why do so much bassist use a plectrum?

Why should bassists use only their finger and thumb for playing? A pick gets a very rock n roll sound out of the bass, which is incidentally what GnR bassist Duff McKagan does, and its regarded as a crucial part of the GnR sound. I think that as long as you know how to use both a pick and your fingers, it doesnt matter what you use in the end. A true bassist doesn't think about what he plays with, but focuses on getting the sound he wants (and you cant get the GnR sound without a pick)

your wrong stickywitelov try to play stuff of victor wooten or john entwistle. i bet you cant be near those guys level they are realy bass masters. duff is a great bassist but you cant compare him to the greats like larry graham marcus miller victor and john . they are in totaly different level

And also different genre... Entwistle ain't that much different though, but you can slightly see the "PUNX" in Duff. Entwistle made some awesome stuff with The Who, but you can't compare a punk rocker to a master of the bass art, can you? You can only compare Duff to his genre. Like Nikki Sixx etc. I agree Duff ain't the best player in the world. But his the best basist in the world to me, and thats what matters to me. DUFF forever man!

first off nikki sixx is glam metal guns n roses is hair metal look it up they didnt wear make up and write abunch of shitty ballads like those pussys from motley crue and duff rocks no doubt but the best bassist in rock ever is cliff burton when he died in 1986 metallica went down hill you want proof ok il give it to you compare garage inc,black album, and st. anger to say kill em all , ride the lightning or master of puppets yeah thats what i thought!
