My grandmother took me to see Flower Drum Song when I was about seven years old. When I saw this scene with Nancy Kwan, I realized that I very much enjoyed being a boy. It took me a few years to figure out why. Ms Kwan made a very big impression on me. No cooties on her.
@BBpoipoi I can't help giggling at that. I first saw FDS at about that age as well and not only did it serve as an early clue that I was NOT supposed to be a boy, it sparked my lifelong passion for acting, singing, dancing and musicals! Then when I saw Ann Margaret singing "How Lovely to be a Woman" in Bye Bye Birdie I could not wait to get the hell out of my male body! The next week I faked a weight trng accident and injury that got me excused from PE and refused to ever again get a haircut
I love how campy this song is! Pretty much about how wonderful it is to be a pretty girl lol How it puts me in the mood when I'm getting ready to go out.
FYI, this is not the original version of this song. Flower Drum Song was written for the stage. It premiered on Broadway in 1958. "I Enjoy Being a Girl" was introduced by Pat Suzuki in the role of Linda Low. The original cast recording of the 1958 production is still available. Of course, there is no film of the original Broadway production.
Try being a girl when you're on your period, when a guy says something perverted to you, when you have to deal with the typical, negative stereotypes surrounding women, or when you have to push eight pounds - give or take - out of your vagina. Lmao, it's times like those when I actually really hate being a girl.
@GeorgeLRockwell87 Not true, lots of Asian women happily married to blacks (and lots of Asian men not neccesarily happily married to Asian women...) Racial disharmony affects everybody, not just any one group.
@GeorgeLRockwell87 I'm half Black and half Asian. My mom's Japanese and my dad's black. I know plenty of other Blasian people. Race has nothing to do with love, love has no race or gender.
I am an avidly indulgent transvestite and this vid is number five on my "Music to Crossdress to" playlist! Right along with "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story, "How Lovely to be a Woman" from Bye Bye Birdie, "Femininity" from Summer Magic, "I am Just a Girl" by Abba, and many other girlishly delightful gems that make me run like a girl to my trove of makeup, lingerie and other pretty, frilly, sparkly things as I visibly quiver like an intoxicated Amish schoolgirl in a Fredricks of Hollywood!
At jr high honors assembly, dresses are back, and they're about the same length as they were in 1970. Poofy dresses are new. But back then the teachers wore the same length outfits as the students.
At jr high honors assembly, dresses are back, and they're about the same length as they were in the 70s when I was in school. Poofy dresses are new. But back then the teachers wore the same length outfits as the students.
For some reason I was censored. All I said was; wow this was so wrong ten years later, and how any of us who acted like that ten years later were seriously ridiculed. Be glad, be very glad, if you missed the Women's Liberation Movement in the U.S. I remember being personally told by a libber that I should stop shaving my legs because I looked too "sexy" with my legs shaved.
Good God, I thought this kind of thing was made illegal in 1972 when I was 12.
Let me tell you what, the feminists around us in the '70's made sure no one BUT the transvestites were thinking like that.
Girls acting/dressing/feeling like that ever since have been called SPOILED, or ENTITLED. I surely get a load of trouble from my MIL , FIL and DH for the least bit of feminine indulgence. In fact, what am I doing here right now when I should be toting that barge and lifting that bale?
@ThePhantomBlonde A damn shame they didn't sign up Pat Suzuki, but Baker had better hollywood connections, which is also the reason they picked Kwan who was a rising star in the 60's bombshell wars. Asians don't have anybody to compete with the likes of Gaga or Madonna today, though we just got a Tiger mama from hell.
@klabkebash Yes, James Shigeta, ibdb: Hawaiian-born James Shigeta was for a time the biggest Asian-American star the country had known for decades. ...culminating in his most important one, the lead in Ross Hunter's glitzy production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical Flower Drum Song (1961). Supporting parts followed, .. His status as the foremost Asian leading man of 20th century American film will endure undiminished by an erratic career.
My grandmother told me that when this movie first came out, this particular song was considered controversial. Because many women called it "sexist". I'd really like to read what some of today's women think about this song.
@cyberjoshy I still would say this song is sexist, because it emphasizes enjoyment of ones own looks. What happens to this "girl" in ten years when she isn't the prettiest young thing anymore? True this is one girl, and she plans on getting a guy with her looks, for a stability, but really, we are more than that. I am only judging the song for itself, I don't know anything else about the musical, so perhaps she is a wonderfully generous, educated woman, but that is all I see.
@itbevee "sexist" is SOOO late 60s and early 70s. This was set in the late 50s, which is really the late late 40s. Her character is the antithesis of the virginal "china girl" immigrant who stows away illegally, but the song has transcended its original Asian American backstory.
@itbevee it's the 50s what do you expect? Don't go all feminist, I'm a girl to but I am doing the play in a few months, she likes being a girl, It's not that bad to like being pretty, whether you like being whistled at that's your think, I don't like it either :)
@itbevee of course it was sexist it was written in 1958 and went to flim in 1960. ALL women were expected to give everything up to marry and have babies.
@sanriochica333 Flower Drum song was based on an actual night club called Forbidden City which was a showcase for Asian American talent. Asians were actually MORE prominent on American TV and movies in the 1950s and 1960s than now, perhaps because of the influx of immigrants who were more interested in other things than show biz, and a civil rights era ethic that frowned on the very ethnic stereotypes that helped to sell Asian parts.
@Hoopermazing If Janet Reno wore more makeup, I don't think she would have burned to death those moms and babies at Waco. Lipstick lesbians outnumber the butch variety due to this song.
Wow! :D This is totally awesome! :D I love this kind of song. I post videos of me singing to my Channel... Maybe I should make a video of me singing this song! Think I could pull it off..?
she still does "oriental beauty" commercials on TV.... No asian / am women in a comparable position today, but with all the trouble young starlets getting into today maybe not such a bad thing...
Too true, and one of the lines at the end REALLY makes me rage:
"When I hear the complimentary whistle/that greets my bikini by the sea/I turn and I glower and I bristle/but I'm happy to know the whistle's meant for me"
GODFUCKINGDAMMIT. THIS IS WHAT GROPERS AND PERVERTS AND LECHERS *THINK* YOU'RE THINKING. WHAT THE SHIT.
Halfway into the song the guy, punctual like most, is already waiting at the door and looking at his watch, wondering what takes all women so long to get dressed to go out.
I chose this song to sing in a concert recently, and I had a lot of fun with it. I picked this song because I forgot how bad the original recording was. What a shame; it's a good song, and it was written by good people.

@SmileyFace4646 Well, you've got a point about API = Asian Pacific Islander, but Asian American usually means Chinese or Japanese. The only caucasian in Flower Drum Song is the mugger.
If she is singing about how much shelike wering dresses, why is it at 2:45 seconds into the video she takes her dress or the stool and trow it across the room? Why not pick it up and place it somewhere else??? Bob

The original was recorded by Pat Suzuki from the broadway show then B.J. Baker did the song for the movie ^^

I love this song, but I had never seen this version of it LOL! It's really good. Is this movie good because I saw it somewhere for like 7 dollars?

yes, it's a very good movie (I liked it because it's the first and only popular movie and rogers hammerstein musical about Asian Americans)

@biukucanoe i could be wrong but what about south pacific?
SmileyFace4646 1 year ago
@SmileyFace4646 Well, you've got a point about API = Asian Pacific Islander, but Asian American usually means Chinese or Japanese. The only caucasian in Flower Drum Song is the mugger.

If she is singing about how much shelike wering dresses, why is it at 2:45 seconds into the video she takes her dress or the stool and trow it across the room? Why not pick it up and place it somewhere else??? Bob
