@rblaustein Just cracked it? If you read my full original 2007 notes (under the clip) you'll see both the soundtrack musicians and the personnel on camera listed there.
I know exactly who this is: Jack LaRue Piano, Vaughn Streeter, Tenor, Al "Cake" Wickard, Drums. Shifty Henry Bass. I used to see these guy aound jazz joints in so cal such as Peacock Alley on 8th and Morrie Glick's Melody Club on Slauson.
That is NOT Illinois Jacquet in the D.O.A. movie. Oddly enough, there is an actor in the movie with the last name Jaquet (no c), but he has the part of a doctor. NO WAY IS THAT ILLINOIS! DUMMY.
Listen from about :27 to :42. Of course, little else sounds like it although he may throw in another short reference or two to it. Check out charley barnet's "singing telegram" video on this site.
Talking to a friend of mine who frequented jazz clubs in the '50's, he once stopped at a joint on central avenue to hear an unknown named dinah washington. She had 3 or 4 saxes backing her and they moved liked james Van Streeter in this clip and never missed a note or a beat..
"I'm pretty sure this isn't Illinois Jacquet on screen." It isn't. James Von Streeter is the tenor player on screen, and Maxwell Davis is actually playing the tenor on the soundtrack.
Actually, I have devised a fairly basic sort of time machine and to prove it works I'm the one at the end with scarf and hat. At present it's only a single seater but I'm currently developing a two seater. I'll let you know when it's ready.
quite a difference in illionois jazz and new orleans jazz........never knew that....guess its all in how you raised..........love the 40 s

I can hear a "reference" at 27 to 41 but I still think its not Cherokee.

It could be called "jive Crazy" or "The Fisherman," evidently by the Maxwell Davis Band.

If only they had kept the band's original performance instead of over-dubbing the Maxwell Davis band. :(
