I was at he workshop tent with all of the performers wielding the hail away from the amps and whatnot. My aunt was in the big volunteer tent when it fell down. Her experience was a lot scarier than mine (since it wasn't scary at all, almost). Oh Falcon Ridge...
Yo.... wow, it is amazing to see. I was there and in the dance tent. It got dark and cold pretty quick and cleared up just as fast. thanks for addingthis!
the storm 4 me was so fckn scary... i was in the kids tent with my friends holding the tent... and since my parents own thai jasmine and so luckily nothing feel down... but after the storm i never got 2 c my friend nick:[
What we need is shirts that say "My Tent Survived Falcon Ridge 2008."
If we hadn't gotten our tent in the car before that thing hit, I don't think ours would have, we only pulled it up and packed it minutes before that squal hit. Our canopy and many other things were in it, only only survived because we were hanging on to them during the storm.
Of course, we'll be back. I NEVER want to go through something like that again... but, I will be back at the fest again next year. We start making plans for next years fest at this years fest. GREAT music, great like-minded people... can't think of anywhere else I'd want to be.
From what I have heard, Anne and the rest of the crew have been working hard at cleaning up. I think they are the greatest!!! The best news is no one was seriously hurt.
Whoo yeah, intense, huh? Mortal Beasts and Deities puppeteers were inside our costume/mask tent holding it down, still in costume.Good thing we hurried back to campsite after our noon show. Lost two Doves to the brown, muddy water that flooded in. All tents were in a swamp of the stuff. Awning tent grommets shredded and it came down on top of everything. We crammed masks and costumes into vehicles and raced for home to dry them out and try to salvage the papier mache heads. We will be back!
I am SO glad I didn't go this year. The storms are ridiculous every year. In 2005, a microburst hit the festival and 6 inches of water piled up in my tent. In 2006, it rained, and rained and rained.
Maybe having a music festival in July in a range of hills that squeezes the clouds out isnt the smartest idea in the world. The music sucks anyway, with maybe the exception of Eddie from Ohio, Dar, and some of the other regular A talent.
God didnt want to hurt us,he just wanted to clean us off a bit.Pete from the site crew here, The ropes on the site tent were freyed when put up, they snapped first. Food tents had broken or splits in the poles, both food tents had onep flaps, thats why they went down and well..the 70 to 80 mph winds. Joziaha and I both looked at eachother at the same time and yelled WOW!
OMG, I was THERE at the tent just before it collasped! I was helping Lynn shut down the kitchen. I was working on the salad bar, when everyone came in....then there was a hurricane like guest of wind and everyone was trying to keep the tent from collasping. Then two seconds later Nancy was yelling at EVERYONE to get out. It was straight out of the weather channel or Amazing Videos!
god this storm was awful. i was backstage during the terrible part right after Tracy Grammar got offstage. towards the end i was in my friends moms car. it doesnt even feel like falcon ridge is over bcuz we didnt sing the last song... :-( thx 4 da post!!!
Thanks for posting this. I was in the merchandise trailer during the hailstorm - not much anyone could do but wait it out. I'm glad nobody was hurt.....that staff kitchen tent collapsing is pretty amazing - I imagine it was terrifying in there.
I was scared to death during this storm. As soon as I saw lightning I went back to my popup camper! I watched tents flying by, the walls of my camper were bowing in and out, golf ball size hail. Scarey stuff.
I have to give you credit Tracy, I would have stopped long before you gave in. You're the best!
Whoa! If I hadn't had to leave around noon to get back for a wedding, I would've been in the middle of that. Thanks for the video -- I heard stories about it and read about it on the boards, but seeing is believing!
Holy hat, glad you got the vid guys! I was on the hill watching Tracy and couldn't let go of my umbrella to get my camera out for fear of it turning inside out like so many others did. Hope all made it out safe, what an ending! Sorry we missed the remaining acts that didn't get to perform!
Tracy Grammer here. I was playing on the main stage when this thing hit. The stage crew put the flaps down to secure the stage so none of us could really see what was really happening all around... we just *heard* it, and it sounded hellish. Thanks for giving us the visual!
We took the stage at 1:20. About 4 songs into the set lightning bolts were hitting the ridge... 1:45 or so. By the end of the sixth song -- "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", no less -- the rain had gone sideways and the wind started thrashing and the sound man called to end the set. I'd guess that was just before 2pm.
Hi Tracy, loved your set, just not the finally! :-)I think when you said that you were going to play the sing-a-long out of order so we would be sure to get it in the "Rain Gods and Murphy's Law" heard you! We were hunkered down under umbrellas waiting it out on the hill and then pummeled by quarter to golf ball sized hail (I have a bruise on my leg!) I hope everyone made it out safe, it was horendous to watch the tents going down and no way to help! This was our 10th year, but 1st time camping.
I think the battle scar from this festival is the hail-bruise. Not that you should have a battle scar from a folk festival. But lots of people left with bruises.
I'm singing "Gentle Arms of Eden" thinking, "This is anything but gentle!" And after the storm, our poor Eden was in shambles. But we'll do it all again next year, won't we? Of COURSE we will!
I believe you! The visual from the stage was really scary. Lightning bolts, the sideways rain, the temp drop and the wind changing direction so fast ... it just *felt* dangerous.
Tracy, that was a rath of god storm..glad we got the sides up fast, im on the site crew..can we get a song out of this one? maybe a duo with tom rush..lol
Credit where credit is due, Chuck and Oliver and myself set it this year, Mike and Mike designed it. If the tent people had shown up with our 2 foot front flap and the correct side drops you guys and gals would have been totally dry. Working fests for people like you are why we do it and enjoy it so much, heh heh, even better when something works..
It was so devastating to hear howard say the festival was closing early. We were walking down the hill when we heard the sound come back on (he was saying "test..."), and we got all excited-- thinking that things had cleared up, and the music would continue. But that was not the case.
But it made the 20th anniversary one that no one will forget, i suppose....
And definitely memorable to hear "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" with thunder grumbling in the background and lightning in the sky....

It's hard for me even to imagine worrying about rain in the summer. We just cancel things due to fire, instead.
