I used to played the trumpet, it's been like over 10 yrs and I haven't touch the damn instrument ever since. And it's a shame. I think I've forgotten everything I learned.
I am having trouble getting low notes to have a nice sound and I am also having trouble getting pedals to sound good. I noticed I can't seem to get my upper-lip from going past/covering the lower lip. Do you have any suggestions?
I see that the first buzz is at the height of G on the top of the staff and the second buzz "contre ut" = double C. For people who can do this easely I think they need no longer some advice for playing trompet.
If you send me a private message with how you're trying, or what isn't working for you, (if you're interested in some help), I'll try to help you in any way I can.
Many thanks for the reply. I too have played the larger mouthpieces, ( Curry 80S, Bach1.25C, Warburton 3SV) but feel that my endurance and range might be helped by reverting to the old 7C Bach as it is apparently such a good 'allrounder' . My old friend Randy Sandke (already a great all round player) still changed from a large mouthpiece to Bach 7D with a 25 backbore and it has expanded his range, flexibility and tone.
Enjoy all your videos that have excellent advice! But could you let us all know which mouthpiece(s) you use? Are they very shallow, wide rimmed, standard or specials etc? It would be great to hear your response.
Thanks for all your great contribution to trumpet tuition
I use a regular old Bach 1 1\2C, Bach 3C, and sometimes a bach 7C (my regulars are the 1 1\2C and the 3C).
There was a time when I played smaller mouthpieces, such as the shallow and small rimmed schilke 12b4- but, I've moved back to the standard Bach mouthpieces for the time being.
@DrGsto I've been playing trumpet for about 4 years and I'm deciding which new mouthpiece i should get in place of my Bach 7c, what do you think would be good for most players at my stage?
Sorry for the late reply, I've been pretty busy lately. My technique for vibrato is a natural air stream that varies a little to help cause the effect of vibrato. I also (depending on how much I need) use the light movement of the fingers on the valve tops to help move along the vibrato. It should be a slow movement of the fingers on the valves if you're going to use that method. There are a lot of methods, I'm sure- however, these are the methods I use.
If you are having trouble with endurance, let me know about how long you can play, your regular playing routine, and any other information you think would be good for me to know about your playing, and I'll get back to you. (please send in the form of a private message so my text is not limited)
yep- it's a favorite of mine... It's a shame my camera's mic stinks.... I'd love to sound better than the camera lets me sound when I play it- that's why I won't play the real variations on trumpet for youtube.
Hello, Dr. G Sto, I just wanted to ask, how you make those peddle tones speak without noticeably pouting your lower lip? Are you putting your tongue real down?
you loosen up your lips some- the looser they are while still producing a buzz allows a lower pitch to be emitted. If you require a more specific answer, please send me a private message.
Hi DrGsto: I have been watching your videos, you provide good tips in simple language. I have been struggling to learn the trumpet for about three years I am still having trouble hitting a G at the top of the staff. Do you have any tips? Thanks for your help.
It takes some time and work, if you ask me in a private message, I could give you a lot more information than I can while leaving a response in a message here (limited to 500 characters). Before I was taught how to play with my trumpet, I had to learn to buzz first. So, I had to learn double/triple tonguing without a trumpet... Long and short, that's how I can tongue quickly without a trumpet ;). If you want more information, feel free to PM me.
I use all 3 valves so that the air has more room to travel- this sometimes knocks out some of the unclarity of pitch. Sometimes not... Some pedal tones play better with just the regular valve down, added valves, or no valves! It all depends on how you learned, are currently playing, and the tuning of each note. As of the time, I do not give out the location of my school- sorry.
there were many musical opportunities for us in our high school. County band, district band, all state, all eastern, regionals and a few others... However, I never managed to get to districts... I get nervous when I play important stuff, I guess... The trombone player in our group (next to me in the legend of zelda video) got into districts, county band, regional band, states, and all eastern...
Gonna try that technique on buzzing. I've read that muscles aren't supposed to move your lips but the force of the air is supposed to. I think this is really good instructional for any brass player. After playing for 2 and a half years I still don't need work on what's really happening on the inside. Not to mention I don't know how to tongue at all. :)
onewing22, long tones are the best exercise anyone can do to build a better tone and range. Start with the low f# or G flat (123). Set your lips on the mouth piece and play soft and long as posible. The exercise start when you get to the end of holding your note (each note). Don't move the top lip from the mouth piece, open the corners to take in air. The purpose is learning you proper set in the mouth piece. Procede to the next note chromatic movement. Objective to build control and range...

lol with buzzing I have a hard time actually creating a note. Usually I just get something that sounds kind of like a buzz, but not an actual note.

I use a Bach 3C or a Bach 1 1\2C

Impressive buzzing! lol
Are you playing/buzzing with wet or dry lips?
I've always had trouble getting a good lip buzz. It either ends up tight and constricted or as a double buzz.
I play and buzz with wet lips though, so maybe that is the reason.
Could also be my 'tear drop' shaped top lip.
Question: Do you think all people can play this way? (Lip roll) Yes/No and why?
oh and
Question 2: What is the best order of exercises to develop this technique?
Feel free to pm me ur answer if you wish.
