I went to las vegas then when i came back to detroit this morning of the first day of 2011 i couldnt help but come back to the lafayette coney island. Lafayette all the way
I ran into Bob Probert (sp?) & some of his friends here years ago. I was quite inebriated & you could smell the booze, but the cops that were eating there at the time let me slide because I am such a great guy.
Yea Demo!! First thing for me was to have him pour me a glass of milk and order the dogs...I grew up in Windsor and started to go to clubs in Detroit (Uncle Sams)in mid 70s. A 65 GTO got me and my friends to Layfayette and it was all coney business for an hour. Sure miss Demo, but I return all the time still with wife and 15 year old daughter who thinks the place is a time machine- it is that for sure!
I remember that guy! I think his name was Demo. He always had time to show us tricks when we were kids. I still go to Lafayette for coneys. Great place to go!!
There are simply NO coney joints anywhere in the world that can compare with Lafayette. I dream of these, far away now as I am in Las Vegas. When I come home to Michigan to visit, it's the first place I want to go.
I am from southeast Mi. also and I live in Henderson. Here on water street there is a restaurant called Motor City Coney Island and they serve the dogs just like in Detroit. It has all kinds of memorabillia on the walls and they have Faygo POP, Vernors, Better Made potato chips and sanders hot fudge.
I was born in southwest detroit and missed going to Duley's Coney Island in vernor Hwy... Now that I have lived in Las Vegas for 16+ years I missed the food..thank God that there is a Coney Island in henderson nv... YAY!!
There used to be a Lafayette Coney Island in the Westland Mall. My mom used to work at Hudson's there and would go to Lafayette's on her lunch break back in the late 60's. I been there myself along with my mom & my late grandma whenever we went shopping at Westland. Last time I checked , It was a Kerby's Koney Island. I don't know if it's still there. My mom used to tell me they had great looseburgers there.
That isn't the real Lafayette Coney Island, you suburban (and redneck suburban at that) philistine. Coney Island in a mall... I'd have slapped you If you had said that to my face.
Ohh one other thing. Two experiences in Lafayette. One, Keith Gave (ex Detroit sports writer) tried to get free food cuz he thought he was a celebrity, pathetic. And secondly, Bob Probert was in there and went down to their cave of a bathroom, got high, came up with blow on his nose and tried to fight everyone in there. Good times.
Duly's, I gotta give props. I went into Duly's once and ate a ton of food and forget my wallet, lol. Dude was like (heavy Albanian accent), no problem, pay when you get chance. I did pay later of course. But they are the best. Another thing, no coneys like that anywhere else outside the D. It sucks, I make a special visit everytime I come home.
Duly's on the southwest side of Detroit is the best Coney Island its near the corner of Junction and West Vernor very safe area lots of foot traffic during daytime.
Great Detroit nostalgia for me. I was born and raised in the city (live in NYC now), and went through downtown every day on my way home from high school. So I ate at Lafayette's a lot in the '70's (two loose with everything for me please). It's pretty much unchanged since then, including some of the same guys. Love the milk pouring schtick (is that Demo?). But the decor pre-dates the '70's by a lot. It was already well-aged when my Dad took me there as a little kid in the 60's.

Hard to tell from the video, but is that OPI? He died last year, he was my uncle. Worked there since he was 16.

@Vicki21803 Not Opi, that is Demo. I did see in the paper that Opi died, my condolences.

that is pretty white trash of your parents to do such a thing.
talbort 2 years ago
Umm no it's not. My parents are close friends with most of the waiters so my mom and dad went to see them because they couldn't attend the wedding

nice gesture i suppose, but again - pretty white trash of an act.
