Some years ago, when I approached to metal, Iron Maiden was my favourite band. Then Jethro Tull became my favourite band. When I first heard this cover I knew there was something ;)
I think the Irons are a lot influenced by prog bands, Genesis above all. I love this cover.
In case you didn't know..This version of the Jethro Tull classic Cross Eyed Mary, was released in 1986 on a Japanease IMORT LP called ACE'S HIGH,with IRON MAIDEN on the cover written in Camouflage and evry othe word on the LP Jacket was written in Japanease..I used to own a copy but it was stolen....Damn it! Love this song and MAIDEN!!! I have some great Maiden Memorobilia I'm trying to put to a good home if your interested???PM me I'll give you details..
@skullcrusher94 Limited - yes, but I don't know how many are left. And you can call yourself pretty lucky cause they're indeed rare!
Maiden have produced 3 box sets:
1. Eddie's Archive
2. Eddie's Head (contains 15 CDs - each CD is an album they've released from 1980 - 1993.)
3. The First Ten Years (consists of 10 parts. Chronologically, each part is from certain period. eg. Part IV - TNOTB sessions, Part V - POM sessions. Each part contains some studio & live songs from that session.)
Besides the elf version, Dickinson has proven again that he can cover any tune and even surpass all expectations. Dio and Dickinson rule !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the old days of singles, the song you were "pushing" was considered the A side. Bands usually slapped another tune on the B-side that was either an album cut or later in the eighties you found bands putting covers on the B side. These were for vinyl singles, lp singles, picture discs,or as BMR666 said, a cassette single. See all the cool stuff you missed out on? This was origionally the B side to the Flight of Icarus single, I do believe.
Mr Pedantic says that a cassette tape didn't have two sides. You play side one and it reads the top half of the tape, side two reads the bottom half...
@blackmetalrules999 Yes the magnetic tape cassettes have A sides and B sides and I do remember them all to well. But this is not what the B-side here is referring to. When you release a record you often do plenty more songs than is released, the best songs are actually put on the record and are called A-side songs, what is put in limbo is called B-side songs. Iron Maiden have made enough B-side songs to make a super album by picking the cream of their B-side songs. Covers often become B-side's.
The other members of Iron Maiden were probably thinking when they recorded this in the studio together, 'Why the f**k did I let Bruce talk me into doing this lame cover version? I know he's really into Jethro Tull and all, but jeez..."
@Janick666Gers B-side is lingo from the days when singles were released as 45 rpm records (ie vinyl). A-side would be the main track being released, and since it has a reverse side (i.e. B side), a secondary track would be chosen to go along with the main track (i.e the A side).
I preffer the original version by far. Also this song was made from Ian Anderson to Ian Anderson, and any other singer can't do it the good as Ian can do, because HE IS JETHRO TULL. And it must be said, this song wotihout flute loses a big lot of cuality, the flute is Sacred in Jethro Tull, the electri guitars are not enough, the flute is necesary
cool how they substituted guitars for the flute riffs in the begining...flutes are so fucking gay anyway....except the ones in stairway to heaven there was this one time in band camp
With all due respect to Maiden, their is just no comparison to Tull. Listen to the version on Tull's live album "Bursting Out" from 1978 to hear the definitive version of this song, IMO. Check out the intricate play between the flute, guitar, keyboards and drums. The songs starts out subtle and build to a complete climax. And notice the "space" between the notes in the main riff. Stellar musicianship there.
Although I am not a Jethro Tull fan, I love Ronnie James Dio and Metallica all which I heard their versions of this song. I am convinced that this one by Iron Maiden is the best!

What do you mean, now Maiden doing Jethro Tull? If you knew anything about Maiden you'd know that Steve Harris was influenced by prog rock such as Wishbone Ash and Jethro Tull from the late 60s and early 70s. Also, this song was released as the B side of the Trooper.....almost 27 years ago...so your use of the word "Now" is a little strange
Yes because I just NOW have seen this for the first time, I have always liked both of them, but some how I have missed this!! Yes. so for the first time NOW, I am seeing this. So critical, I had to respond, sorry iam not the expert you are..
this is nothing like the original, i love that, most covers always have to much imitation but this was great, plus tull and maiden are two of my favourite bands, piece of mind is in my opinion the best maiden album

Wow 'whitewarrior251' are you serious!? "Jethro Tull is for people who spend half the week in their shed at the bottom of a garden"! And Iron Maiden covered their song so they must like Tull, therefor they spend half their week at the bottom of a garden!? God why don't you just think for one fucking second!
@whitewarrior251 Wow. You are beyond any potential degree of idiot that I have ever imagined... or exists, as a matter of fact. You have obviously have never listened to a whole lot of Jethro Tull. Bruce and Steve would backhand your sorry ass for saying that. Tull has been beyond brilliant over the years, comparable to Maiden, and beat Metallica. You are as thick as a brick.
Lmfao, people still like Metallica and Iron maiden? Go watch Ozzy Osbourne suck a bats cock, then reevaluate your life and listen to real music you pathetic neckbeard cuntrags. Feel free to reply to this, but I'm sure many of you won't be able to because your massive baloney tits inside your comic book shirt will be in the way of your arms.

@skullcrusher94 Do you mean how many Eddie's Archive box sets? or how many records does the box set contain?
There is only 1 Eddie's Archive. Featuring:
1. The BBC Archives (4 Maiden concerts. Of which 2 with Di'Anno. It also contains one concert with Doug Sampson on drums).
2. Beast Over Hammersmith (1982 Hammersmith performance)
3. Best Of The B-Sides (almost all B-sides Maiden released on singles. The tracklist is listed chronologically).

Wow 'whitewarrior251' are you serious!? "Jethro Tull is for people who spend half the week in their shed at the bottom of a garden"! And Iron Maiden covered their song so they must like Tull, therefor they spend half their week at the bottom of a garden!? God why don't you just think for one fucking second!

omg who said that,, cause, Jethro Tull was one of Steve Harris's biggest influences.
