My dog was like that as well. He would get very upset when we would play fight and wrestle with eachother, he would start barking and biting whoever was on top or doing the pushing or whatever. :D RIP charlie :(
my gsd x protected my baby yrs ago i was in a phone box with pram out side (obviously) and sky was tied to pram, she would just sitt there and, my baby was crying when alll of a sudden i herd sky attack/agressily barking and a crash, when i turned around sky was trying to get some stupid woman who apprently went to bounce the pram and sky flew at her... RIP sky
I just watched a video of another 6th grader who asked if a untrained dog would protect and I'm sorry to say she disabled comments unlike here. When the girl did her test it was flawed, she never bonded with the dog and therefore would not protect here. Lost my GSD over a year ago now, miss her dearly but not ready to place her in the deep pocket of my heart and bring in a new one but when I do it will be a GSD!
@oscar7610 Without proper outfitting like a bitework mit? Yes, it will hurt. The German Shepherd has a bite force of about 238 pounds and will not let go unless he's called off. Yes, yes it will hurt.
@gsd767 Yeah I agree. I attended a seminar with a trainer from Germany and his take on it was that the GSD wasn't the best at any one thing but it was second best at everything you would want a dog to do..
@TheDelianLeague wolves do not weigh 15 stone you downy, they weigh maximum of 40kg, not even that in most cases, now pick your tupée back up and stop skanking!
You're playing a stupid, dangerous game with the dog and teaching him things that can get him put down. The dog knows he can bite you in places that aren't padded, and one day he might.
What a good dog! GSDs are the best babysitters. My brother and I never got away with anything growing up. Our Sarge always tattled on us. And he would take a bullet for us, if he had to. He passed away three years ago, and we are now on our second GSD. Once you get one, you have to have one in the house. Great dogs, and this one is a wonderful example!
Dogs are protective of their loved ones regardless of who is threatening the owner. I have a gsd and he will get very aggressive toward me if I even play attack my gf....and vice versa....I think its a natural instinct like a mother protecting their baby. Yes well trained dogs are capabe of defending a family member much better but I think my dog would protect me in an instant. Even if he just barked or charged it would be enough to ward off an attacker..
@powder2222 well some breeds are more drivy [malinois, gsd, dobermans] and willingly attack in arranged situatiuons - if they are taught to [or not averted to do it]. However many specimens of mollosoide and bully breeds refuse showing off their teeth when there's no real danger; in life threatning circumstances `battle dogs` usually fight till death.
That dog can literally throw you around and rip your arm out of your socket. And hes not going to stop until you do. Thats just how dogs are. They will risk their life no matter the cost when you have that special bond with them. Good GSD!!
this dogs are trained wrong they just bite your one arm and stay focused on that arm only well what if that person has knife in other hand and starts stabbing the dog ? well trained dog in my opinion should first knock you down on ground and then go on multiple locations starting from your face !
Lovely Dog but guys they do not hav the most powerful jaw & niether does the Rotti. The larger the skull the greater the bite. I'm not exactly sure which breed has the official record but it will be of Mastiff size as I hav seen a Mastiff record a little over 500lb. However, jaw power does not mean that a dog will win a fight against a dog with a less powerful jaw as it's all about balance. You need speed, aggression, pain threshold, instinct etc. If u disagree please b polite on reply.
@BlindMagSoprano Compared to what though? I have only managed to see a video where a 15stone wolf recorded approx 406lb. Now I have seen a mastiff record just over 500lb so unless you have a video I can watch that tells me differently im afraid I will not be convinced. Thanks
@TheLieselVontrapp ha ha! i know it's not relevant but scroll down these comments and see for yourself why. However I am not in anyway saying a GSD is no good as they are a fantastic breed. Arguably the most versatile breed in the world. I have had 4 GSD's in my life all different but all fantastic. I now have an Akita as I love the wolf look but after losing my last GSD I could never have another.
It is good to know that my 2 shepherds will bite the shit out of an intruder! I have no worries leaving them with my wife when I work night shift! if you break into my house then you risk major injury or death! Your choice!
CommodoreSpartan i SOOO agree, i was watching Dogs 101- German Shepherd, and it said GSD's have the bite force of 2,038 POUNDS of pressure! O.O WOOT! im going to be getting a GSD puppy, cant wait!! =D

i have a GSD mix and my mother has a mix of something else and both dogs defend the house and us a great deal. . we are their family as they are ours. just like a dog that has grown up with a child will defend to the death . . . its not always training and its not always GSDs both of the dogs are great with people, kids everyone . . . but if someone from the family is not home and you enter the yard or house you will be attacked. .
i have to agree with catzilla on this, i never trained any of my dogs (ive had other dogs aside from GSD) and theve all defended thier property and the immediate family, i think its more defending their territory then defending us, but they still do it, course im not sure what would happen if a person came in the yard thats a bit different, dont know if theyd attack or just keep barking
This is not a matter of opinion. The fact is, most dogs would rather run than fight. Ask an attack dog trainer and they will tell you the same. Most dogs aren't even properly bred so they don't retain the guard instinct they are suppose to have.
Dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years and in the past couple hundred in particular, that 'violent' or primal instinct has been bred out mostly
How much you wanna bet gsd and other breeds won't try and defend family? Dogs know when harmful attemps are made against his family. I can gurantee you 1000% that if ANYONE outside the immediate family tried to hurt me my gsd would go to defend. And he was not trained... And yes he is friendly to everyone as long as they do not try and break into our house and as long as no one tries to hurt me or family
People have this misconception that showering their dog with love will make the dog protect them from harm. It just doesn't' work like that. Without training, many dogs don't understand what is a threat and what isn't. If a dog attacks someone, it's usually because THEY feel threatened, not to protect their family. Ask any experience attack dog trainer and they'll tell you the same.
idk i think on the whole most gsd are automatic defenders of their familys, its in their genetic heitage after all, my girl is very defensive of my family and ive trained her and raised her with plenty of other dogs, best dogs round in my opinion
They aren't necessarily gonna defend you unless they are trained. Dogs are more likely to flee from danger than anything, and if they DO react aggressively, it's because they are protecting THEMSELVES, not you. Sorry, that's just how it works. And this isn't my opinion, it's fact. Ask any other personal protection dog trainer.
u wont find a better all rounder than a gsd.. they will automatically defend there family and make the perfect pets too so loving and loyal. as stated already avoid pets shops and breeders... i got mine 8 months old from a rescue centre... fitted into the family perfectly and just dotes on my 10 year old son.
There are things your vet cannot see by doing a simple check up. Dogs sold in pet stores are not properly bred. They come from puppymills (worse case scenario) or private breeders who do not care enough to find out who will end up taking care of the puppies they produce so they sell them to pet stores. Your dog has a higher chance of having genetic disorders that may not be apparent now. And I'm sure you were charged as if he was top quality.
I am NOT saying that your dog is not worth loving or that he is less of a dog, I'm just saying that the dogs sold to pet stores do not come from good places or breeding stocks. This also explains dogs with inborn aggression or fearful behaviors. They cannot help it because ofo their genes. It's very sad how people are too ignorant and or just care about the money more that producing happy, healthy dogs. This is why I would only purchase from a private reputable breeder.
I had a cop hire me to paint his house who had two small children and a young male shepard to look after them. He would let his kids play outside with only the dog around. That dog would not let me within ten feet of his kids - amazing dogs!
Awesome video man! I was also blessed with having a German Shepherd to grow up with when I was her age. It is better then anything or any toy money can buy a kid. I t brough back memories! They will do anything to protect there family!I
my german sheperd just recently went to my moms house, she lives there now. shes there guard dog and ive done this with my 4 year old sister...i had a ski mask on and i came into the room with a knife. hahaai was scared of my own dog for a second...i can sleep good at night knowin that Holly (My dog) will be protectin the kids when im not there to do it. ill try to upload a video....she truly is a beautiful dog, shes all tan and has the most amazing coat. i love her to death...but i do miss her
damnnnn that looked like my old shepard Gambler that I had as a kid.. Great dog he was...very protective of me and nearly attacked my dad when my dad went "Gahhhhh"! to scare me as a joke. Lol....my dad had to leave the room and come back in once the dog calmed down.
Couldnt you train say this dog to bit an intruder, but what happens if the mother in-law visits which you dont see that often, how does it know tht she isnt a killer? couldnt the dog just attack anything or do they have to have a hat and be black?
@nigel101 GSD's and all other dogs can sense "evil intentions", if a mother in law etc came in, she wouldnt set off the shepherds "alarm" to danger the same way as this intruder did.
This video brought me to tears. To see the gentle, loving ability of that gorgeous dog who wouldn't hesitate to protect a loved one, awesome! GSD's rule!
LOL, I love pitbulls and also Rottweilers - awesome dogs to have around. Besides our Gita, we also have a croatian sheepdog - he's as crazy as a dog can be, but sooo cute and funny! Since I have dogs, I can't imagine a life without dogs anymore!
And I succeeded, she loves dogs more than anything, knows to interact with dogs safely and dogs feel very attracted by her. I love to see her interacting with our dogs, having dogs really enriches the life of a child in a very special way.
Yet I see that still many parents have a certain prejudice towards breeds like the GSD and project that prejudice on their kids. The other day, a little girl wanted to pet Gita and her mom pulled her back - really sad for that little girl and Gita.
Well, I guess it also depends on how animal-friendly your parents are when growing up. My parents were not animal-friendly and always acted, like dogs are just waiting for a chance to bite innocent children, so I didn't know how to interact with a dog when I was a kid, and it was kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy with that GSD. My parents still don't understand why I have dogs now, but my 9y/o dd is very good with dogs and growing up with them. I didn't want her to grow up afraid of dogs.
Well, as a child I was nearly bitten by one, so that is where my fear came from. But the moment I looked into her eyes first, she simply stole my heart. You can see her and our story in my video "Our croatian miracles". And she showed more people than just me - I'm afraid what life without her will be...:-(
And believe me, I used to be really terrified of GSDs before we got our Gita, but she taught me, how wonderful and smart these dogs are. She's all cool even during painful vet-treatments, but we can trust her judgement about people 100% and she would give her life for us if she had to. Unfortunaly, she was just diagnosed with cancer...:-( I can't bear the thought of losing her...:-(
the dog is going to bite anyone who walks in ur daughters vicinity? i personally think there is a difference between a companion dog and a gaurd dog, they cannot be the same because they will have to learn to be compassionate towards strangers instead of weary.
GSDs have an instinctive knowledge about people with bad ambitions - our Gita is what you call "everybody's darling" - but stiffens up when she sees a certain person, who threatened my hubby once. She didn't witness it, but her instinct tells her, that something isn't right with this guy. GSDs are just the very best dogs!
Thats a beautiful dog you have there! very handsome!
My GSD is like him, very affectionate but very protective. I have never trained her to be aggressive, but today my GSD Ellie went beserk and went for a couple of men who were following me and my friend thru the woods.
Ive never seen her behave like that! The men ran away when she went for them but it surprised me cause she flew at them with so much force!
Although i feel safer im more aware, i dont want her to become too protective :-S
Well you said they were following you... maybe they had bad ittentions which were reflected through their energy and your dog sensed it... and protected you without even knowing. One night my Lab did the same thing when our neighbors husband came out of the house, he was very scary that night... probably drunk or something. Dogs are amazing, its nice to have one around to see and hear and sense things in the world we can't. =] =]
pitbulls r amazing dogs they will show you as much love as you show them. Where i am from you have to have a strong breed of dog that can protect your loved ones when your not around.
I have had a hard time decided on what kind of dog i want it is between a pitbull and a german shepherd after seeing this i have no doubt in my mind that a gsd is the right dog to gaurd my girl. Thank you
my cousin had a very sweet GSD and i would never expect him to bite anyone, but one night he was walking home and this guy started pounding him, his GSD(craig)grabbed the guy on the arm and gust helled. the guy hit craig on the head and his head started bleeding. but craig wouldnt let go until the police arived and arested that fool.craig saved my cousins life and has the scar to prove it, but hes still a sweet dog.
loved video! I have a german shepherd who is my best buddy :-) BTW you can not give a german shepherd a swift kick in stomach or balls he'll tighten his bite hold. Your best bet is maybe to choke them out. if you can. I believe in dog obedience training and love for well balanced healthy dog. :-)
Shutzhund trials and 60 years of wartime experience has proven just exactly the opposite.....they will continue to attack you until you completely incapacitate them, ie you KILL them. FACT.
homeo - true but add that it depends on genes and training. Not all GSDs are that "hard" . esp you get American show dogs who have had the courage bred out of them. IMO look for a dog from Euro working lines, Sire with Sch III or equivalent, dam would be nice if she had a higher Sch title too but not as essential. then, with a close relationship with your family & you as your dogs leader it will protect by instinct but if you really want a protection dog you must do intense training
Intense training, eh? Tell that to the guy that shook my wife's hand at the park last week....got a little excited, a little animated....almost got a little BITTEN. Scooby went from a big baby to having to be restrained in a split second, tried to get the guy. He's well socialized, but this guy was loud and animated and when he took her hand he almost lost his! I don't need a protection dog, anyway- I have Scooby and a carry permit. Pity the fool that robs us....peace....
if a GSD wanted to bite you in anger, you would have a broken hand, I'd like to see anyone who isnt totally drugged up be able to coordinate a kick in that state
Wrong German Shepherds Have Stronger Bite Huge Wolf can put out 58 PSI of a bite GSD Can deliver a whopping 49 to 52 PSI Peope mistake Rottweiler for being more powerfuller because there jaw size is wider GSD jaws is longer Rottweiler waste of time thats my oppinion they are lazy, fat , and not too good around kids and certanly not Trustable GSD Will die for you and never turn on its loved one whats why they were rated 1st Smartest Breeds
@i5Alex normally, even if you manage to get the german shepherd off, you're arm is in serious condition. That man is wearing protection, real attackers arent.....
Actually, GSD's have a greater bite force, thus far. It's like a compatition between the breeds, one bites harder the other has to step up and take the title. But I know the current record was given to us by a GSD.
@CommodoreSpartan Hey buddy this is the clip I was on about in my earlier post. Type in 'Dog Attack Styles' in youtube search bar & it is the national geographic video about a prehistoric wolf. They are comparing dog attack styles but explain and test how jaw power works.
This has an amazing story and shows how loyal and protecyive sheperds are

And yes he is friendly to everyone as long as they do not try and break into our house and as long as no one tries to hurt me or family
CatZilla2007 2 years ago 2
People have this misconception that showering their dog with love will make the dog protect them from harm. It just doesn't' work like that. Without training, many dogs don't understand what is a threat and what isn't. If a dog attacks someone, it's usually because THEY feel threatened, not to protect their family. Ask any experience attack dog trainer and they'll tell you the same.
HowToGetFreebies 2 years ago
idk i think on the whole most gsd are automatic defenders of their familys, its in their genetic heitage after all, my girl is very defensive of my family and ive trained her and raised her with plenty of other dogs, best dogs round in my opinion
joeycoop 2 years ago
They aren't necessarily gonna defend you unless they are trained. Dogs are more likely to flee from danger than anything, and if they DO react aggressively, it's because they are protecting THEMSELVES, not you. Sorry, that's just how it works. And this isn't my opinion, it's fact. Ask any other personal protection dog trainer.

What's stupid about it?
HowToGetFreebies 2 years ago 2
u wont find a better all rounder than a gsd.. they will automatically defend there family and make the perfect pets too so loving and loyal. as stated already avoid pets shops and breeders... i got mine 8 months old from a rescue centre... fitted into the family perfectly and just dotes on my 10 year old son.
PROTEK123 2 years ago
True, I think GSDs are arguably the most versatile breed along with the Dobe. However, they don't necessarily "automatically" defend their family.
HowToGetFreebies 2 years ago
i will get a gsd
kevrham 2 years ago
Don't just get one based off what you see on a YouTube video, though. And avoid pet stores.
HowToGetFreebies 2 years ago
i got mine from a pet store an theres nothing wrong with him.the vet said he's in perfect condition.i dont know what your problem is?
sumtimewin 2 years ago
There are things your vet cannot see by doing a simple check up. Dogs sold in pet stores are not properly bred. They come from puppymills (worse case scenario) or private breeders who do not care enough to find out who will end up taking care of the puppies they produce so they sell them to pet stores. Your dog has a higher chance of having genetic disorders that may not be apparent now. And I'm sure you were charged as if he was top quality.
HowToGetFreebies 2 years ago

Couldnt you train say this dog to bit an intruder, but what happens if the mother in-law visits which you dont see that often, how does it know tht she isnt a killer? couldnt the dog just attack anything or do they have to have a hat and be black?
nigel101 2 years ago
@nigel101 GSD's and all other dogs can sense "evil intentions", if a mother in law etc came in, she wouldnt set off the shepherds "alarm" to danger the same way as this intruder did.

LOL, I love pitbulls and also Rottweilers - awesome dogs to have around. Besides our Gita, we also have a croatian sheepdog - he's as crazy as a dog can be, but sooo cute and funny! Since I have dogs, I can't imagine a life without dogs anymore!
Ballerinamommy76 2 years ago
Granted, Gita is the star for the neighbourhood kids and my daughter's classmates and enjoys the attention...;-)
She apparently has a mission on this world - convincing people that GSDs aren't evil. She already helped a few people over their GSD-waryness.
Ballerinamommy76 2 years ago
And I succeeded, she loves dogs more than anything, knows to interact with dogs safely and dogs feel very attracted by her. I love to see her interacting with our dogs, having dogs really enriches the life of a child in a very special way.
Yet I see that still many parents have a certain prejudice towards breeds like the GSD and project that prejudice on their kids. The other day, a little girl wanted to pet Gita and her mom pulled her back - really sad for that little girl and Gita.
Ballerinamommy76 2 years ago
Well, I guess it also depends on how animal-friendly your parents are when growing up. My parents were not animal-friendly and always acted, like dogs are just waiting for a chance to bite innocent children, so I didn't know how to interact with a dog when I was a kid, and it was kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy with that GSD. My parents still don't understand why I have dogs now, but my 9y/o dd is very good with dogs and growing up with them. I didn't want her to grow up afraid of dogs.
Ballerinamommy76 2 years ago
Well, as a child I was nearly bitten by one, so that is where my fear came from. But the moment I looked into her eyes first, she simply stole my heart. You can see her and our story in my video "Our croatian miracles". And she showed more people than just me - I'm afraid what life without her will be...:-(
Ballerinamommy76 2 years ago
And believe me, I used to be really terrified of GSDs before we got our Gita, but she taught me, how wonderful and smart these dogs are. She's all cool even during painful vet-treatments, but we can trust her judgement about people 100% and she would give her life for us if she had to. Unfortunaly, she was just diagnosed with cancer...:-( I can't bear the thought of losing her...:-(
Ballerinamommy76 2 years ago 2
That's how we lost Lady, our Swedish Elkhound...
Watching the Vet put her down undid a lifetime of therapy in a very short time... I had to be on antidepressants for a year and a half after...
Then I had to have a bunch of other things culminating in Tegretol... Since the Tegretol, I've been good to go..

the dog is going to bite anyone who walks in ur daughters vicinity? i personally think there is a difference between a companion dog and a gaurd dog, they cannot be the same because they will have to learn to be compassionate towards strangers instead of weary.
eastcoastin 2 years ago
GSDs have an instinctive knowledge about people with bad ambitions - our Gita is what you call "everybody's darling" - but stiffens up when she sees a certain person, who threatened my hubby once. She didn't witness it, but her instinct tells her, that something isn't right with this guy. GSDs are just the very best dogs!
Ballerinamommy76 2 years ago 4
Thats a beautiful dog you have there! very handsome!
My GSD is like him, very affectionate but very protective. I have never trained her to be aggressive, but today my GSD Ellie went beserk and went for a couple of men who were following me and my friend thru the woods.
Ive never seen her behave like that! The men ran away when she went for them but it surprised me cause she flew at them with so much force!
Although i feel safer im more aware, i dont want her to become too protective :-S
chazza69 2 years ago 3
Well you said they were following you... maybe they had bad ittentions which were reflected through their energy and your dog sensed it... and protected you without even knowing. One night my Lab did the same thing when our neighbors husband came out of the house, he was very scary that night... probably drunk or something. Dogs are amazing, its nice to have one around to see and hear and sense things in the world we can't. =] =]

my cousin had a very sweet GSD and i would never expect him to bite anyone, but one night he was walking home and this guy started pounding him, his GSD(craig)grabbed the guy on the arm and gust helled. the guy hit craig on the head and his head started bleeding. but craig wouldnt let go until the police arived and arested that fool.craig saved my cousins life and has the scar to prove it, but hes still a sweet dog.

loved video! I have a german shepherd who is my best buddy :-) BTW you can not give a german shepherd a swift kick in stomach or balls he'll tighten his bite hold. Your best bet is maybe to choke them out. if you can. I believe in dog obedience training and love for well balanced healthy dog. :-)

Monger4142 2 years ago
Shutzhund trials and 60 years of wartime experience has proven just exactly the opposite.....they will continue to attack you until you completely incapacitate them, ie you KILL them. FACT.
homeostasis4me 2 years ago
homeo - true but add that it depends on genes and training. Not all GSDs are that "hard" . esp you get American show dogs who have had the courage bred out of them. IMO look for a dog from Euro working lines, Sire with Sch III or equivalent, dam would be nice if she had a higher Sch title too but not as essential. then, with a close relationship with your family & you as your dogs leader it will protect by instinct but if you really want a protection dog you must do intense training
clevii 2 years ago
Intense training, eh? Tell that to the guy that shook my wife's hand at the park last week....got a little excited, a little animated....almost got a little BITTEN. Scooby went from a big baby to having to be restrained in a split second, tried to get the guy. He's well socialized, but this guy was loud and animated and when he took her hand he almost lost his! I don't need a protection dog, anyway- I have Scooby and a carry permit. Pity the fool that robs us....peace....

MarkkPS3 2 years ago
Yeah.... good luck with that. GSDs have the biting force of great power, second only to the Rottweiler. Good luck getting that vice grip off.
CommodoreSpartan 2 years ago 20
Wrong German Shepherds Have Stronger Bite Huge Wolf can put out 58 PSI of a bite GSD Can deliver a whopping 49 to 52 PSI Peope mistake Rottweiler for being more powerfuller because there jaw size is wider GSD jaws is longer Rottweiler waste of time thats my oppinion they are lazy, fat , and not too good around kids and certanly not Trustable GSD Will die for you and never turn on its loved one whats why they were rated 1st Smartest Breeds

Actually, GSD's have a greater bite force, thus far. It's like a compatition between the breeds, one bites harder the other has to step up and take the title. But I know the current record was given to us by a GSD.
Skkae 1 year ago
@CommodoreSpartan Hey buddy this is the clip I was on about in my earlier post. Type in 'Dog Attack Styles' in youtube search bar & it is the national geographic video about a prehistoric wolf. They are comparing dog attack styles but explain and test how jaw power works.
