80's babies, unite. And bring back the unbridled optimism attitude of the decade we were born in. The last decade was our 70's. This decade is our 80's.
I have tremendous respect for all of those who served and fought in Viet Nam. This country owes them a debt that cannot be re-paid. Thank you to all the Viet Nam Vets and Welcome Home! Semper Fi til I die!
Good song off of a good album.....and kudos for Huey for being a Patriotic American and conveying what Vietnam Vets go through.....those Vets need all the appreciation and recognition that can be given to them. Songs like this one and "Goodnight Saigon" help me to have more respect for the artists who wrote them and the soldiers about which they wrote.
God Bless the troops from Vietnam. Those who came home and those who didn't. Maybe you don't agree with the war, and maybe we shouldn't have been there, but alot of young men just did what they were told and did it for their country, even when everyone back home was against them.
@hovadopekelne 2 and 1/2 million, mostly Christian, Vietnamese were slaughtered by the communists after we walked away. You are are a typical brainless liberal. The war was moral, walking away and condemning millions to die WAS immoral.
I agree with blica1, awesome sound, and yes it did sound nearly identical to their studio version. Awesome, awesome group, they are 1 of my favorite groups of all time. What great, meaningful lyrics.

@USA1749NY2SFnSD2Fork and when he lost his arm, his best friend in the world literally sacrificed himself to get him on the tank, right when my teacher was put on the tank, a bullet went right through his head
You'r e never safe once you've been under fire...Haven't we come a long way, you know the way our citizens receive our current campaign veterans. We appreciate your service and those folks y'all "fightin' for" appreciate it more than they can express. Props to you, servicemen and women. What did you like the most about service? What scared you the most?
I loved this band. When all the other groups at the time were trying to have some sort of gimmick, these guys would come on stage in blue genes and button downs and just be themselves. Great times...Great memories.
I owe my love for playing drums to Bill Gibson. Saw them in 1984 at Age 9, Timberwolf (Mason, OH) where it was supposedly Huey's 34th b-day.
Say what you will about the "drums" on Sports and Fore. Seeing him play those songs live in his own style with fantastic fills and sheer power was an impression of ear splitting volume I'll never forget. Not to mention, what a great way to be introduced to live gigs!
@iriegnome Can you recall Huey's harmonica solo that far back? It about cracked my ear drums. Totally underrated band when it comes to simply being good.
his lead git player is pretty awesome. Thanks for the reference song....it was all we could do at the time.....a time when "freaks" meant something different. We couldn't be vets, and we couldn't shout out what we had done for the people back home. We truly were - walking on a thin line. ssgtchavez,DaNang,68
The band is tighter than tight and the song is straight up gold. "labeled as freaks loose on the streets of the city." Thanks for the flashback. Party naked!
Huey Lewis and the News rocks, but so does Springsteen. I wouldn't be proud to have a narrow taste in music. Conventional voices aren't the only beautiful singing voices. Conventional voices are sometimes the worst, as American Idol reminds me all the time.
This might be their best song.I like the guitar solo in this song. However this song would sound better and have a little more of an edge if it didn't have the keyboard.Every band in the 80's had to have a keyboard.I think that is why I liked the 90s' so much at least the early 90s' when songs were not overproduced. The 80s had some great music but all too often that damn Casio keyboard or "Keytar" overstayed its' welcome. Raw guitar and no keyboard is what this needs
I like them both but for a great tribute to vietnam vets, check out goodnite saigon by billy joel . It is awesome... thank you to all veterans out there.
finishing up Huey has a 3-4 piece horn section, nice touch. Huey can sing acapella amazingly he dont need any instruments to back him up. Now live bruce blows huey away & i have seen huey four times and loved him everytime once from the first row center stage. Really it is a waste of time to compare rock stars because they all bring something different to the table. Just be glad we have those two still around. Im glad i grew up with them instead of Lady Gaga. no thanks. Madonna was my lady gaga.
here is my two cents worth on bruce vs. Huey. Bruce is a rock god. He i an amazing performer and hard worker. In his younger days he just shredded the guitar (see 1978 version of Prove it all night) 7 min intro that just shreds. He has one of the best sax players out there. Now Huey is the ultimate lounge singer (See his cover album of oldies just amazing work) Huey does not play any instruments except the harmonica. Now Bruce can no way sing as good as huey. and i love bruces vocals.
Bruce springsteen? Ha! Did you guys know "Born in the U.S.A." isn't even a patriotic song at all? It's about how cruel a soldier was treated when he came back to America after fighting. Or something like that. Everybody thought it was patriotic because of the title but it's the total opposite.
THIS song, Walking on a thin Line, is a true tribute to the veterans.
I remember this song from when I was a kid...haven't heard it in years...when you're a kid you don't really listen to the lyrics, you just like the beat of a song (at least I did) but now that I've really listened to the lyrics this is such a great song. I'm revisiting a lot of the songs I used to listen to as a kid to see what I've missed out on...lyric-wise.
@stephanierodriq I know exactly what you mean... I was a huge fan of Huey Lewis and the News as a teen in the 80's, but lyrical translations meant absolutely nothing at that age. These guys are great in any decade, too!
This might be their best song.I like the guitar solo in this song. In retrospect though this song would sound better and have a little more of an edge if it didn't have the keyboard.Every band in the 80's had to have a keyboard.I think that is why I liked the 90s' so much at least the early 90s' when songs were not overproduced. The 80s had some great music but all too often that damn Casio keyboard or keytar overstayed its' welcome. This is a well written song that should have a raw guitar sound
More details about this classic? Find out at the blog SongSense.info. They've got all the details. Seriously, all the stuff they tell you there is incredible.
I think of my friend when I hear this song. He was shot pretty badly, and I kept him alive. I did it by ripping my t-shirt to shreads and plugging his wounds. He was bleeding pretty bad. His wounds were dark as jam. I can safely say now that I stabbed myself in the leg to get on that chopper with him. WHen we got to the MASH I stayed with him. He made it, got sent home. A few days later, I got a hug from a old south V.C. woman in a village. "Thank you...." she said. "Good, you!"
@TheSoironic That was quite the roller-coaster ride of events and emotions, soldier. We're talking about [you] giving major props to yourself - you saving a life - self inflicted stab wounds - chillin' at MASH units - getting hugs and thanks from some elderly, southern v.c. woman. Nice!
Yep, that's certainly quite the story... and you're currently only 22 years old?
It's all so hard to understand if you weren't there. I feel sorry for Iraq vets, because the hipsters are just as bad, if not worse then the hippies. At least hippies fought for a cause they thought was right. Hipsters just don't care and act above everyone who tries....
Does anyone know if this is from a live album? I'd love to have it...Also has the live version of heart of rock and roll on it, also heart and soul and trouble in paradise...Has the Tower of Power horn section with them, anyone know if this is a live album? Thanks
@lookherechump That's what made the 80's so special. We used to be able to see concerts and such live on cable tv ('83 US Festival, Live Aid). This kind of greatness doesn't happen anymore... :'(
@boshane123 Specifically, this is from a 1985 Showtime special. Warner Brothers released it on VHS shortly after, but it has never been on DVD that I'm aware of...
GREAT POST! Am glad to have heard the intro as for all these years I didn't know the song was an homage to the Viet Nam war and how it messed up so many people all over the world and started our country down a very dark road of disillusion and polarization. Regardless of one's political views, I think that the consensus is that Huey Lewis and the News and this song ROCK!!!!
Yeah, Huey had the less-is-more approach to the fist pump down. Much more effective than the full extension, if you can pull it off properly. Which he did-in spades! Pretty sure he invented it, or at least perfected it. He should get royalties everytime it's used by another singer. Powerful song. Great performer (yes, better than Springsteen). Tight band!
God Bless ALL our troops that served in the past, present and future. God Bless the USA. Dedicated to the soldiers of the 7th USAFAD, West Germany '86-'87 GO ARMY!!!!
this song is the shit. think about what huey was saying in this jam and think about how much bullshit was out when this jam hit the street and how that cat was dropping knowledge and givin props to them vietnam vets
this song i remeber my dad and his friend who was a green beret telling me about this song, the things they told me about the war i will not describe on here
Super: Thanks for your kind comments. My father did two two tours in Vietnam as a career sailor. Larry's life was sad indeed and whenever I hear this song I'll always think of him. You didn't have to die to pay a high price when going to war. RIP Larry.
My brother-in-law, Larry Nickolson, was one of the guys who got screwed up in Vietnam. He went to war on his senior trip and came home a different person. Larry fought his own personal war for the past 40 years. Today, he is at peace after dying last night at his home in Dumas, Arkansas. Rest in peace, Larry.
God bless that man for his personal sacrifices to his country, I am deeply sorry to read that he was one of the many to suffer because of that war. My father faught in it as well. He came out ok but has taught me a deep understanding of what a lot of people had to deal with afterwards. My he rest in peice. My praryers are with you and his family. I do mean that from the deepest part of my heart.
They need to still have a song for all the men and women who represented the United States in World War 2. Why did it took so many years to finally get a memorial in Washington for the WW2 vets????
yes ...dig this song.. and band like for all times...very bright musicians..no screaming .just good solid music..and sound..sung this song for all those times life gave me a curve ball..got me through sane..and well...thanks HUEY and the news...
Check out drummer Bill Gibson at 5:04 .... he tosses a stick and grabs another without missing a beat ! ... ' The Human Clock ' ... you can set your watch to this guys meter !!!
@stevebigrig Agreed. Better voice, stage presence, etc. And Huey never took himself too seriously, unlike our boy Springsteen. That gets him more points in my book. Always thought Bruce was overrated. And this song on Vietnam is more powerful than Bruce's "U.S.A." Glad he' s still around singing.
oceans20113 bruce isn't mainstream. he's more like behind close doors. But it doesn't matter everyone likes someone who performs. I prefer huey. Huey is more fun and bruce is like more serious.
Saw them at Frontier Days in Cheyenne, WY...hands down: THE best live performance I have EVER seen...lost my voice from singing along from start to finish, the rear of stands almost went down from people standing on the benches dancing and rocking out!
That's not correct, the current band still features 3 original members: Johnny Colla on guitar and saxophone, Sean Hopper on keyboards and Bill Gibson on drums. But I do miss Chris Hayes on lead guitar soooo much!

@stephanierodriq I know exactly what you mean... I was a huge fan of Huey Lewis and the News as a teen in the 80's, but lyrical translations meant absolutely nothing at that age. These guys are great in any decade, too!
fred1671 1 year ago
This might be their best song.I like the guitar solo in this song. In retrospect though this song would sound better and have a little more of an edge if it didn't have the keyboard.Every band in the 80's had to have a keyboard.I think that is why I liked the 90s' so much at least the early 90s' when songs were not overproduced. The 80s had some great music but all too often that damn Casio keyboard or keytar overstayed its' welcome. This is a well written song that should have a raw guitar sound

Huey wrote this song for the vietnam vets. Good Job Hueman!
It hit #18 on the billboard charts

I think of my friend when I hear this song. He was shot pretty badly, and I kept him alive. I did it by ripping my t-shirt to shreads and plugging his wounds. He was bleeding pretty bad. His wounds were dark as jam. I can safely say now that I stabbed myself in the leg to get on that chopper with him. WHen we got to the MASH I stayed with him. He made it, got sent home. A few days later, I got a hug from a old south V.C. woman in a village. "Thank you...." she said. "Good, you!"

Either you're lying about this story, or you're lying about being only 22 years old...
wby3006 1 year ago
@TheSoironic That was quite the roller-coaster ride of events and emotions, soldier. We're talking about [you] giving major props to yourself - you saving a life - self inflicted stab wounds - chillin' at MASH units - getting hugs and thanks from some elderly, southern v.c. woman. Nice!
Yep, that's certainly quite the story... and you're currently only 22 years old?
fred1671 1 year ago
It's all so hard to understand if you weren't there. I feel sorry for Iraq vets, because the hipsters are just as bad, if not worse then the hippies. At least hippies fought for a cause they thought was right. Hipsters just don't care and act above everyone who tries....

Does anyone know if this is from a live album? I'd love to have it...Also has the live version of heart of rock and roll on it, also heart and soul and trouble in paradise...Has the Tower of Power horn section with them, anyone know if this is a live album? Thanks

lookherechump 1 year ago 2

Regardless of one's political views, I think that the consensus is that Huey Lewis and the News and this song ROCK!!!!

my dad volunteered in that d*** war and survived! thx Huey and the News!

Few bands can sound live like they do on the record. This is one of them.
yonigga223 1 year ago
Yeah, Huey had the less-is-more approach to the fist pump down. Much more effective than the full extension, if you can pull it off properly. Which he did-in spades! Pretty sure he invented it, or at least perfected it. He should get royalties everytime it's used by another singer. Powerful song. Great performer (yes, better than Springsteen). Tight band!
mistermudslick 1 year ago
Huey knew how to work that mild fist pump. I think he laid the ground work for all fist pumpers and fist bumpers. A true innovator.

I'm not a huge Lewis fan. But this is probably the best rock song inspired by Vietnam, next to Creedence's "Fortunate Son" --

Super: Thanks for your kind comments. My father did two two tours in Vietnam as a career sailor. Larry's life was sad indeed and whenever I hear this song I'll always think of him. You didn't have to die to pay a high price when going to war. RIP Larry.
arkman57 2 years ago
My brother-in-law, Larry Nickolson, was one of the guys who got screwed up in Vietnam. He went to war on his senior trip and came home a different person. Larry fought his own personal war for the past 40 years. Today, he is at peace after dying last night at his home in Dumas, Arkansas. Rest in peace, Larry.
arkman57 2 years ago
God bless that man for his personal sacrifices to his country, I am deeply sorry to read that he was one of the many to suffer because of that war. My father faught in it as well. He came out ok but has taught me a deep understanding of what a lot of people had to deal with afterwards. My he rest in peice. My praryers are with you and his family. I do mean that from the deepest part of my heart.

They need to still have a song for all the men and women who represented the United States in World War 2. Why did it took so many years to finally get a memorial in Washington for the WW2 vets????

Huey kicks Springsteens ass as far as singer and performer,His band is way tighter and he can actually sing.
stevebigrig 2 years ago 33
stevebigrig, I don't agree with you. Springsteen is a great performer but I have to agree with you on Huey's voice, it is stronger................
LBjim 2 years ago
@stevebigrig Agreed. Better voice, stage presence, etc. And Huey never took himself too seriously, unlike our boy Springsteen. That gets him more points in my book. Always thought Bruce was overrated. And this song on Vietnam is more powerful than Bruce's "U.S.A." Glad he' s still around singing.
mistermudslick 1 year ago
@stevebigrig
Are you on ACID 2nite !! No way Huey is better than Bruce ...But hey if ya think you know music .....then fuk ya !!!
oceans20113 1 year ago
oceans20113 bruce isn't mainstream. he's more like behind close doors. But it doesn't matter everyone likes someone who performs. I prefer huey. Huey is more fun and bruce is like more serious.
