Producers have always had this weird notion that people will revolt if you give them something good. Bizarrely, they consider themselves to be in the business of making a profit on media, and yet they shy away from actually giving the public a better product for fear that, somehow, the public will tune out.
"But will it play in Peoria?" Of course it will, the audience will rise to whatever level you ask of them, and conversely, sink to whatever depths you expect of them.
Haha, I had to watch this one twice! The first time I couldn't concentrate on what David was saying because I was so busy trying to spot all the references.
fuckin advert, really, who decided that those who are watching David Mitchell's clever rants would also enjoy 'hanging out on google plus' (whatever that would mean) with David Beckham.
...Um...I'm 14 and I don't class myself as ignorant. However, I do class a lot of teenagers asignorant, mainly 'cause they don't seem interested in what teachers have to say at school, but it turns out they knew nothing previously about the subject.
...as a side note, I find school boring because everything they're teaching us in science right know I learned from The Magic School Bus, as a 5yr old.
References for me worked in a way that when I was younger, I completely ignored whatever I did not understand and continued to watch on the parts I do understand.
Then some years later I re-watch the same thing and find those references that I sub-conciously ignored.
Google? What's Google? Having no way of knowing what that is, I am am instantly antipathetic toward this video.
This reminds me of a Pinky and the Brain episode where the duo constructs a papier mache Earth. There was a repeated musical cue that was familiar to me, but I couldn't place it. Years later I recognized it as the final movement of Dvorak's 'New World' Symphony.
This can not be more accurate or true. I really dislike this era's screening of children. They banned Song of the South for crying out loud just because it was a film set in the south of America when there were slaves! Everything has a plastic feel to it now. It's sickening.
Awesome. I love how it makes lots of references to different things. Alice in Wonderland & E.T etc. DvslexicBibliophile2 below & others mentioned many more. The shadow on the wall is Nosferatu isn't it. Also Life of Brian on the wall there.

I think boring teenagers make boring adults to be honest.
I remember reading a world atlas for hours as a 6 year old, fascinated by the earth, countries, names of places etc.
As a teenager, despite being socially well connected, I was so busy in my own stuff I almost entirely forgot about girls. So I certainly wasn't typical, I had a group of 10 friends or so, and I hated their music.
What people also forget is that children's shows, at least the ones I know in the US, have often had lots of references adults understand so that the shows also appeal to parents. It's good when you can spot something as a reference but don't know what the reference is. Why? Because clearly the referrer likes it, you like the referrer's content, go find out something you're then likely to like.
so true - cartoons in my childhood were responsible for a lot of my general knowledge - they refer to things people don't generally talk about; philosophers, classical music, trivia etc
Very sound reasoning for entertainment... But in terms of conversation I find that some people are offended and turned off when they don't properly understand words, terms or concepts... t makes talking to those people quite a challenge.
i first learnt about post hoc ergo propter hoc from watching tim minchin, this didnt make me angry, i admired his ability to use a term only the 'nerds' knew but in a way which included everyone. if anything i admire him more for being intellegent because then at least i know by learning this i may one day be considered intellegent too

I loved the Asterix cartoons as a kid. They sparked a interest in history. Rewatching the cartoons as an adult I also notice many historical jokes and references that went over my head as a kid; like Brutus constantly fooling around with a knife and Caesar telling him that if he isn't careful he's going to stab someone.
David's got little to complain about, he's got the BBC. The Americans have got err.. fox news, known for their almost patronizing manner of using small, small words, no indirect references, and shit ton of pandering in order to never unintentionally ostracize anyone in the country.
Fortunately it backfires, because anyone with an ounce of self respect turns the shit off.
The shadow is a reference to Nosferatu. And the whole scene shown in the beginning is of course from Back to the Future.
I agree with him. References shouldn't be shied away from or else television and media would become redundant (the communication studies definition rather than 'loss of job' - look it up).
Back to the Futurama, Nosferatu, Alice in Wonderland...was that a reference to La Boheme I saw in the background?
I agree on using references. Maybe that's because I am writer who loves using them. Then again I also want to teach people something as well as entertain them.
As for learning from references - I became interested in Puccini after hearing it mentioned on Doctor Who.
I felt so superior because I had heard of proust before I saw the monty python sketch, then I remembered I hear of him from a reference made on gilmore girls...
He doesn't say that, why did you for some reason decide to say that to my comment when the entire comment board is talking about the meaning of these references, all this does is prevents people from having to google and it does not in anyway detract from the enjoyment of watching the video as it would had I quoted him..
No you did not clarify an opinion, stop trying to plead that now I'm offending you.
I simply stated a comment about one of the references on the video, you decided to have a go at me for that!
If you really gained less enjoyment out of a video for scrolling down into the comment section then future encounters like this could simply be prevented by you not scrolling down.
The only thing I dislike about David Mitchell is his overly pretentious fans, desperately trying to imitate is wit and sophistication in bloody youtube comments..
I was 20/21 when BBC3 did it's whole "hey, we're cool!" rebranding of itself, and not one teenager I knew liked the new BBC3, for the exact reason that it felt patronizing and forced.
unfortunately a lot of young people now have got accustomed to this "dont worry your little head about it.." behaviour and now when you talk about something even SLIGHTLY old they act like they've got no interest whatsoever, they prefer been spoon-fed knowledge to seeking it out, and I for one think its pretty sad
100% agree with everything you said. Actually, I don't just "agree", I know this to be the case. All through my childhood and then teenage years I as constantly learning about things from before my time through references on tv. It did make me seek out those things and the process was enjoyable! Other times if I didnt notice something was a reference, it made the moment I saw the actual thing even more enjoyable.
I was looking for a laugh but found an interesting sketch (?). This will influence my parenting. Great point of view, David. Want to make Superhands reference but unsure how...
My 15 year old brother doesn't know who Audrey Hepburn is, he doesn't understand ANY Monty Python references, he doesn't understand references I make to Star Trek, Star Wars, or any other sort of geekery, he doesn't understand music references…
I find this to be a problem. And this video totally nails that problem on the head.
References are a part of culture, and kids should DEFINITELY be introduced to them!
I love references. One of my favorite things is when I mention something that only one or two people know other than myself, and they love the fact that I used such an obscure or esoteric reference.
The Shining, Silence of the Lambs, Back to the Future, Sweeney Todd, La B Del M, Joni Mitchell, Mitchell bomber, Mt Mitchell, Pythagerus' Theorum, Alice In Wonderland, Life Of Brian, Nosferatu, ET,
Mind you I used to watch things like Tiny Toons and Animaniacs when I was a kid so maybe I should admit I'm being grumpy and am not into today's computer animated family films.
But the thing is nowadays kids films are stuffed with throwaway references to films they won't watch until they're much older (Godfather, Apocalypse Now etc), they say it's for the parents but to be honest I find it a bit irritating, smart-arsey and lazy. I mean, The Simpsons used to be very with good film references (back when it was good) but the average CGI kiddie flick isn't as witty.
Sorry if anyone else posted that. On another note, yes kids are more knowledgeable these days and they are more likely to actually seek truth rather than some wikipedia crap. These days kids watch QI :)
These days, teenagers work out the news is BS before most adults do. These are the teenagers on the alternative news sites like infowars, getting more facts than the average grown adult!
@turbodude555 Maybe 17-19 year olds but I don't think many 13 year olds watch politicians on the news and are able see through what they're saying before their parents.
Mrs Lovett's pie shop is a ref to Sweeney Todd and Brian Stokes Mitchell played in it... too far-fetched?

@mattcliffe1 Why would I purchase speakers for my laptop? :P
MrV902 9 months ago
@MrV902 Because your laptop's built-in speakers are clearly inadequate

a) David Mitchell is wondreful
b) I shouldn't have to sit through an ad (injected by YouTube) before a video that's been built bookended by an ad (for Bulldog)
rickadlib 9 months ago
The only thing I dislike about David Mitchell is his overly pretentious fans, desperately trying to imitate is wit and sophistication in bloody youtube comments..

What the hell is going on with the Moon? I can't make it out. Is it from one of the books of H. G. Wells?

@ThouTuber It's either ET, or it's the logo of a film producer that I can't remember at the moment.

E101ification 9 months ago
100% agree with everything you said. Actually, I don't just "agree", I know this to be the case. All through my childhood and then teenage years I as constantly learning about things from before my time through references on tv. It did make me seek out those things and the process was enjoyable! Other times if I didnt notice something was a reference, it made the moment I saw the actual thing even more enjoyable.

I love that there's a reference to the Life of Brian in the background :')

Love the Life of Brian refernece
unclebreezybum 10 months ago
My 15 year old brother doesn't know who Audrey Hepburn is, he doesn't understand ANY Monty Python references, he doesn't understand references I make to Star Trek, Star Wars, or any other sort of geekery, he doesn't understand music references…
I find this to be a problem. And this video totally nails that problem on the head.
References are a part of culture, and kids should DEFINITELY be introduced to them!
hitheresunshine 10 months ago
I love references. One of my favorite things is when I mention something that only one or two people know other than myself, and they love the fact that I used such an obscure or esoteric reference.

And thats why Animanics was a great show.
boxofrox619 10 months ago
Mind you I used to watch things like Tiny Toons and Animaniacs when I was a kid so maybe I should admit I'm being grumpy and am not into today's computer animated family films.
graemeoliver84 10 months ago
But the thing is nowadays kids films are stuffed with throwaway references to films they won't watch until they're much older (Godfather, Apocalypse Now etc), they say it's for the parents but to be honest I find it a bit irritating, smart-arsey and lazy. I mean, The Simpsons used to be very with good film references (back when it was good) but the average CGI kiddie flick isn't as witty.

Anyone else see ET go over the moon :D
Sorry if anyone else posted that. On another note, yes kids are more knowledgeable these days and they are more likely to actually seek truth rather than some wikipedia crap. These days kids watch QI :)
These days, teenagers work out the news is BS before most adults do. These are the teenagers on the alternative news sites like infowars, getting more facts than the average grown adult!
turbodude555 10 months ago
@turbodude555 Maybe 17-19 year olds but I don't think many 13 year olds watch politicians on the news and are able see through what they're saying before their parents.
graemeoliver84 10 months ago
It is so true. I have watched shows as a child and then seeing them with my younger cousin and knowing the references and pissing myself laughing.
