He wasnt death the entire time! He died when he got shot by Vincent.Like the boy said ''they dont know that they are death''.So...the kid didnt know the man was death because he had his wound on his back side!

The kid was death too because he told him to speak with his wife while she is sleeping,that way she will answer his questions but dont realize he is there!

When I saw this scene in the theater it made me realize that I had been doing the same thing that Malcolm had done with a dead relationship in my life. I only saw what I wanted to see. I almost fell out of my chair. I couldn't stop crying. Some may say this movie is based on a simple dramatic irony technique that is just a device, but as an emotional framework I think it functions wonderfully in this movie.

She acknowledges Malcolm's presence by saying that he has 1 hour of therapy with Malcolm while his mother makes him some triangle pancakes. She just says 'You got an hour', which I am led to assume that she is talking about his appointment with Malcolm. That is an example of acknowledging the presence of a dead person. A person who is not there.

What the guy had to do was figure out what he did wrong with one one guy who shot him. He was like the little boy, he saw dead people. No, it was because the kid didn't know if he was a good ghost or bad ghost and wanted all ghosts to leave him alone. It wasn't until later that kid realized Malcolm was a good ghost and realized that Malcolm could help him.

But I questioned it, and I think the generally accepted explanation is that he was kept in the world of the living to (a) help Cole and (b) make his wife feel comfortable again. Ghosts only live in the moments which may help their cause, only seeing "what they want to see", while fate helps it naturally unfold. He only realised he was a ghost at the end because that became necessary for him if he was to exit the world of the living.

this movie was ok, but I got really confused at the end. if the boy was afraid of ghosts, why wasn't he afraid of the doctor, who also was a ghost all this time. and was the boy the only person that could see, the doctor, or could his mom see him too. and when the cole told the doctor, I see dead people, why didn't he just say just like you.

@artpeacemaster The boy wasn't afraid of the doctor because he wasn't a scary ghost. All kinda ghosts he saw were dead, bleeding, with amputated body parts. The doctor was a normal spirit walking without any signs of a gruesome death. The boy was the only one who could see him. In a scene where his mother and the doctor are sitting, the mother doesn't see the doctor but only the kid. The kid surely sees the doctor.

Had he said "Just like you", the movie would have ended there. :)

@artpeacemaster I think the boy knew that the Doctor was unaware, and didn't want to scare him and prevent him from helping him. Although I don't quite get how he himself didn't realize that he was dead before hand when his wife continued to ignore is a bit of a plot hole to me. But hey, I can't say that I didn't shed a tear when he was finally saying goodbye to his wife. Great movie.
