself in each one.
I wish I could understand why so many people don't even want to understand others in the world they live in. Autistic people can make some of the best friends, help others see things from a different angle.
I'm 48 and life is much the same as when I was a teen. Life as a high functioning autistic is wonderderful, My mind creates beutiful worlds, makeing the real world a very dull place.
If my own mother observed my Blu-Ray and DVD collection which involves films such as The Terminator, Blade Runner and Donnie Darko, that would be fine. However, let's say, for argument's sake, she additionally picked up a copy of Thomas The Tank Engine on VHS from my childhood years and asserted that I only understood the the children's show in question, I would personally put her through a Saw scenario for insulting my intellect.
@kingtaco7 thanks for uploading, it's very nostalgic for me since rtf used to be my field of work. i understand them deeply and admire their strength...salute.
I'm an older person who was diagnosed with aspergers about 5 years ago. Prior to that people refered to me as anti-social and accepted it for what it was. I must say that I had my share of girlfriends in my day. Never seemed to be able to hang on to them for long term though. They usually refered to me as a cold hearted bastard. I am a highfuction asperger. My I.Q. is off the charts. My relatives always referred to me a selfish and aloof.
Toms mom took the letter away from him but she let him out drinking beer and cider in the back yard with a bunch of 19 year olds? That makes perfect sense!
I dont even know why they even bother having kids in the first place if she keeps treating him like a burden is like she rather feels sorry for herself rather than her own children.
The mother is rummaging through his room as if he would be a little child and she had to clean it up for him. If she doesn't let him this kind of privacy it's no wonder that he thinks he can't be himself at anywhere.
I always thought autistic people were too introverted to care about the world around them; that they were happy being left alone. While there are indeed some extreme cases like that, these documentaries have proven me terribly wrong. I feel for these individuals who do want to fit in; who do want to make friends and live a life as a member of society, but are hampered by their condition and people's views on them. I feel ashamed for having been so narrowminded, but at least now I'm enlightened.
Autism runs in my family a little bit and i suspect i actually have Aspergers down to reclusiveness & Agoraphobia. I'm 21 and never had a gf or a job & have constantly thought about dying caused by myself, but i also have awkward conversations aswell which i don't realise until after i've caught on by the persons face the worst for me though is butting into peoples talking and trying to read their lip movement, otherwise i tend to get very annoyed, but my sleep in the daytime has gotten bad.
Denying children (and especially adolescents and adults) their privacy and freedom just because they're 'different' in whatever way is truly appalling. Did she think that autists don't need privacy? If anything I'd say privacy is a delight when your autistic, to have some time to withdraw in peace and quiet.
i'm 26 and i fucking love sooty and heavy metal too man !!!! your a legend dude!!!!! keep shredding that guitar and you'll end up in an awesome band and tour the world!!!!! best of luck :)
I actually think Tom's mum is relatively a good mum given the circumstances. I, too can also have mood swings like Tom and it must be very hard for the people involved to deal with it. Sure there can still be room for improvement but it could be a lot worse also.
his mum is saying she wants people 2 not laugh at him but yet shes giving them more reason 2 by saying he watches sooty theres nothing wrong with that but shes saying it in a voice which suggests it is im not surprised tom runs away and is fed up
wow my name is alex and i have aspergers and im looking 4 love and i have social communication disorder and i still live at home with my mum but i am only 16 wow so much in common
I want to be friends with Tom. I don't care if he threatens his father with a knife before, and hurts his mother, it's his parents fault. God bless you Tom!
Tom you must find your way. The way you see things and understand them, no one could possibly replace. This is your gift, and it comes with a price. From this you will grow buddy, you will learn things in this life, people wouldn't dare to dream of knowing. It will be hard because you will be a lot on your own. Find people who understand you! Who are patient and caring enough to do that. The rest will be poison until you grow up to be a man. You are a blessing to this world. Take care now. Bye
He hasn't lost compassion, he's just acting out what he feels to be getting from the world around. Lack of compassion. This young boy is filled with compassion for the world around him, and when he gets so little back, it's only natural to hurt, and to feel awkward. And the cartoon's he's watching he likes them because they are innocent. There is a lot of fucking dirt in thins life as everyone might of noticed. For someone who's sensitive is a lot harder to grow up. Assholes! Peace out! :)
@CristianOprisanu: Allot about what you are daying I am liking. His mother is half right about him out in the world, but completely naive about what to make about it:.
Tom,if you can read this.Hang in there buddy.Your parents are complete idiots, and your family too. If i am right, your far to sensitive to be understood by them, they are too ignorant, to know how to care and understand someone like you. Sensitivity can be a blessing but also a curse. There is nothing wrong with you. You only feel this way because the people around you are so different. You don't have to be like them. Be strong, and hold on to the things you believe in, you will be a great man
The mom may be somewhat justified. I don't think she's being overprotective because the other kids are totally normal. Hell, she let the other kid throw a damn party in their back yard complete with chicks and alcohol. She's probably tired, frustrated, and worried. The kid's impulsive and angry. Who knows when he'll hurt himself.
@simonbuenosaires that's what happens with people who have autisims parents. they believe that because they are diffrent that they can't cope. i'm autisic but my mum has given me the freedom to do what i want and learn from my own mistakes. i agree tom's mum should give him more freedom to be his own person and learn from what his own mistakes are
