I feel that creating this world in which android are stereotyped is drawing more of a parallel to that people, in general, are stereotyped, not just black people.
I think she's using a character like Cindi Mayweather to draw on that people who are discriminated against, for whatever reason, feel like their humanity is devalued as a result. If so, then it's a very intelligent way of communicating something deep through popular culture and I applaud her for it.

Janelle is by far the best breakout pop musician in the last few years. She's scary-talented, mad sexy, intellectual, creative, and a f*cking awesome dancer with a positive message to boot. And it takes a lot to make it in this industry without big corporate backing so she is very intelligent. This cute little girl is H-O-T and F-R-E-S-H and is Going Far! If you don't like her you're eating too many beans and chile and need Beano. She's a beauty, has a great voice and has a style that sets her apart from the tired hip/hop/rap crap about skanky hos, bitches, money, bling and cars that we've been flooded with the past several years. This girl is a classic and will surpass Badu and Whitney and Mariah.
I love her comic book approach to music. Listening to her albums is like watching a movie. Every song has a story that connects to each one she sings.

Janelle's' underrated because not nearly enough people know about her and her talent (though I hope that'll change in the very near future). I think you've made an interesting point, but I think Lady Gaga and others have proven that if the music quality is there, fans will easily warm up to detailed and thought-out concepts behind the artist. Its not just me that doesn't know about cindi. I've talked to a bunch of people who feel the same way and I have read comments on youtube about it too. There doesn't seem to be a clear story arc of whats happening to this cindi character apart from the few songs that she has released so far but yet the way she talks about her its like we have been following the character for years. Is there a song that really lets us know who she is? is there a website?
I still don't think bad boy are promoting her or her story well enough and I would personally prefer her to make a normal full length albums rather than these short concept based EPs.

love james brown so luving her soul/style but I'm not really feeling the self importance Janelle Monae is attatching to herself..In some recent interviews it seems her ego is inflating and she looks down to certain people as if she is the most important artist to exist right now..Be unique and break down barriers but don't have an egotistical personality and feel you are superior to others...I hope she don't turn out this way but I can see it ALREADY LOL..Not hating just stating what I feel

This cute little girl is H-O-T and F-R-E-S-H and is Going Far! If you don't like her you're eating too many beans and chile and need Beano. She's a beauty, has a great voice and has a style that sets her apart from the tired hip/hop/rap crap about skanky hos, bitches, money, bling and cars that we've been flooded with the past several years. I am fairly new to Janelle, but I feel I've taken to her in much the same way that I took to Lady Gaga: They're both powerful antidotes for how predictable and vapid both music and celebrities have become. I look forward to this new album (as well as more videos) and looking into her previous album.

@yesveronica I dunno. I think they're both underrated, but in different ways. Janelle's' underrated because not nearly enough people know about her and her talent (though I hope that'll change in the very near future). And Gaga's underrated because people just think she does catchy dance music and wears weird outfits without actually hearing her live and knowing all the effort she puts into her career.

Hey! This kinda makes me think of KId Cudi and other artists who don't get their props and promotions here in the U.S.A. Then someone else comes out with a sound similar to theirs (cause they heard the sounds and too note. hummmm) and that artists gets all kinds of praises for the new sounds.......yeah, ok. I went to see her this month, and was blown away by what she delivered... I love that she has a complete concept to her craft, and is not just singing what someone may have just given to her. I cannot wait to here what the album will be like, and I can't wait until she comes back to my city I will definitely be there for sure. Janelle is an amazing artist in my book. LOVE HER!

I think you've made an interesting point, but I think Lady Gaga and others have proven that if the music quality is there, fans will easily warm up to detailed and thought-out concepts behind the artist. I have no doubt Janelle can pull that off, though it's all definitely quite eccentric. It is, however, refreshing, and I think labels are FINALLY realizing that it pays off when all your artists aren't bubble gum pop machines. Here's to May's release of the Arch Android!

Well "accentric" isn't a word, so I'm not sure what you mean by that. Yes, of course sex sells, but Lady Gaga isn't traditionally beautiful. Her songs are so popular, that sex can't possibly explain it all. She does, however, have a very eccentric concept behind her image that fans connect to, and I think that has much more to do with her popularity as an artist.

@ladyheiress What is with this stigma attached to pop music? There is nothing wrong with pop music. There is, however, something wrong with bad pop music. Your critique makes absolutely no sense. It's pretty clear Lady Gaga isn't trying to sell sex. She sells creativity and individuality. Her act isn't sexual, it's not flirty. It's actually quite the opposite. People seem to have this overwhelming sense of anger towards artists who are successful, no matter what they do or stand for.

as a fan of Janelle, I agree with @ thegov08 - I LOVE ART and Janelle is a big sis. BUT there has been NO NO NO great promotion of Janelle or CINDI. If Jane would just do a VERY GREAT ALBUM with no gimmicy characters and slowly bring Cindi to the light it WILL TAKE OFF!!!! Look at Andre 3000! He can do whatever the hell he wants to do now. But it took time and VERY well planned out thought. I've seen janelle perform at church... SHE IS A BEAST. I just think more marketing prep should happen.

@thewonkachild if you're calling Cindy's story a gimmick, you might as well be calling Tommy and Quadrophenia or gimmick albums as well. yes some things are a little vague, but at least wait until the whole story gets told before you dismiss it! I don't know about you, but I fully expect at least 2 music videos furthering the plot of Metropolis along and I am right there for the ride. Janelle is a true artist and I have full faith she'll have (and already HAS had) something fantastic to say.

TRUST ME, I HAVE FAITH IN HER... not the label (bad boy). If she is a gimmic, then I am (Wonkachild). Hence "Wonka." I am an illustrator, author and GET the whole story more than you know... but as far as marketing and product - just depends on how and where she wants to go.

I have her first album (the audition) BANANAS... she vocally challenges Lauren Hill on that!!!!! Janelle MIND, CREATIVITY, TALENT, and conceptualization methods are enough to GET THE WHOLE WORLD BANGIN! She inspired me to have no fear with my music... BUTTTTTTTTTTTT. I think, and this is my opinon... that it should maybe be a bit more paced, easing shallow minds into the CRAZY world of Metropolis. If not, you COULD run the risk of being a gimmic.

BTW @hyoko99 THIS WHOLE DIALOG has been about 'substance'... not imagery. That was my whole point. "THE SUBSTANCE OF THE RAW GIFT THAT 'JANELLE' has is SO universal that she could switch it up to being an underground vampire if she wanted to and still make massive hits. Janelle is like CLAY, and Cindi is a mold. The clay can fit into ANY MOLD whereas the mold is always the mold. I was saying to heavily promote the clay first so that many many molds can be showcased. And that is what she is doing

Because you are only as good as the last thing you've done and when small minds place what you've presented in a box, they keep you there. The pattern that i've seen with artist who've changed the game: You know the stage, learn the game, KNOW the game... then bring it all to it's knees once you've played your cards. janelle will do it. @thewonkachild ah, well I think what I'm seeing is that the Metropolis story isn't really putting Janelle herself in the backseat. She IS marketing herself as Janelle Monae and not Cindi Mayweather, you know what I mean? I don't think she's really hitting you over the head with the story, but it is there, and if you can let yourself buy into it, all the more reason to enjoy the album. Beyond that, I think the care she's putting into crafting the story should be enough to avoid being a gimmick.

It's one thing to not understand something, it's another to dismiss it and say it has no value in defense. Not knowing isn't so bad, Gov. Its not just me that doesn't know about cindi. I've talked to a bunch of people who feel the same way and I have read comments on youtube about it too. There doesn't seem to be a clear story arc of whats happening to this cindi character apart from the few songs that she has released so far but yet the way she talks about her its like we have been following the character for years. Is there a song that really lets us know who she is? is there a website?

1) if you go on her myspace there is an interlude called the chase it talks about the concept and cindi
2) There a song called Cindi, there also a song called metropolis that explains cindi living situtation and etc.
