The girls white dresses symbolize St. Lucias wedding dress as she where to marry a pagan, but refused and had her dowry distributed to the poor. Her would-be husband denounced her as a Christian and she was killed. Prior to her execution her eyes where gouged out. St. Lucia is celebrated in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, Finland, Malta, Italy, Bosnia, Iceland, Croatia and the some parts of the United States with Scandinavian roots. Saint Lucia, also known as Saint Lucy. Her feast day is 13 December, the longest night of the year; with a name derived from lux, lucis "light", she is the patron saint of those who are blind. In Scandinavian countries, young girls dress as the saint in honor of the feast. The procession is headed by one girl wearing a crown of candles (the bride), while others in the procession hold only a single candle each.

I used to dress up as Santa Lucia all the time when I was little on Christmas...but the dres no longer fits me! hehe I love the story however =]

yes i only know part of the story but its very amazing...though my name is Irish...spending a lot of time with my grandparents makes me feel a whole lot of sweidish and italian! especially swedish becuase of my grandma!

I'm Danish and to tell the truth I didn't know the story about Santa Lucia until I looked her up at the internet (that's a week ago or so) because I wanted to know some more. Ididn't know that she was the patron for the blind, but I did know that she first apeared in Sweden as "the angel of light"...

What I really wanna say is that I love this song and I'd wish that they'll do this song next year in stead of the usual
