I haven't seen this remake, but from this preview, it sure seems like they've turned Klaatu into a space monster.... he seems to have no enlightened empathy like the original Klaatu. In early 2008 I had a close encounter with a (small) hovering orb (actually a few encounters, but only the last was really a close encounter), and NONE of the media wished to report it, nonetheless, several reports like project Bluebook and the published British files from the department of defense already confirmed their existence.

Master" had nothing to do with events in the movie. At best one could describe what happened is a machine that could travel in space & time suddenly appeared. Klatuu's mission was unknown & killed at the beginning of the story. Gort was originally Gnut and the real master not Klaatu. Gnut loved Klaatu very much but as a fellow being. The movie is crap beside the original. "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates.
Keanu Reeves as an actor isn't the best, but he's better than say...Shia Labuff. He's flat because that's the character he portrays. His character is an alien, in a human body. So he doesn't really exactly, or doesn't care to portray outward emotion like us.

Yeah, in the original. Gort would physically move. Also the time-line is different. back then it was present time of 1951 and now its present time of 2008. So therefor what and how a person acts, is based off of the year. Like how in the original I think Klaatu came to earth traveling 400,000 MPH. Although nowadays, we know that is extremely slow for outer space travel. So I think the era of which the 2 different movies occurred differentiates how the movie is played out.

I'd have liked this movie if it weren't for the little fucker. What the hell are you guys talking about, "it wasn't realistic"? This criticism seems to be coming from people who think they know everything. Keanu Reeves was sent to see if he could save the human race, and he saw that they were worth saving after all. Although it's no masterpiece (the grave scene WAS evident of sloppy directing, and I hate that little fuck), it's pretty interesting at core, and has good sci/fi elements.
I agree, the kid was added as a plot device, ie to ask questions the adults were too dumb to ask. He's also could be the token minority, and since he's a smartass kid, maybe he'll attract kids to the movie. Reeves was chosen because he's good at portraying wooden characters. But as to saving Earth, I think he should have started with the human race.
I agree we should appreciate it while it lasts. However, it won't last forever. Our sun itself won't either. The earth will become a dead space rock and the sun too will supernova/die one day.

It's pathetic to take a completely novel story and change it into the SOS. I 1st read this 40 years ago. When I saw the old movie in light of having read the story it had it's guts ripped out. The idea of dimensional shift is getting a lot of time in Physics these days and to think of it is tremendously exciting. Our world is just a small little ball in space. We must tend it like the best garden we will ever grow. Thanks for taking the time to at least look the story as it was written.
This movie had so many issues or should I say distractions (boy) interracial climate between a white women and a black ? what's that all about? Should have stuck to the original story line and improved the special effects. That is what I went to see and instead got angry and frustrated over the poor casting and a poorly thoughtless story line. I would guess many many movie goers were dissapointed.

I haven't seen this remake, but from this preview, it sure seems like they've turned Klaatu into a space monster.... he seems to have no enlightened empathy like the original Klaatu. Kind of loses something when Klaatu is just as unfeeling and dispassionate about the future of humanity as the robot Gort.

We're all missing the real point here. This was a absolutely terrible film compared to the 1951 original. Totally awful in every sense of the word. Watch the classic, get the same message and not be assaulted by the likes of Keaunu Reeves and Jaden Smith's horrendous acting.

The original story "Farewell to the
Master" had nothing to do with events in the movie. At best one could describe what happened is a machine that could travel in space & time suddenly appeared. Klatuu's mission was unknown & killed at the beginning of the story. Gort was originally Gnut and the real master not Klaatu. Gnut loved Klaatu very much but as a fellow being. The movie is crap beside the original. "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates.

well seeing how I wasn't alive back then, the special effects is what I am used to. I have seen the original, and I couldn't help but laugh, because of how bad the acting was. I didn't mind the effects in the movie. overall it was decent. also "I" think storyline in the 2008 version was better than the original. but that is what happens with your opinion on movies. and mine. Big generation gap.... Yeah I'm kind of ashamed about the baseball part though, it is Americas past time!

I will have to see this film again. I think what disapointed me the most was the lack of participation from gort as he was my favorite. I always pictured an army of gorts wrecking havoc on the earth. lol the music in the original was creepy too.

Yeah, in the original. Gort would physically move. Also the time-line is different. back then it was present time of 1951 and now its present time of 2008. So therefor what and how a person acts, is based off of the year. Like how in the original I think Klaatu came to earth traveling 400,000 MPH. Although nowadays, we know that is extremely slow for outer space travel. So I think the era of which the 2 different movies occurred differentiates how the movie is played out.

Right, another thing I kind of liked but also disliked about the newer one. Is that the ship was a sphere. I liked it, because it was different, but it just looked too odd.. for me to really like it. However, back then, they took every space ship as a flying saucer.

In the original movie Klaatu was traveling at 4,000 mph but only once the ship was in Earth's atmosphere. When Klaatu and Bobby went to visit the ship before trying to visit Prof. Barnhardt, Klaatu mentions that the ship would travel "a great deal faster" outside Earth's atmosphere but never specified an actual speed.

Yeah, because at the start of the movie when the ship was being tracked by radar, it was already in Earth's atmosphere.The radar operators suspected it to be a buzz bomb because of it 4,000mph speed. Thanks for the chat.

I'd have liked this movie if it weren't for the little fucker. What the hell are you guys talking about, "it wasn't realistic"? This criticism seems to be coming from people who think they know everything. Keanu Reeves was sent to see if he could save the human race, and he saw that they were worth saving after all. Although it's no masterpiece (the grave scene WAS evident of sloppy directing, and I hate that little fuck), it's pretty interesting at core, and has good sci/fi elements.

I agree, the kid was added as a plot device, ie to ask questions the adults were too dumb to ask. He's also could be the token minority, and since he's a smartass kid, maybe he'll attract kids to the movie. Reeves was chosen because he's good at portraying wooden characters. But as to saving Earth, I think he should have started with the human race.

It's pathetic to take a completely novel story and change it into the SOS. I 1st read this 40 years ago. When I saw the old movie in light of having read the story it had it's guts ripped out. The idea of dimensional shift is getting a lot of time in Physics these days and to think of it is tremendously exciting. Our world is just a small little ball in space. We must tend it like the best garden we will ever grow. Thanks for taking the time to at least look the story as it was written.

This movie had so many issues or should I say distractions (boy) interracial climate between a white women and a black ? what's that all about? Should have stuck to the original story line and improved the special effects. That is what I went to see and instead got angry and frustrated over the poor casting and a poorly thoughtless story line. I would guess many many movie goers were dissapointed.
