You could become a slave if you did not pay your debt, as well as choosing to be a slave,to have your needs provided by your master, it not racially based but status based. Purpose of the Bible is show the way to salvation, not reform society. The people who wrote the Bible were inspired by God, which in course the same.

There is only one final proof for God. Did Jesus come to the earth, live, die and rise again?? God is either revealed or God is impersonal or dead/non-existent. @bluecrew3 - It doesn't make it false, it just leaves it as an untestable hypothesis. And I can compare this scenario to "Innocent until proven guilty" in the criminal justice system. Until it can be tested, is tested, and qualifies to become an actual theory supported by scientific evidence, I will have no reason to believe in anything at all that is supernatural, just like how I will have no reason to believe the defendant is guilty until the prosecutor presents valid and testable evidence.

That would lead me to conclude that my best guess is that those happened, but I can't know for sure if they did. @bluecrew3 - That's the flaw in your argument, I'm not the one claiming those things happened, thus I don't have the burden of proof. If it's impossible to find scientific evidence behind the existence of Jesus/God, then I am sorry, but then it's impossible to prove them to be real and I will never have a reason to think they are.

To say what is good and what is bad would be to achieve perfection, surely you are not claiming that? Instead of beat, I believe you mean discipline from which is the intention. It's bad because it allows people to both own slaves and also beat their slaves. Going back to the first comment, though, our laws didn't come from the Bible. They actually came from the people who wrote the Bible.

@Critic863 The slavery referred to in the Bible is completely different from the one in the past few centuries. You could become a slave if you did not pay your debt, as well as choosing to be a slave,to have your needs provided by your master, it not racially based but status based. Purpose of the Bible is show the way to salvation, not reform society. The people who wrote the Bible were inspired by God, which in course the same.

@iamspid3rman - You're leaving out the involuntary slavery that existed in that time period. I could easily say the purpose of any book is to show the way to salvation, but that's not true. Books are stories, stories are over exaggerated and blown out of proportion in order to interest the reader to make sales. This definitely happened with the writing of the Bible. The people who wrote the Bible weren't inspired by God, they were inspired by the idea of a god existing. So it's not the same.

This is so manipulated. Dangerous stuff. This discussion is totally irrelevant for whether or not God exists. Other religions punish the same crimes as christians do. Religions that did not co-exist before the 16th century. And to deny that people existed before the bible.....The bible itself explains stuff that happened before it existed. If the bible is, in part, a composure of the writings of the evangelists, didn't the evangelists live before The Bible?

"God", whatever that means, is not necessary to determine what's right or wrong. There are biological/chemical boundaries/limitations within 99% of the humans that stop them from a collective suicide. Most ppl don't care whether it's allowed or not to kill their parents/children. They WON'T do it anyway, because of biology/chemistry!!! "Free will" is a religious hype/nonsense! There is NOTHING called "free will". There are only chemicals and biological precesses going on in our brains!

With that said, look up the ABC Nightline versions, as this debate was televised on a "Special". Theres nothing stopping anyone from doing whatever they want, it's completely possible to commit a crime and get away with it depending on your own moral compass. You think there are people who don't get away with shit? Religious people make this argument because they can't live with the fact that theres no final judgement.
