Warner & Swasey made machine tools, particularly turret lathes. Their machinery was always will respected - we still have some of their machines in our shop where they are used every day. They were always up to date with technology even making fine CNC equipment, but could not compete with the Japanese. Almost all of this equipment is now imported from Japan. Free trade is killing this country.
Thank you for posting this video. I love looking at old buildings and just noticed all those old abandoned industrial buildings in that area (I live in Cleveland). I took photos of the exterior of this building last month. It's cool to see some of the interior, I doubt I'd have the guts to go inside these places.
The corpse of America is just rotting away, thanks be to Bankers and Wall Street types, they teach Economic Treason and how to exploit the working class all around the world, they should tried and shot! I lived in Cleveland for years, I remember them slowly boiling the frog, a little ore rust everyday creeping into the city, jobs leaving and never coming back; well, we always have fast food service jobs to make are kids fat and to be broke for the rest of our lives!
@gjsterp Yes, it is the same building. That's really interesting that your dad worked there and also that you lived so close. Cleveland was a much different city back then. I bet you have plenty of great memories of Cleveland.
Right here is the reason tue good old USA is in trouble-We don't make anything any more-Politicians just don't get it! Too bad-they will one of these days when the American people can't be squeezed anymore-Great video young man !!
Warner and Swasey telescopes were only half of their business. The massively popular and succesful machine tool industry/manufacturing was its niche. A huge success, their machines and tooling are top of the line still today, they are in huge demand by major companies. Stocks and capitalists who didn't understand capitalism brought down W&S. Shame.
Yup, American capitalists think of business as a form of rape and not reproduction. It's what taught in business school. I use a W&S telescope on Kitt Peak Az, I can tell you there were not many of them. W&S turret lathes? There are LOTS of those, my bet is this was a machine tool factory.
@a70sfreak Wow i didn't realize the date of this video. I just found the americadeclines website after forgetting what it was called, haha! In response to your comment; you never know it could have been paranormal!
did a little research on warner-swasey,and holy CLEVELAND did they build some HUGE equipment!
being an amateur astronomer,i got interested in the "telescope factory" thing. that company built some of the largest refractor type telescopes in the world, and quite possibly at that building.the equipment that they designed and built, supplied the basic knowledge of how we see the universe today.
yes most of these are in fact cleveland. we have our fair share of abandoned buildings, and times certainly are hard, but its still a great city and there isnt anywhere i'd rather be.
excuse me for having different taste than you. everyone in the world should be exactly the same as you huh? you pathetic, angry for no reason, insecure, immature, internet fag.
i feel sorry for you. life must be so difficult for you seeing as how you get so upset over something that doesnt concern you what so ever. you're no better than anyone else. grow the heck up.
You all have some balls to go in there - I've got to hand it to you. I've driven past it many a time. Horrendous neighborhood. I'm surprised you didn't come across any squatters or crackheads. Anyway, I love the video. There are many gems like this to be found in Cleveland.
This building in Cleveland is at East 55th and Carnegie, started at this corner in 1880, eventually the buildings ended up at 1 million square feet. At one time 2,000 people worked in these buildings and in WWII 700 machines a month were built to help the war effort. It's been empty for over 20 years.
Warner and Swasey was in business for 110 years. They stopped making telescopes - went into machine tool business. They closed their doors around 1990 -- but the downtown facility at E 55th and Carnegie closed earlier

My Dad worked at W&S for a while, and my father-in-law retired from there.
We lived at 55th and Euclid in the late 40s early 50s.
