Act! While in delirium, I no longer know what I say,or what I do! And yet it's necessary... make an effort! Bah! Are you not a man?You are a clown! Put on your costume, powder your face. The people pay to be here, and they want to laugh. And if harlequin shall steal your Columbina, laugh, clown, so the crowd will cheer! Turn your distress and tears into jest, your pain and sobbing into a funny face - Ah! Laugh, clown,at your broken love! Laugh at the grief that poisons your heart!
in my opinion Richard Tucker is the master of this song. well i haven't heard everybody but from the ones that i heard i liked Tucker the best on this song
@mchelo18 I think that Pavarotti as a singer might have been just slightly better, but you cannot deny that Domingo is a stunning actor when he sings this.
@rodikgork La mejor interpretacion de este tema la escuche en una grabacion del que a mi particular punto de vista hacido el mejor tenor que ha dado la humanidad el italiano Enrico Caruso
Foremost, music is about how it makes one feel. When I listen to Pavarotti, I am swept up emotionally. But I, and surely many others, must concede that when it comes to "staying true" to the creator's intentions--i.e. sounding like the opera's creator wanted it to sound--I am an amateur.
Caruso's version of this will, for me, always be the epitome of dramatic tenor singing, but way up there with him are Placido Domingo's version, the sublime lyricism of DiStefano, and Bjorling's marvelous rendering. Pavarotti offers a marvelous version, both lyric and dramatic, full of the heart and vocal color that makes Pavarotti a gift to all who have heard him. Bravo, Maestro: you leave your indelible mark on this great aria, and it is a pleasure to visit with you.
@jd1906sf His voice is sublime. My personal favorite performance of this is Roberto Alagna's as he best captures the emotion of the piece. Again, opinion only.

@zek, you are correct, this version is as bad as many other of Pavarotti on Vesti... on the difficult parts he becomes red, presses the voice, took breath wrong like an amateur. He sang loud in here, but FAR away from "good". 1:53 short up? Crap. There was never a good acting on stage, especially not in his older years. A SHADOW of himself what he was in the 80ies!!!
This is one of the great performances of vesti la giubba. The acting, all through the face, is superb, with a combination of anger and sadness perfectly befitting the music. Comparisons aside, this is a masterpiece, from a lovely blessed man we all will miss.
Yes Pav has always been overrated, result of sheer PR machinery that followed him during last 20 years of his singing- when he had spent far more time doing recitals then in opera houses.(in joke I say that the only place in which he didnt sing Nessun Dorma was my garden). Thats why I dont bother to listen Pav post-'70s, only during 60s&70s he was true opera great, in best vocal form, after that- commerciality, media fuzz, pr machinery but at least opera was promoted by him back then.
Pavarotti is the best Tenor to have his records and study over and improve one's self if you are a serious tenor -by depth in the voice, yes pavarotti was not a dramatic tenor like Caruso but the bulk his voice carries oh men if you can't here it and sence it you are missing a lot!

Domingo has the same singing level - and is much more expressive and a better actor on this masterpiece of music. Compare to v=g8-SuM2VwUU and make your opinion. :)
I was at a workshop this summer and saw a video of Arrigo Pola (luciano's teacher) speaking about the phenomenon tenors have requiring them to open up as soprano's do on notes above the secondo passaggio, rather than rounding them. This is why domingo is criticized so heavily, he doesn't open up after G4, he keeps his lips rounded. Domingo's C5's leave something to be desired because he didn't understand the vowel modification required for notes above the secondo passaggio...
But what about expression? Opera is not only about C5's and C4's. Pavarotti may have a perfect C5 but to me he lacks on feeling and personification as is clear in this performance.
Not true have you seen his actual performance that they have on here. You got to be kidding me. I always say that if you can't do it and do it better, than you have no right to say anything about someone who can.
Merci JANOS ACS........ERIC V.
That's too close to call... Pavarotti is absolutely the best tenor in our history, hands down, but as for the best "opera singer," you can't really compare apples to oranges - Pavarotti is a tenor, whereas Joan Sutherland is a female soprano with roughly equal ability in her field. In addition, there are quite a few big names on the rise as we speak. I've been to the Metropolitan Opera seven times now and I've heard some incredible voices that may soon be Pavarotti's spiritual successors.
