@stoneybelford Its a great song, as i get depressed, but there is a line that says "i want to take my life but i wont, to be a coward, give me a ride back home" actually probably saved my own life, this is why i love john so much, his music, and the fact hes so fucking hot!
You can't hear anything good on the radio except the same 20 fricking songs over and over. Sirius conspiracy theory. Haven't turned on my radio in two months. Great song anyway.
The meaning of the hearse is you know when most people pass away the Hearse takes the casket to the graveyard for burial .That hearse is their (ride back home).I love this video.I listen to it every day.

I heard JM talk about how hard it is for older artists to get radio play... not to mention the fact that computers run radio stations nowadays through Selector and otherr programs. (some of the younger people have never heard of carts or rotations) It ain't what it used to be and the pay is about the same really... still low!! All i got here is a rearview mirror.. but I'll add this song to the computer on one of the stations i work for!! i can't garauntee airplay except when i'm there!!
@RecklessAbandoner Well said, my friend. What you just wrote is the very reason I had left a successful radio career in East Tennessee. No more carts, no more playing stuff you had your hands on, and most importantly, no more interaction with the listeners and fans. I hung up my on-air programming shoes - with regret and pain, but with some pride. Thank you!
"Hey Jesus, can you give me a ride back home?" "Now it's starting to get to me, all all this inhumanity" "My time's come and gone, it's as simple as that."
Im 45 . I've loved John Mellencamp back when he was John Cougar. This song is moving and beautifully painfull. This is what it's all about but I have a little problem with what I belive to be a harsh abundance of base in the background of the music. I thought my speakers gave out. Is it just me or does anyone else hear it too?
I have been a fan of Johns since MY first albums American fool & "the Kid Inside" and to me this is one of his best songs. I like a few others , want it played at my wake as well. very touching indeed...thank you John, for this wonderful heart felt song.

This is one of the best songs I have ever heard. Makes me tear up. Had I heard it prior it would have been played at my brothers memorial. He died in an accident at 50 on Christmas Eve/Day 8 years ago. He would have loved it.
my first record when i was a kid was John Cougars "Aint Even Done With The Night 45". To his new one that came out last month and everything in between.John thanks for the soundtrack to my life
I can only think of my grandpa listening to this song. I remember telling my grandpa that he could let go and go to heaven.
"I feel like takin my life but I wont, too big a coward. Can you give me a ride back home?" <<---- thats how I feel lately. I think sucide but I dont know f I would ever do it
I have to say this may be one of my all time favourite songs of John's. I am a big mellencamp fan and this is now one of my favourites!!! Very touching.
Have any of you noticed that it takes a music video sometimes, before you actually get the lyrics - I hadn't realized what he was singing about, until I saw him performing this: "... but it's gone now... and it ain't comin' back... my time's come and gone... it's as simple as that..." Neat. I didn't think much of this album when it was released - but now I love it. "Life, Death, Love, and Freedom" has really grown on me. I'm going to buy it for my sister.
i heard this song once before but never listen to it to closely but today i was missing my mom who died in 2008 and i cried all the way through the song i feel that way sometimes and i listed to john in the 80's and he is still good
Mellencamp never fails to write songs that transcend all genre's, all people, and touch the very essence of our deepest vulnerabilities, fears, desires, and hopes.... His lyrics are truth set to the most amazing music; His music is the very heart of the average American; loved him back in the day and love him more today....
I don't know what it is about John Mellencamp, but almost every song of his gives me the chills - in a good way. The songs from Life, Death, Love and Freedom kill me - all fantastic. From "Jack and Diane," which I never got growing up in NYC to "A Ride Back Home," his trajectory from simple pop songs to more layered, American roots has been lovely. Now living in MN for 15 years - I finally get "J&D" In NYC, no one sucks on a chili dog outside the Tastee Freeze. :)
Love Karen Fairchild and her group, Little Big Town!!! Great to see her teaming back up with the cougar. Not sure if i like this one or Sweet Love better though.
I can relate to this song on several levels..even the video. That road looks a lot like one I used to travel on to visit my parents in rural America. The cemetery is where they are buried. "Dear Jesus give me a ride back home".
Indiana is like other big states (well, okay medium), one side ain't like the rest. N is Gary, Terre Haute, etc. That ain't southern. Bloomington etc sure, that's kinda Southern. Duh.
My grandfather of whom I was very close to died very recently and I hadn't heard this song until my aunt suggested it for the funeral. When I heard it the first time I burst into tears. Then they played it at the funeral and I began to cry again. It is a sad but uplifting song which is why It is one of my favorites. Thanks John for singing this great song.

Very well done, it goes with the song quite well. Karen is great as usual and 3 generations of Mellencamps in the video. I could have done without THAT many shots of the hearse going down the road though. I'm glad John decided to make this one in color for a change not B&W like the rest of his last 10 videos.
This song is of a person in trouble and wants to end there life. It's depressing to me as it should be. It does have a nice tune though.

Very well done, it goes with the song quite well. Karen is great as usual and 3 generations of Mellencamps in the video. I could have done without THAT many shots of the hearse going down the road though. I'm glad John decided to make this one in color for a change not B&W like the rest of his last 10 videos.

who are the 3 mellencamps?

John's sons Speck and Hud, and his dad, Richard Mellencamp.

Love to see a video that isn't a fit of jump cuts and staccato images. Very nicely done.

No, Buffet is not anywhere on this track. Why would he be? You hear Karen Fairchild, who is featured in the video, singing on this track. That's all.

Do I hear JImmy Buffet singing backup on this one? :)
