I heard JM talk about how hard it is for older artists to get radio play... not to mention the fact that computers run radio stations nowadays through Selector and otherr programs. (some of the younger people have never heard of carts or rotations) It ain't what it used to be and the pay is about the same really... still low!! All i got here is a rearview mirror.. but I'll add this song to the computer on one of the stations i work for!! i can't garauntee airplay except when i'm there!!

Im 45 . I've loved John Mellencamp back when he was John Cougar. This song is moving and beautifully painfull. I don't know what it is about John Mellencamp, but almost every song of his gives me the chills - in a good way. The songs from Life, Death, Love and Freedom kill me - all fantastic. From "Jack and Diane," which I never got growing up in NYC to "A Ride Back Home," his trajectory from simple pop songs to more layered, American roots has been lovely. Now living in MN for 15 years - I finally get "J&D" In NYC, no one sucks on a chili dog outside the Tastee Freeze. :)

My grandfather of whom I was very close to died very recently and I hadn't heard this song until my aunt suggested it for the funeral. When I heard it the first time I burst into tears. Then they played it at the funeral and I began to cry again. It is a sad but uplifting song which is why It is one of my favorites. Thanks John for singing this great song.

I couldn't help lovin' that spirited duet. I think it's a lot of humour in it, but it's not ironical. I like the sequence of chords in the end. It descends like the life of human being in the last years. The expressionless musicians behind the singers emphasize the gravity of the human situation. But why is the audience as from the 19 th century ? There's a starting contrast between audience and the very fresh and modern appearance of Karen Fairchild. The video is made with taste. Good job.

Yeah, I have never understood the relentless Springsteen comparisons. To me these two artists are very distinct, to the extent that I own every single Mellencamp album but not one of Springsteen's.
