I use site: a lot daily and find it a quick way to identify errors. You can quickly perform a check of the Page Title syntax being used and the URL structure in place.

I also find that when I perform a site: search on a domain and the homepage isn't the first result, it's a signal that there is a problem in some way with the homepage. Generally this is due to an inability to crawl the page, low content or suspect links.

Do you really mean short paths ("short URIs close to the root")? Isn't number of hops (links) from from the root (or most visited entry point) way more significant?
