  • @nipperooney Yes, Jaco did write it. I'm sure everyone who's on this video knows this. It's a great interpretation and great tribute to one of the greatest Jazz bassists ever.

  • Awesome awesome awesome. Though the guitarist doesn't seem to be serving much purpose other than making weird sound effects...

  • @FishStik5ive I think he's supposed to be playing what the bass is playing but I can barely hear it.

  • @FishStik5ive Also he messes up during the main line when he's playing with Marcus Miller, so I think he plays softer because of that.

  • The problem with this guy is: he don't understand MUSIC! Listen to the original and forget about the fake

  • @papagaio1696 Yes, he don't understand music, and you doesn't understand grammars.

    Dumbass.

  • @mimeywimey Tens razão. Vou começar a comentar na minha língua para ver se me entendes oh gringo.

  • Met Marcus long ago when he was playing with Lenny White at the El Mocombo. Sitting on an old-fashioned radiator just practicing his bass unplugged and alone outside the extremely 'cloudy' (cough, cough!), dressing room- he was the nicest guy, friendly, more than happy to answer questions, maybe in his late teens. We talked for about ten minutes. I'm sure that if I had asked to borrow Nick Moroch's guitar, Marcus would have been happy to jam with me!

  • Thing i love about this video and the thing that some people don't understand is that Marcus Miller has his own style and take on things so when he does a cover he does it his own way. Prob doesn't mean that he doesn't disrespect the artist he is covering or whatever. So why give the negative comments on this video. If you play music in your own unique way i have loadsa respect for that. If he was doin a generic copy then i wouldn't have as much respect for them cause its already been done.

  • Why does his own music and band suck?

  • A very pale copy of the original!

    JACO FTW

  • Alright!! Come clean! Who the hell disliked this bloody vid!!!

  • This is sex.

  • GRANDIOSO !!!

  • The brass sound like the music from simpsons hit n run,

    I know its very irrelevant!

    awesomee

  • Where's the car chase?

  • 1:49 Marcus Miller says: If you dont like this, Fuck You!

  • @OmegaBassArg Yeah i remember Marcus saying something similar to me too. he said to me "if you Don't like it, awa 'n lie in yer own Pish"!!

    Marcus Miller, What a Man!!

  • Excellent.

  • muito massa toka muito

  • Incredible....

  • 1:14 this slide could create a Black Hole.

  • Hey Marcus i like your frets! Now just get rid of them...

  • Comment removed

  • The keyboard in this is definitely a lot smoother and better than that of the recording from The Sun Don't Lie, just needs turning up. Superb amount of power emanating from Marcus here.

  • Hey guitarist, get a haircut silky boy.

  • he is using a fking jazz bass, isn't he?

  • @Flaxilver yup, his signature model. It has an ash body instead of the more regular alder, which gives it a punchier tone. Throw in the DR strings, and of course, Marcus' hands, and all of a sudden it sounds killer.

  • @philmastro Haha, I just imagine someone ordering a custom through Fender and asking for Marcus' hands to be put in.

  • one of my fav clips on youtube

  • About all your discussion about 6 string basses...

I'm probably going to get a 6 string fretless bass in a week or so.

If you use 6 strings you are not a guiar player.

Its called ERG-Extended Range Guitar.(here its bass but still).

You have more options because of the extra strings, thats all.

    Everyone has his own taste.

I've seen CRAZY bass players on 4 and 5 string basses, and I've seen CRAZY bass players on 6 string basses.

I also saw some crazy bass players that had more than 6 strings.

    :)...

  • Nothing wrong with anything Marcus does here.

  • I like it better. The horns sound less sketchy.

  • Don't agree with the negative comments - it's a great tribute from one great bass player to another - Marcus has just funked it up a bit. Brilliant!

  • Marcus Miller is no doubt a great player, but "Teen Town" slapped just doesn't sound as cool as fingered (frettless). This rendition is missing something. It doesn't feel right.

  • Marcus is in the Hall of Fame.... but this version is so dreadfully light. ZERO punch. Little inspiration on what the song was about. A shame. Still like, but a bit to surgical...IMHO.

  • @kevinebarron maybe we listened to a different video.....

  • Comment removed

  • 33 people try to play that

  • @ejdbk Playing like a "frickinn guitarist not a bassist" is playing with a 6 string bass and piccolo strings. Hell, even without a 6 string bass ;) .

  • groovy as fuck

  • I want to be him... Or at least have his thumb

  • @hereawhile Fuck his thumb, checkout Jaco , wrote it and played it best

  • The faces in the video ARE NOT EPIC! They are amusing. Learn the definitions of words before you use them.

  • @Apathesis0 learn to shut up before talking

  • @pezzu90 No. That word is so tired, overused, and misused. Great video, just not "epic" faces.

  • Does a longer version exist, please?

  • fucking great!

  • that drummer is soooo good, smooth and all

  • marcus is the classiest PIMP ever

  • OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH Mannnnnn! that just is sooooo damn good, holf fuck what a band behind him too...wowowowowow

  • Ceux qui n'aime pas je les aimes pas !

  • @CristianTejadaU

That is Dean Brown I think

  • who is the guitarrist??

  • 4 strings 4 ever

  • marcus does it justice almost eerie as to how it seems to blend into his style like its some beethoven or mozart bass god song which it was it was jaco pastorius rest in peace my friend we miss you

  • Good grief...wow...truly a salute to Jaco and Mr. Miller's incredible talent...

  • 0:49 = epic face

  • @FinnishBassBoy more like 0:35 = epic face/jizz in my pants

  • @FinnishBassBoy

0:49 = Im Marcus, and Im one BAD motherfucker

  • @pleaseutube

yeah,i was close minded, but i would never get a six strings bass though,i don't want another trebly sounding high string,i would get five stringed bass with a low b though

  • @ejdbk i know what you mean with the whole 6 string thing, but if you look in the vid, marcus has a 5 and a 6 string behind him so who are we to judge lol

  • @Jwk1706

oh no,i take that comment back

when i started to understand the whole music dynamic, and finally understood the diff between the strings,i am totally open minded about the number of the strings on a bass, six is for higher range, the fifth string is used for lower range, personally i know i will get a five string bass eventually, but six strings, nah,i hate high notes, not much of a soloist, plus i can solo with five\four strings, john entwistle solod using four strings,so its ok for me

  • Hallelujah!

  • I barely can play this with my fingers so SLAP it?! Good God... :P

  • Who is the lead guitarist in this video? Is he playing a Parker MIDI (and amazing)?

  • It's Dean Brown on the guitar

  • Guud Gawd!!!!! That tone is Monster Millers's signature sound. Love it!

  • Fan of W.R. fan of M.M. and now fan of Poogie Bell !!!

  • Mitico,Grande,Maestro: Questo è Marcus

  • Visit our channel: rock-prog band Gran Torino: our album is coming in 2011: grantorinoProg.

  • Where is this from?

  • :O That snare!

  • OMG the slides by the end!

    LOVE marcus miller!

  • @eyeswideopen48 Hell yeah! Better to create a successful cover using your own style than try to sound like Jaco

  • call me weird, last time i tried to play this, its actually easier to double thumb then finger 0.o

  • @thtmusicloser Its b/c the opening rip is easier thumbing than finger stilye

  • 4 strings - awesome, this is how bass should be played

    5 strings - ok,i guess

6 strings - you are a frickinn guitarist not a bassist

  • @ejdbk Hah indeed. It's funny I see these bassists thinking they need to play with 6 string monsters. All the greats like Wooten, Clarke and Miller need is 4 strings. Hell they could probably play better with 1 string.

  • @Tharapita

yeah, they could make anything sound good

  • @ejdbk dude shut up.

  • @ejdbk Nope, you're wrong. Bass player must not hesitate to choose to play on a 6 strings bass "because it would be like being a fucking guitarist", some times i wonder how some can come to think like this. As a musician you do what you please and others can go & fuck off.

    By the way, usually the 6th string on bass is a (1) B string, not a E (4 or 5 don't remember) string like a guitar 8)

  • @MrSuperdico a six string bass goes (from lowest in pitch to highest in pitch) B E A D G C

  • @MrSuperdico I tend to feel like the better you are, the more strings you are entitled to. However, adding one string would need a HUGE increase in skill to go along with it. Beginner-intermediate have 4. Experts can have five. Having 6 strings is reserved for those who want to play a song maybe without a guitarist. 11 strings are for those who want to play the super mario theme song.

  • @MrSuperdico you tune a 4 string EADG, a five string BEADG, a 6 string BEADGC, and even a 7 string BEADGCF

  • @MrSuperdico anyone that says such things don't know what an octave is.

  • Comment removed

  • @MrSuperdico Fuck!

  • This type of music compared to the one I grew up with is as similiar as black and white. No, I did not grow up with rap or techno, but the old school rock, like acdc and so on. Its weird for me to see a guitarist on the stage which I can barely hear, while the bass and the saxofones are in the focus all the time. It all happened when I decided to try a new instrument when going to college(I actually play guitar), and chose bass. Its like a completely different world, and im beggining to like it.

  • I still like Jaco`s version more, but this is awosome

  • marcus probably practices like a monster, yes he has skills

  • marcus is blasting through a jaco bass line with his thumb, way much harder

  • i replayed :46 so many times

  • marcus is the shit!

  • @sigfriddo totally stupid comment

  • can't ever...ever imagine myself ever playing like this.

  • fell in love with the original, but it's a fantastic styling

  • that drumer is in the zone!

  • That guitarist looks a little out of place

  • @420nyukkafoshizz the guitarist is the great Mike Stern. Yup, he's out of place but he is fucking nice.

  • @ProfessorCole96 I think it's Dean Brown playing guitar...isn't he?

  • @bassten39 being that you thought so to i think it is, both are new yorkers hahah

  • @bassten39 Yes it is!!......Listen to him with Billy Cobham, he's great!!

  • i wish this was my theme song

  • much better than jaco but i respect jaco.. this version much better it makes me alive and groove all the time =)

  • uffffffff super

  • Pimpin.

  • Pimpin.

  • its probably easier for this guy to play this song than it is for me to breathe XD

  • amazing

  • F a n t a s t i c

  • definetely better than i thot it would be bcuz of the slappin but its still clean

  • nothing beats the original song but this is A W S O M E !!!!!!!!!

  • Whilst I can appreciate Marcus's amazing technical proficiency, I don't enjoy this nearly as much as the original version. Jaco never slapped, he said that it 'kills the soul of the bass'. I find it somewhat a testament to Marcus's arrogance, if Jaco never slapped, why would you slap? If Jaco played a fretless, why play a fretted? Don't everyone hate on me, 'cos I appreciate how good he is, I just find this a bit disrespectful, which I'm sure was not his intention.

  • @HowPeculiar1 It's not disrespectful, on the contrary. it's the tribute of a great among the greatest to another of his rank. But it wouldn't be unrespectful even if I, average bassist among average bassists, played this tune in my way. It would be just living music. I bet Jaco feels very happy every time a musician plays his music, and the more personally interpreted, the best. I think this is one of his taughts. No hate on you, of course! :))

  • a couple of idiots here. I believe jealousy is one of the seven deadly sins. Meow!!!

  • Dude, this song is so hard to play the original way with fingers. I cant believe hes slapping it! this is a masterpiece, all my classmates listens to deathcore and heavy stuff and im into this stuff so im kinda "offstream" but what the hell its so funky!

  • This is his interpretation and tribute to Jaco, nothing more nothing less. Haters bitch all you want, just keep this in mind... Marcus Miller has something you will never have, it is called a Grammy. He also wrote and produced for Miles Davis. Marcus is an extremely accomplished musician.

  • @nathankizerian Oh yeah, 'cos everyone with Grammys are automatically great.

  • @nathankizerian Marcus is the shit, damn straight. However he might have a Grammy, but that is not Marcus's greatest attribute by any means. Being able to play such a challenging piece this funky, that's more impressive than a Grammy to a lot of musicians. And everyone bitching on this page might all have Grammys already, but they don't have the soul of Marcus Miller, that's for sure...

  • This is groovy!!!

But played with a Fretless bass sounds even better

  • Could somebody please introduce me to one of these slapbass-dissers that can actually play anything like this -or the even Jaco version for that matter? Because I have yet to meet one. If you can play something, then you are qualified to tell everyone how rubbish it is. If you can't, but you spread your opinion anyway, you're probably just jealous. Stop whining and get some practice in. x

  • who knew something this cool could create such a negative thread...

  • @alienufosarereal Thats what happens when all the jaco worshippers come out. Dang shame they can't let it go.

  • @cheerskiwi I don't think you know the definition of pretentious (you don't even know how to spell the word, so I'm probably correct).

  • This is the music I imagine is playing in the elevator that takes you straight to hell. Once in hell, I think "Butterfly" by Crazy Town is playing on an infinite loop. I play bass, and I respect people like Larry Graham and Louis Johnson (of The Brothers Johnson), but this Marcus doing Jaco (who I could also give a fuck about) stuff sounds way too sterile. This is nothing but a stage full of musicians who are way too focused on playing everything perfectly, and the music suffers because of it.

  • @BadComrade Your comment would be useful if it wasn't just pretencious biased bullshit

  • @BadComrade Im sure it would be in your ultimate best interest to just accept this for what it is and not find a way to nit-pick and emphasize negativity and make completely ignorant comments like saying they're way too focused on playing everything perfectly when all they're doing is covering a classic the way it was written with a little bit of slap creativity. The music isnt suffering because this is the way it was written and this is how its supposed to sound. Learn to respect fool.

  • How many of the 27 people who disliked this video play bass like this bloke??? None I think.

  • i like how he made it his own i think its way cool i like the jaco version better

  • Go Poogie Bell. Right in there.

  • Watch his other version at watch?v=9cjARtgDUCw. It is quite epic, and it's the full song.

  • @bassbiff Thank you.

    Trotzdem ausgezeichnet.

  • You bitches can say what you want about whoever but man Marcus has a BOSS hat

  • @tatersalad814

Lol, Im glad you bought up the hat. Marcus's playing is influenced by Jaco. But it doesn't stop there:

    wDQlSSOXU6A&feature=related

Miller's bitchen hat was inspired by... once again.... Jaco

lol Sorry dude, I just had to bring it up. I thought it was funny as hell. But I think we both agree that both are great bassists with very nice hats.

  • @ZappaFan101 that hat doesn't look like Marcus Miller's hat...

  • @tatersalad814

lol, I know I was just jokin. I just recalled seeing Jaco's hat on the other video and someone mentiond it was bitchin. Then your comment about Miller's hat being boss was kinna like deja vu

  • @ZappaFan101 I bet they both got the idea from Jimi, that guy wore a hilarious hat when he performed

  • This is truly GREAT! Playing a song of pastorius and than combined with his slap skills it's like wow! ;D

  • Where is the rest of this tune? Please.

  • stupendo!!!!

  • A technically difficult song can impress if well played, but when an artist can meld it with his own personality and style, and come out with something that's freakin' amazing, I just sit back & enjoy the ride. Jaco and Marcus could each play the alphabet song and make it gooooooood. What the musician brings to a song is every bit as important as the composition itself. Marcus DEFINITELY brought it!

  • woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow! amaizing

  • Marcus is not Jaco!! Jaco is not Marcus!! Jaco never improvised, he was a composer. Check your history! It doesn't begin and end with Jaco! It doesn't end with Marcus! It began with James Jamerson. As a soloist, it began with Stanley Clarke. I love Jaco! I prefer Marcus Miller because he is an improviser as well as a composer. And for the record, Marcus' finger style playing is second to none, other than Jimmy Haslip in my opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • @saxmanrh

That is an absurd statement! Anyone who ever toured with Jaco and/or has listened to his best live recordings will tell you that he could improvise. In the studio he liked to be a little prepared, but live he always improvised. Do you really think he would be regarded by many as the world's greatest bassist if he couldn't improvise? I strongly advise that you check YOUR history and stop making wild claims about Jaco.

  • @Musicenthusiasm

Its not that serious to me. You can check out Marcus' account of Jaco's solos if you like. It is documented. I'm not making this stuff up. Its not terrible that he didn't improvise solos. It makes him a phenom of a composer! If you prepare a solo, it is not improv. And you made a good point, which points out to me how much better his studio solos were. Jaco's live solos were nothing compared to his studio stuff. Guys like Jimmy Haslip, Marcus, Victor, Bona

  • @Musicenthusiasm

They sound equally proficient in both environments. Please don't take me the wrong way, I love Jaco! He is THE innovator for solo bassists!

  • @saxmanrh

Please visit my channel and listen to some of the rare, live performances I've posted of Jaco. Some of those solos are at a very respectable level! I do admit that there are more advanced improvisers in terms of soloing, but keep in mind that coming up with a bass-line is also improvising, and In Jaco's case at a very high level. In my opinion no one could or can touch Jaco as an accompanist. Just listen to his bass-line on "In France They Kiss On Main Street" for instance.

  • iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii :*:*:*:*:*:*

  • Black people are rhythmic culturally but that doesn't make them rhythmic individually. I know some VERY unfunky black people, some of them musicians, some of them even play in groove-based musical idioms - and they suck. Cookin musicians are hot because the listen intently, they immerse themselves in the culture of their music and they play A LOT. Many great musicians come from the Church and the reason their pocket is sick is cause they played Gospel 50 ways from Sunday, every Sunday.

  • Comment removed

  • @Mushroom Disorder I have never heard a truer statement in my life.

  • Sounds great in slap, I'm suprised

  • Nice, but no cigar. As a musician, I know the difference between jiving (which Miller ALMOST is doing) and the real deal.

Playing this slap style is OK, and Miller does it real well. But Jaco man, he did this with FINGERS and it was funkier, rounder-sounding and more driving. Harder than hell, too! Slap is one thing, but fingers? That's the sound.

Again, Miller is great and does a nice rendition, but it all begins and ends with Jaco.

  • @mattleemattlee123 slap is OK? are you high? its one of the heaviest tools a bassist has, and Miller is one of the most identify able slap players around, if you ask me the two versions are on par.

  • @ahvaimusicom On slap: Slap is over as a dominant style, but if you're like Marcus, Larry Graham, or Les Claypool (that is you've brought something new to the table) you have cart blanche to splank because it's integral to your unique expression - and lead their own bands so the music suits it. Wooten is a master technician, and occasionally very musical, but more often he get's carried away in the spectacle, which I wonder if he even enjoys anymore.

  • Check out my Pastorius-like ´Funky Cat´ bassgroove @ the video response bar!

  • omg his bass sounds rididcilous

  • Oh my sweet baby Jesus, this sounds so fucking sexy

  • Pointless

  • Muy chingon! Esta muy fino esto!

  • de emocionar!

  • This is a great version of this song.

  • Many people who left the comments know nothing about the music ant that is a fact.

  • this song is too hard to play by finger... but in slap! omg! simply great!

  • Comment removed

  • Marcus Miller is great, but the band pales in comparison to Weather Report. What is that- Ron Holloway playing sax? yeech.

  • ill always prefer the origional, but damn can this guy slap. every note so clear and he captures the song perfectly in his own way!

  • Oh hell yeah.

  • All you people who say that Marcus is spoiling the song, well, the original sounds better, and maybe the slap style doesn't quite suit this song. But give the man credit for playing such a bass masterpiece with slap and still hitting all the notes clearly and with passion.

  • @taufoofar

Absolutely well put, just what I was thinking!

  • i kinda like original better...and were dong this song for or jazz ensemble class

  • @Niia090 bassist must kickass or get a simplified part?
