So Apple had this idea 20 years ago... and now Apple is gonna steal the same idea from Microsoft?
And btw, Microsoft bought this table from another company, they didnt develop this theirselfs.
Further, this isnt really a case of stealing ideas, it's a pretty forward thing of making a surface screen (in a table, on the wall, etc). It's more a case of whom has the technology.
Apple has proven (with the iphone) it has and Apple has always been better on User Interface. So sorry microsoft (fanboy)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah go cut your wrists cuz macOS inst the worlds leading OS, they steal almost everything. check the history of apple and your messiah jobs. but pls spare me with your fanboy attitude...im definitely not an microsoft fanboy but guys like you are just annoying....but you made me laugh really good so i think were even ;)
Ahh, you really suported your opinion with some good arguments there! No need to go insulting if you want to be taken seriously!
We know Apple isnt THAT original, they buy briliant ideas from other company's and use that.
But they're making it into one big working piece. As I said, it's not really a case of getting the ideas, it's more of how companies put them together (and their technology). It's not fanboy attitude, it's just recognizing a company that actually THINKS about their products.
This computer in the video is based in a small book. Meaning it's using a capacitive or resistive touch screen. Microsoft Surface uses a completely different technology using cameras. That touchscreen can not identify a dollar bill, or a tag that you place on it. Apple has not done a microsoft surface. This looks only to be a prototype, not the final product. Microsoft Surface is meant to be about social interaction, not a personal computer.
@KingBigBang two engineers at Microsoft Made the device, it was not acquired from an outside company. Read the wikipedia article. You are thinking of the Kinect which was aquired, Also i disagree i have used an iphone its interface is OK but i would say the WP7 is more intuitive but that is all in the eye of the beholder. Also Surface technology is pretty cool and takes a lot of engineering talent to come up with.
No I can't talk, but I bet I cost less than a Mac, and could tell you about where the wine you were drinking was made, and a bunch of other stuff. Mac Navigator is simply expensive and can show you a video of someone talking to a camera in Brazil to make you feel like you're not alone
Strange that most people havnt heard of apple vision. Maybe because its not by longshot the same product as microsoft surface. + What did this apple cost?200 000 $? It is a reason for microsoft winning over apple product among avrage Joe.
Uh, it's not really fair to compare Apple's vaporware (i.e., software that doesn't actually have any working code behind it, like in movies) to the Microsoft Surface, which actually exists. If that's the case, then Hollywood had a lot more "innovation" than MS and Apple combined.
Dang, I think we should all stop being fanboys and stop comparing our "teams"
I admit that microsoft has made a very important breakthrough here. Although I don't want to.
But macs are the only computers I would buy. Or mp3 players, etc. And just what exactly is wrong with taking ideas and innovating them to make them better? Microsoft "steals" ideas too, duh. Not to even dare to say Apple doesn't have their own ideas, because fyi, they do. They revolutionized the mobile phone, dont overlook it
why couldnt they compare it to something that was actually made? the iphone. but no, they couldnt do that especially since it would be an embarassment on their part
THIS IS NOT MULTITOUCH (multi=several touch... you stupid), one touch is easy, it s like a mouse... nut multitouch can be very complex to indexate, etc...
Actually, Microsoft does ergonomics too. Ever seen their mice and keyboards? Top-notch. Specialized in ergonomics area, and people have respect for it. Apple fits more of the entertainment bill, but Microsoft does that too.
Actually, Apple steals ideas from everybody else. Multitouch computing isn't an Apple invention. The desktop metaphor isn't an Apple invention either. They steal just as much as all the rest, although they package the "lute" better than anyone else.
Uh actually, Vista took some features from OS X, revamped them to work on Windows, and in some ways, they're actually better. Get your facts right. There's only a few ways to do an OS.
Hey genius, do you really think that Microsoft just whipped this out after seeing the iPhone? Also maybe you should know that the first versions of Mac were written by Microsoft. Or how about that Microsoft had the "widgets" idea six years before Apple did? The only thing apple does good is repackaging old things and making them look nice.
well...amazing enough as it seems...microsoft made a gaming system called the xbox and the xbox. good for them. the zune was a bad idea. the guy who designed the zune got fired.
Funny how Apple was so "nice" as to not implement their foreknowledge of what was to be the latest technology 20 years later. Too bad Apple hasn't ever realized anything like Microsoft Surface since 1987, otherwise Apple fanboys like yourself could have a picnic.
May it be that this video only should be an information on what a vision was in 1987 and what a fact is in 2007? Read the title. But: Did the "MS Surface" present any face-to-face long-distance contact? A biz usefulness? They showed a toy...
Honestly, there's no comparison. You're showing an actual working model vs a concept video. People are so worried about which company is copying who, when you should be worrying about who comes out with an actual product. Microsoft didn't invent the M.T. Screen, but they did find a way to expand it's capabilities in certain ways.
Who cares if M$ is copying anyone... Is there even a market for this new Surface?
Most restaurants have not transitioned to using PDA's to take orders... that is at least a reasonable solution as far as cost goes, it doesn't waste paper and speeds things up quite a bit. As technologically advanced as this piece of equipment is, it is not worth the cost to the businesses. email me epete05 at gmail
Im a full time linux user-did my Microsoft Windows to Linux transition.
Actually what Apple does is realize the potential of products and makes their own version of them for simple everyday use, or at least did it with the mouse, touchscreen, wifi, graphical user interface etcetera...
microsoft's business model: "by all means, hate us, hate everything about us, but you'll be handicapped with any other vendor"
apple's business model: "love us, believe in us, look at our snazzy advertising that has nothing to do with what we're offering. doesn't our stylizing prove we're great? ignore the actual product, just assume and believe it must be enlightened and superior."
Eventually all OS's will not be handicaped by microsoft. By the way, have you ever used a mac? 'cause thats not what i see when i use a mac. I find that both macs and windows have great GUIs and easy to use software, but now if i had to choose i would choose a mac, because of the much better hardware, faster, more stable software and good usability. My arguments for choosing windows would be: HUGE compatibility, you can actually choose your PC, and good usability. BTW search the beryl video
MS isn't crippling anyone, but only MS has over 100,000 coders working 40-hour weeks. Nobody including open source is even close, and there is no feature-complete alternative. For example, I can do a line/mesh hit test in 1 line with directx, and it would take hundreds of lines in OSX or linux. Also, mac hw is pc hw now, you can buy the same parts and much more from other vendors. For instance, the geforce 7950gtx in my xps m1710 outperforms the best macbook by roughly 4 times.
THe thing that sucks about mac is the fact that there is almost no software. You might wanna add that. Tell me were i can find DEAMON tools Bitcomet for the mac please. I am on a mac pro. I had to install windows (parrells doesn't work for shit had to use boot camp).
you obviously didn't use that mac pro long enough to realize that macs don't need DAEMON tools to manage and mount disc images. and bitcomet is trash compared to a number of good bit torrent applications for mac out there.
you obviously didn't use that mac pro long enough to realize that macs don't need DAEMON tools to manage and mount disc images. and bitcomet is trash compared to a number of good bit torrent applications for mac out there.
apple doesn't invent, they sell hype and lies. apple didn't invent or contribute anything to: touchscreen tech, search indexing, composited desktops, windowed interfaces, the desktop computer, one-piece desktop computers, cell phones, portable media players, audio and video editing software, or much else. they do replicate existing designs in an incredibly corny and cliched aesthetic, though.
Macintosh never copied any form of Linux. There was no form of Linux even close to the GUI and workability of the first Mac. Mac was acctually the first OS with a GUI.
Another movie this technology rips off was "Minority Report". Which had its own impractical way of accessing visual data. You have to be in pretty good physical shape to do all that two armed ballet that Cruise was doing. A lazer pointer would have worked better than reaching into a huge display and grabbing memory images. How lame. So Microsoft had this brainstorm after seeing some movies? At least Star Trek TNG, had those portable PAD devices.
This must be the most idiotic comparison... Who cares if it was taken from movies, there's an actual difference. Movie Magic = Fiction... Working demo's = ACTUALLY INVENTED/CREATED This multi-touch has been around since the late 80's under development.
If MS ripped off anyone's idea, it was Disney's movie "Tron" (1982). Check out David Warner's character's office desk displaying multimedia while he talked about the company. It was mainly voice operated, but displayed a keyboard for entering data. I can't see having to reach across a big table to do something simple, when a computer mouse has reduced hand and arm movement to a minimum. You need two hands to turn a photo around, and resize it?! Wow, thanks Microsoft.
i agree with Danamrich the 2 arent comparable....and if the are it would be like comparing Saints row to GTA3...they took an ideal and improved on it so FAR....And like ...yeah...plus ...that thing is crappy its at best comparable to a meeting over webcams and go to my pc.....
Cant really say MS ripped off Apples idea because like everything else they've done, some guy invented this, used by government and nasa, and MS licenses it to call their own. Typical. Apple on the other hand innovates, not imitates.
Ahhh, as if this isn't typical Microsoft, piggybacking off of Apple. The good news, Microsoft won't sell this to the public by any means. Anyone remember as a kid how often you ran into chairs, desks, and tables? Not to mention when things landed on a table while throwing stuff around the house. Hello broken 10,000$ table!
Today we do a lot of things NOT because we need them but because we CAN DO them. Doing them together with other people may be a new kind of entertainment. Who has the money and the room for a pool billiard may also be interested in owning this new surface... - and the guests CAN - "IF" they can (having the concerning stuff). There was a time where no-one had a "mouse". Or a "touch pad".
True, but those offered something that would revolutionize the business. This is simply a touch pad that you have to crouch over to use. My back is already aching just thinking of it.
Why does everyone keep bring up the price. Just a few years ago a basic laptop was $2,000. Now they are $500. The price of surface will drop. I think once the prices get lower bars will get em cuz then they dont have to hire as many workers.
and then there goes your get moeny quick job for teenagers, single mothers, etc. im not saying its not a good idea, but think, its microsoft that gets the moeney, and the people get money taken away.
Look: The video's suggestion is that MS Surface is the same idea Apple had 20 years ago. But one is an idea, and one is a product. The Surface, for better or worse, exists. The touch book is not the same thing, and if the device in that commercial was the right idea at the right time, it would have gone on sale then. This is an unfair and petty video comparison...albeit an interesting one. Long live good computing ideas and whoever can bring them to market so that everyone can benefit.
I see no difference in this than any other computer, except it doesn't use a keyboard or a mouse. Its touch screen, and a table. And of course it has some extra features, which will just have kids and adults stay inside and gain weight.
Let me put it another way: Apple clearly had the idea for a keyboard-free interface 20 years ago. But why has the company not made it? It's a GREAT idea. I'm glad they had it. But why is MS making something first? That's my only question. I HOPE Apple makes something like they promised...twenty years ago.
It's cool to see that similar ideas were toyed with two decades back...but why has Apple never actually produced anything beyond a commercial in that 20 years? Surface may be expensive, but it actually exists. I don't see a 20-year-old product that MS stole, as you're alleging; unfortunately, I see Apple hype for a product that didn't exist and likely never will.
It will. A foldable display: feasible. Touch-screen: Integrated. Drives will be in silicon and wireless accessible. Speech recognition: Must be in silicon. Keyboard/Touchpad: Pull-out.
But remember Vance Packard: They will give you all this in thin slices; making obsolescent each slice by and by... You have to pay for "generations".
everyone will be better if they can learn to use both operation systems and keep up with BOTH. I prefer mac of course, but if I can't use windows I am useless in todays business world.
That's the crucial point of view. I'm film making and I'm a businessman. Film making: There's nothing that I can do only with Apple instead of using a WIN PC. - BIZ: There is a lot that I can't do with Apple.
wow, you probably didnt get it, did ya? when you think a company thats built on stealing from others is good, then i pity you... the "zune" is shit btw, and the microsoft phone probably wont even be realeased
Wow, you're really up to date aren't you. How about you go to your local T-mobile store and check out how many phones are running an Apple OS vs. how many are running a Microsoft OS.
As for stealing from others, if you think Apple thinks all of their stuff up themselves you must be about 12 years old. They copied the WIMP stuff from Xerox and eventually paid for it and they bought the iphone UI stuff.
Do you know how many people can't wait to drop their Windows Mobile phones for an iPhone? Does Microsoft have their own phone? No. They just put their shitty OS on shitty phones made by other companies. Apple will dominate, get over it.
And I guarantee you that Microsoft has to pay royalties to Apple for patented technologies that first used in the Newton. Did you forget that Apple created the first PDA?
And this MS surface looks stupid. This is the thing thats gonna make the world fall apart. And whos gonna buy a 10,000$ table, that makes cool stuff when you put a glass a down?!
Maddox... What, is he like the captain of the PC cheerleading team? Go ahead and build your shitty PC. Remember, you're still stuck with BIOS and you're still using Windows. Bend over.
about sharing the same engine, you may be right there. a couple of the features do remind me of os x. maybe a joint venture? probably unlikely, considering each company is pretty famous for not sharing technology lol, but anything goes at the moment i guess.
surface is so damn cool. i mean, we all know the next thing apple bring out will wipe the floor with it, but congrats for microsoft for getting in first with something innovative and damn cool. kudos to them.
It's a tablet pc. Does it recognize what you put on it? No. Not the same thing you APPLE fanboys. Punk bitches just got owned (again). Take Steve Jobs dick out your mouth.
Owned? Exactly how did we get owned? This is a $10,000 machine the size of a compact car. Who's going to buy this? Compare that with the number of people who are going to be waiting in line on the 29th to get their hands on the iPhone. I think *you* got owned.
Well the iphone is out. Why dont u tell me how good it is? I am sorry if ur out of battery. Personaly i dont understand why people compare apple and microsoft. One makes computers the other makes adds (apple makes adds). I perfer having a computer. But, i got a Mac Pro (dam good computer, just cant do anything besides run Mac os x and the limited software thats out there for it)
Thanks
If you get a mac run boot camp and install windows
Rumors tell that VISTA is only the trash can content of the Surface development. Next might be a mongrel between VISTA and SURFACE for new touch TFT monitors and a touch tablet for your living room that enables you to handle "things" from your multimedia cube also on Plasma screens or using a beamer... And so on.
Greetings from Vance Packard who uncovered the pratice of artificial obsolescence.
If you're not an Apple fan, what the hell are you a fan of?? Apple envy is more and more rampant, as they leave Windows Frankenstein garbage further and further behind.
Lame. The basic methods of control haven't changed and neither has the interface because it's the best way to go. Apple lacks business sense, and M$ knows how to fuck them with that while using reusing Apple's small improvements. That's the free market for you.

i agree with Danamrich the 2 arent comparable....and if the are it would be like comparing Saints row to GTA3...they took an ideal and improved on it so FAR....And like ...yeah...plus ...that thing is crappy its at best comparable to a meeting over webcams and go to my pc.....
Braidedgamer 4 years ago
Cant really say MS ripped off Apples idea because like everything else they've done, some guy invented this, used by government and nasa, and MS licenses it to call their own. Typical. Apple on the other hand innovates, not imitates.

I totally would never put ANYTHING on that table. I'll need ANOTHER table put stuff on.
DavidAWA 4 years ago
Ahhh, as if this isn't typical Microsoft, piggybacking off of Apple. The good news, Microsoft won't sell this to the public by any means. Anyone remember as a kid how often you ran into chairs, desks, and tables? Not to mention when things landed on a table while throwing stuff around the house. Hello broken 10,000$ table!
XythAdar 4 years ago
Today we do a lot of things NOT because we need them but because we CAN DO them. Doing them together with other people may be a new kind of entertainment. Who has the money and the room for a pool billiard may also be interested in owning this new surface... - and the guests CAN - "IF" they can (having the concerning stuff). There was a time where no-one had a "mouse". Or a "touch pad".
allinoneman 4 years ago
True, but those offered something that would revolutionize the business. This is simply a touch pad that you have to crouch over to use. My back is already aching just thinking of it.
XythAdar 4 years ago
I doubt they would design a house hold product that would easily break like that. Glass tables are out now and they are very sturdy.
groovdafied 4 years ago
Why does everyone keep bring up the price. Just a few years ago a basic laptop was $2,000. Now they are $500. The price of surface will drop. I think once the prices get lower bars will get em cuz then they dont have to hire as many workers.
Epc830 4 years ago
and then there goes your get moeny quick job for teenagers, single mothers, etc. im not saying its not a good idea, but think, its microsoft that gets the moeney, and the people get money taken away.
TheRealDj2quick 4 years ago
Look: The video's suggestion is that MS Surface is the same idea Apple had 20 years ago. But one is an idea, and one is a product. The Surface, for better or worse, exists. The touch book is not the same thing, and if the device in that commercial was the right idea at the right time, it would have gone on sale then. This is an unfair and petty video comparison...albeit an interesting one. Long live good computing ideas and whoever can bring them to market so that everyone can benefit.
DanAmrich 4 years ago
I see no difference in this than any other computer, except it doesn't use a keyboard or a mouse. Its touch screen, and a table. And of course it has some extra features, which will just have kids and adults stay inside and gain weight.
bluehairman 4 years ago
Let me put it another way: Apple clearly had the idea for a keyboard-free interface 20 years ago. But why has the company not made it? It's a GREAT idea. I'm glad they had it. But why is MS making something first? That's my only question. I HOPE Apple makes something like they promised...twenty years ago.
DanAmrich 4 years ago
Uhm... the iPhone?
MacGeeek 4 years ago
It's cool to see that similar ideas were toyed with two decades back...but why has Apple never actually produced anything beyond a commercial in that 20 years? Surface may be expensive, but it actually exists. I don't see a 20-year-old product that MS stole, as you're alleging; unfortunately, I see Apple hype for a product that didn't exist and likely never will.
DanAmrich 4 years ago
"...and likely never will."

@DanAmrich oh man I wonder if when they released the ipad you ate these works in your head

everyone will be better if they can learn to use both operation systems and keep up with BOTH. I prefer mac of course, but if I can't use windows I am useless in todays business world.

You got it!
BIZ!
That's the crucial point of view. I'm film making and I'm a businessman. Film making: There's nothing that I can do only with Apple instead of using a WIN PC. - BIZ: There is a lot that I can't do with Apple.

wow, you probably didnt get it, did ya? when you think a company thats built on stealing from others is good, then i pity you... the "zune" is shit btw, and the microsoft phone probably wont even be realeased
diekappe 4 years ago
Wow, you're really up to date aren't you. How about you go to your local T-mobile store and check out how many phones are running an Apple OS vs. how many are running a Microsoft OS.
As for stealing from others, if you think Apple thinks all of their stuff up themselves you must be about 12 years old. They copied the WIMP stuff from Xerox and eventually paid for it and they bought the iphone UI stuff.
RTURNERO 4 years ago
Do you know how many people can't wait to drop their Windows Mobile phones for an iPhone? Does Microsoft have their own phone? No. They just put their shitty OS on shitty phones made by other companies. Apple will dominate, get over it.
MacGeeek 4 years ago
And I guarantee you that Microsoft has to pay royalties to Apple for patented technologies that first used in the Newton. Did you forget that Apple created the first PDA?
MacGeeek 4 years ago
Actually. I think a patent only lasts 11 years.
And this MS surface looks stupid. This is the thing thats gonna make the world fall apart. And whos gonna buy a 10,000$ table, that makes cool stuff when you put a glass a down?!

I think Maddox cleared the point a long while ago...
Anyway, I'll stick to PC as long I can build my machines myself instead of being ass-raped with apple's prices

yeah just get arse raped by a dodgy operating system instead lol
wombatau 4 years ago
Maddox... What, is he like the captain of the PC cheerleading team? Go ahead and build your shitty PC. Remember, you're still stuck with BIOS and you're still using Windows. Bend over.
MacGeeek 4 years ago
All this hostility, Apple must be doing something right to get attacked in this way.
Personally, I love my Macs . . . all four of them.
awksedgreep 4 years ago
@wombatau ,
are you sure?
I think the Thingy that Aplle may present will share the same engine with MS Surface and be more sophisticated while MS may act more biz oriented.
Same engine, better RFI, lower costs...
Sit back'n vatch watt stuffa kumm out...
allinoneman 4 years ago
about sharing the same engine, you may be right there. a couple of the features do remind me of os x. maybe a joint venture? probably unlikely, considering each company is pretty famous for not sharing technology lol, but anything goes at the moment i guess.
wombatau 4 years ago
surface is so damn cool. i mean, we all know the next thing apple bring out will wipe the floor with it, but congrats for microsoft for getting in first with something innovative and damn cool. kudos to them.
wombatau 4 years ago
It's a tablet pc. Does it recognize what you put on it? No. Not the same thing you APPLE fanboys. Punk bitches just got owned (again). Take Steve Jobs dick out your mouth.
JOHNWAYNE1920 4 years ago
ahahahaah, why are u so angry about apple?
ded777lok 4 years ago
Owned? Exactly how did we get owned? This is a $10,000 machine the size of a compact car. Who's going to buy this? Compare that with the number of people who are going to be waiting in line on the 29th to get their hands on the iPhone. I think *you* got owned.
MacGeeek 4 years ago
Well the iphone is out. Why dont u tell me how good it is? I am sorry if ur out of battery. Personaly i dont understand why people compare apple and microsoft. One makes computers the other makes adds (apple makes adds). I perfer having a computer. But, i got a Mac Pro (dam good computer, just cant do anything besides run Mac os x and the limited software thats out there for it)
Thanks

Rumors tell that VISTA is only the trash can content of the Surface development. Next might be a mongrel between VISTA and SURFACE for new touch TFT monitors and a touch tablet for your living room that enables you to handle "things" from your multimedia cube also on Plasma screens or using a beamer... And so on.
Greetings from Vance Packard who uncovered the pratice of artificial obsolescence.

If you're not an Apple fan, what the hell are you a fan of?? Apple envy is more and more rampant, as they leave Windows Frankenstein garbage further and further behind.
dca3000 4 years ago
Lame. The basic methods of control haven't changed and neither has the interface because it's the best way to go. Apple lacks business sense, and M$ knows how to fuck them with that while using reusing Apple's small improvements. That's the free market for you.
