awesome idea, what would happen if you replaced the sand with say, a metal cover with a hole? The idea is so the top layer of the saw dust doesnt burn right?
It's nice. But what about the dark side of the moon ? It's smokeless because the sawdust becomes charcoal quickly and when charcoal burns it produces no smoke rather it produces carbon monoxide, a lethal gas, heavier than air, so it seeps out of ash pan and spreads on the floor. Dangerous for pets and humans who can sleep on the carpet. Carbon monoxide is a stealthy killer and so lethal that it can kill you in your sleep without you feeling anything. Charcoal stove is not good in closed doors.
Every winter a lot of poor people in villages in India die from the charcoal stove (a different kind than this) as they sleep, while using it to heat their rooms. As they sleep on the floor, they become easy prey of the carbon monoxide. Smaller variations of this stove have been used by people in Indian villages for cooking for centuries ....earlier they used cow dung dust as fuel before sawmill existed.
I want one, haven't got a supply of sawdust, but, I want one!!! That is such a brilliant use of sawdust, something that is normally swept up and thrown away every day in many mills and workshops across the country, it's brilliant!!! :D
Amazing Video: my mother just told me about this stove, i didn't understand, then i started to search, now i found this and can't even believe it works!!!!!!!!!!!Amazing Video
while you took the time to show yourself cooking on it, you never actually explained what is going on. where is the exhaust? Is it double-barreled just to keep heat transfer to outside objects down? I would be rather cautious about stuffing all that fuel in there and leaving it unattended. can you explain?
@ElfNori Thanks for your comments. This stove has got a false floor and the damper is normally fitted to the flue, not the stove itself. The use of 2 flue outlets is of no benefit as the outer barrel transfers much less heat when using an outlet at the top.(we know we have built one). With parts and labour this stove would cost over £200 to build yourself here in the UK. Maybe steel and labour are cheaper in the US.
Just purchased one of these from British Hardwoods and am delighted with the ease of use and how warm my premises are compared to previously. Brilliant product.
old concept that has always worked well. We dont have much sawdust here any more in the usa, as most the mills are closed. Solid wood stoves prevail as more and more ppl use them due to high energy bills and unemployment rises. Nice setup, hope you have plenty access to sawdust.

I am curious as to the BTU capacity of this stove. How many pounds of sawdust go into a loading?
gfbrant 1 year ago
@gfbrant The stove takes about 25 kilograms of fine shavings.

Thanks. This type of stove is not restricted to sawdust, try using very fine paper shreddings from a high security paper shredder.
