I have been a Van Halen fan since day one and will always be. That being said, this is not a poor performance at all. Of course it is not going to sound like Van Halen. To be honest, I have seen live Van Halen shows that didn't sound very well for whatever reason. I am not a John Mayer fan, but I respect the fact that He even chose to do a VH tune. ROCK ON!!!

They are NOT "just playing around." They are making money from playing the song during the concert. Playing EVH is a VERY touchy thing to do. It's not like playing any old song and just doing YOUR version of it. I'm NOT saying that it sacred or whatever. It's like trying to build a Lamborghini and saying I'm going to do my own thing and put a 4 cylinder engine in there because it's the way I want to make it. It's just stupid. Don't do EVH unless you can really rock the livin' shit out of it.

To be honest, even I can play this better. But I agree they are just playing around and it doesn't matter, but that explain this fact. The intro John plays, he's not playing the full chords that he could've easily used. The way he plays it, he is skipping the snares that deliver the bass sound, which you can also hear. Why he does this? I don't know. John is more than capable of doing so. Again, I believe they are just fooling around.

The best thing that could happen here is that everyt ime John butchers this classic VH song, a really drunk Eddie Van Halen comes out on stage and barfs on him, and then shows him how it is really played.

Furthermore, Eddie and his guitar stylings haven't been musically relevant in almost 20 years.

Buddy...John Mayer's resume speaks for itself: He attended Berkley for a year, he writes hit songs, continually gets asked to play with the worlds most famous musicians while in his spare time, he bangs some of the hottest broads on the planet.
I'm sure the Eddie is flattered that such a great musician is paying homage to him. AND I'm absolutely certain that "Eddie" himself couldn't sing AND play John's tunes.

Plus, in a sound check, your monitor levels aren't properly set yet. The whole point of a sound check is to.. CHECK the SOUND. So if it sounds terrible, it's supposed to be tuned up by the sound guys.

every live vid i've ever seen of DMB, dave's vocals were nowhere near album quality and his songs just dont impress me...everytime i see John live, he's getting better and better...he's just a more thorough musician to me. maybe not "better", but deff more thorough when it comes to live performance. as a bass player, i'd much rather play behind mayer than dave, simply because john's a much more steady in his performance.

Ask any REAL guitarist, and EVH is just as relevant as hendrix, vai, satch, SRV, etc... they all had their place in the evolution... we wouldnt be where we are today without them, so therefor they are all RELEVANT.

Buddy...John Mayer's resume speaks for itself: He attended Berkley for a year, he writes hit songs, continually gets asked to play with the worlds most famous musicians while in his spare time, he bangs some of the hottest broads on the planet.
I'm sure the Eddie is flattered that such a great musician is paying homage to him. AND I'm absolutely certain that "Eddie" himself couldn't sing AND play John's tunes.
Eddie's great, but John really is more of a well rounded musician.

I don't really care whether or not you like John Mayer. I won't try to convince you.
You can argue and insult me all you want, but at the end of the day, J.M. plays duets with John Schofield and Eric Clapton (and many other of the "GREATS"...). He plays in trio with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan.
J.M. does a lot of cool things on the guitar that EVH wannabees often overlook, or ignore.

Whenever people start using words like "dickhead" and "asshole", it usually means that they've lost the argument...and they know it...
You need to get over the fact that most people aren't experts in music. They want just a nice melody/hook that they can sing along with. There's nothing wrong with that.
Guitar jocks often seem to lost in solos, notes, scales, modes and riffs. You need to learn to make music (songs) for people, not just for other guitarists.

You've got it backwards...Radio only responds to what most people WANT to hear.
Again, whether you like it, or not, guitar parts/solos are secondary. VOCALS (a good chorus...aka "PAN-A-MA...") usually are what make music famous.

Plus, in a sound check, your monitor levels aren't properly set yet. The whole point of a sound check is to.. CHECK the SOUND. So if it sounds terrible, it's supposed to be tuned up by the sound guys.

every live vid i've ever seen of DMB, dave's vocals were nowhere near album quality and his songs just dont impress me...everytime i see John live, he's getting better and better...he's just a more thorough musician to me. maybe not "better", but deff more thorough when it comes to live performance. as a bass player, i'd much rather play behind mayer than dave, simply because john's a much more steady in his performance.

you are so wrong...John Mayer is actually a pretty soft spoken likable personality.......the reason why people with musical taste don't care for his music, is that he's EXTREMELY unoriginal....his style is a complete rip off of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Dave Mathews...and he plays too many covers that sound like the original artist (SRV, Jimi, EVH) instead of putting his own style to it....but of course it all makes sense since Mayer has no original sound, thus he can't play a cover in a unique way.

exactly.......Dave Matthews is a way better original sounding songwriter and performer than Mayer.........Mayer might have a bit better guitar skills, but overall Matthews music is much higher quality than Mayers thin sounding pop rock stuff.

Well, 'that guy' is actually David Ryan Harris, he does some backgroundvocals normally and is also a solo-artist. Don't know if they did this song later that day at the real concert, but they did it an other time at a show. (posted by bobsta, it's in the related videoslist here)
