5 stars that bridge is SICK NASTY I recently moved here from NY. The low country is 100,000,000x better! cheaper cigs n cheaper beer--sold 24/7 James island bitchesss
@Borobomb1 This is a terrible place to live. Crime is very bad and this is a very boring place to live. I lived there for 8 years and will never come back. Property is way over priced and not worth the price you pay. Word to the wise if you are looking for a nice place to live look somewhere else than South Carolina.."Frowning Faces...Ugly Places..."
Im a Charlestonian living in Portland, OR and I would just like to say two things, one I loved the video and getting to see the new bridge and all its glory again, and two how in the hell did you film I-26 mid day coming out of town and not run into the uauall parking lot that forms on 26 after the Cosgrove exit.
@ANGELBLU2042 Uhh LOOK AT IT, Video doesn’t lie, it's 4 lanes in both directions, which equals 8, hello? The OLD ones had 2 and 3 lanes respectively but it's just a memory now.
@ANGELBLU2042 Yes, I know that been over it countless times, my wife is from the Charleston area, I mentioned that in my previous post. What does that have to do with this video? This NEW Ravenel Bridge has 8 lanes (4+4).
@Freewayjim Since you may not be from SC, as I am, have been over those bridges many times in 50 yrs, and lived in Charleston. The OLD original Cooper River Bridge, before the 2nd (of 3rd bridge - Ravenel). The very first bridge had one lane going and coming in each direction. Then they build the second bridge and made each one 2 lanes. You likely would not know that, having not grown up here.
@ANGELBLU2042@ANGELBLU2042 I've been visiting Charleston regularly since 1988 and I even have a book on the history of the old bridges, I've crossed and photographed them many times, plus I am a bridge/highway enthusiast which means I know them as well if not better than you do.
So again, where did I ever say they were 8 lanes? do you not read my posts?
@Freewayjim I kno this is Super late but I just became a subscriber of yours..Great work by the way..I think angelblu is referring to 2:42 bout the 8 travel lanes but even at that you have four travel lanes going one way and 4 on the other...so your right either way
@ANGELBLU2042 I watched the video again, where did I ever say the "Old" bridges had 8 lanes? never, I only commented in what was in the video, which does have 8 lanes. In fact I NEVER once mentioned the old Cooper River Bridges so I really don't understand where your original question came from.
Good video but doesn't even come remotely close to capturing the grandeur of the Ravenel Bridge nor the stunning vista of Charleston harbor. But that's a good thing because we native Charlestonians are utterly sick of d*bags from Ohio in their Buckeye hoodies, and rude a-holes from New England infesting our city. Go away!
I love it here in Charleston, but what always got me was weather you're coming from 17 or 703 (Coleman Blvd.) you're pretty much forced to take the Ravenel Bridge. Pretty inconvenient for those who don't want to go all the way into the city limits. By the way, awsome vids.
I just went to Charleston SC for the first time in May and coming back, I made a wrong turn and went this way...It was the best!!!! I love Charleston! wish I could live there.
@fishnut89 dude you ain't seen the half off it old people and cautious people and retards on there cell phone drinking beer with their dog in their lap (i have seen them do that. traffic is awful.
I was on that bridge when we went on vacation in Myrtle Beach and visited Charleston in 2007. That bridge is unusual. It looks like something out of Star Wars!
damn, i hate driving. 526 sucks. living in Charleston SC means spending at least 3 hours a day on the road from the Ravenel bridge to the I526 to 26 or 17 or on Maybank Hwy Bohicket Rd! Its a waste of life to sit in the car. Charleston is really a nice place, but i can do without the driving! maybe we can get a big tugboat to pull all the land together so we all wouldn't have to drive so far...Signed Ms America® by Trump®
Thanks for the video! I used to live there before and after the bridge was built. I remember going across the old bridges that were there before this one was built. It was scary. Those bridges were in terrible shape and were quite narrow for the amount of traffic.
I watched an engineering show on the construction of this bridge and its process. Talk about an engineering marvel and a pain in the ass to build. Very cool! Its the longest of its type.
yeah i live here and one week ago i got in a wreck on the bridge...it was insane...hit a car in front of me...sailed through all four lanes of traffic during 5:30 traffic...and slammed into the wall going 50 mph...good thing i didn't hurt any pedestrians. Then an eighteen wheeler almost sandwiched my wrecked car, but stopped in time.
yeah my knee is still pretty bad, but i was wearing my seatbelt...it could have been a lot worse. that makes accident number 6 in two years...i'm obviously here for a reason.
That bridge is nothing to play around with when it's nasty outside I was getting whipped around I could only drive 15 it was so windy I love that bridge you can walk up there and and sit on a piller. The Beast from the East.

I life in Charleston and I remeber when that bridge 1st open and when i went across it 2 hours later it took almost 20 minutes to get across it becuse of the traffic
Wow! I'm paralyzed in a care home, can't get out. thanks for the trip! I lived in Charleston in 1967 and we had one big ass narrow bridge, that was it! went to mt. pleasent. Is it still standing? It would scare the hell out of you! Feel like I went to S.C today! I LOVE YOUTUBE! for those of us who are stuck, we now have wings!!!
They took down the two old bridges. And as for scary, you could drive on the oldest bridge and your side mirrors would be only 2 inches away from the 18 wheeler beside you! Not to mention that you could feel the bridge swaying as you drove across it.
I wish I'd had my bike when I went down there in 2006 (my sister takes half the house on vacations). That bridge has a really wide bike and pedestrian lane on each side
Everyone loves this bridge! I was at the Spoleto Art Festival 2 yrs ago in Charleston & there was at least 1 painting of this bridge at almost every tent. The art community just loves it. How can you not? Way better than those 2 old ugly metal bridges they had before.
ok ok yes its more impressive looking than our skyway bridge in tampabay but our bridge takes almost an hour to go accross the total length.
Plus we are loosing lots of cruise ship business because the dam thing is too low so dont be supprised if the sky way gets redone espicaly with the panama canal remodle. Once the canal is done we will get lots of bigger ships comming our way but this bridge is realy pretty. Why such a big bridge tho?
The bridge was built to last 100 years and was built with larger ships in mind coming up the Cooper River (Industry & Such) in the future. Pretty smart if you ask me. It's really awesome seeing the USS Yorktown Parked in front of the bridge on the north side of it looking west.
Not particularly speaking of THIS trip, yes, the bridge is great. I'm just speaking of SC in general. As in my trip down I-20 a few weeks ago and not being able to see anything. I never even saw the capital, nor even the skyline of anything that trip.
What computer effect did you do at the beginning and end of the video? I thought that was a very interesting effect, and an intriguing one you did in this video.
Seems like cable-stayed bridges are popular in the South, when it comes to long bridges over waterways.
Not just the southern USA but world wide. They are a whole lot cheaper and because they are cement you mold them in to just about any shape. Your imagination is the only limit.
i live in south Carolina and the bridge is so nice

Where do you have the cam mounted? It looks like you were able to turn it when you came up on the bridge but can't see the dash, windshield or hood?

@NorthChuckToyota The camera is on a tripod placed on the front seat floorboard, my passenger turned the camera at that point.
