Ilistened to this so many times as a kid , I never thought it would be on the internet, now I can share this with my kids like4 my Dad did with my brother and I, Awsome.
My 8th grade history teacher used to play this cd every single goddamn day while we did our assignments! I still love it though and I listen to it at least once a year :)
I first discovered this on New Year while litsening to SCU Classical Music station, I find quite amusing, when I saw it was a vinyl record it reminded me of my godparents.
About 1981, when I was ten years old, I attended a marionette show at the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace in Staunton, VA. (It was held in the Visitor's Center Museum next door to the house where W.W. was born.)
The marionette show used Stan Freberg's "United States" album as its soundtrack. The first segment had marionettes of Columbus, Ferdinand, Isabella, and the Indian. It was done on a marionette stage like the one in "Sound of Music." I laughed at the "Columbus Day" and "French horns" jokes.
Kyroshruko, Columbus was actually played by Freeberg.
arpeggio1358, I agree that "Take and Indian to Lunch" was a great satire on the why Europeans disregarded the Native Americans. It also exposed the tokenism rampant in American race relations at the time.
He was actually ahead of his time -- Saturday Night Live would take political comedy to new level after satirists like him had blazed the trail.

What can I say? Stan Freberg was a genius! The satire is incredibly brilliant. I used to listen to this album over and over again. Thank you for posting it!
I wish "Take an Indian to Lunch" (from this album) was on YouTube. Stan Freeberg was P.C. and had it right regarding the wonderful Native Americans way back in 1961, when this album debuted. It was their country first, and Freeberg showed it with satire and appropriate barbs at the Europeans who came here and showed little regard for the Native Americans. RMphy89, thank you for posting this excerpt. Any chance we'll get more?
Thanks to our dad we also grew up with Stan. Would anyone like to post that bit with 'Gaza Strip' and the show, 'the Atomic Bomb' -- was that the same one with "being lost at-pool"?
My four brothers, two sisters and I also grew up with "Stan", thanks to our Dad. Like most everyone else here, we interject some of "Stan's American-isms" into conversations with each other, especially at family reunions. Can't stop the laughing with Stan!
I was watching a Devils/Islanders game on TV a couple of years ago and the announcer said something about hostility in the corners, to which the color-commentator chimed in with the entire "we're all a little hostile...other can't adjust" line...I cracked up and people looked at me weird.
Thanks for posting this - Stan is the greatest - - stupid injuns -they didn't discover columbus - they weren't gutsy enough to sail across the sea - progress - good food - great spanish & italian restaurants only possible in America
country property - white man's here, it's time to leave
Are you talking about the first line after the music at 6:50? That's King Ferdinand saying to Columbus, "Alright, go ahead, give the kid top billing." Meaning that Columbus can name Queen Isabella first when planting the flag: "I claim this land in the name of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain!"
I used to listen to this over and over when I was a kid. They dont make comedy like this anymore. its been ages since I heard it.Thank you so much for posting it.
