  • quite a difference in illionois jazz and new orleans jazz........never knew that....guess its all in how you raised..........love the 40 s

  • @Lupine22 - I just located this video one (1) hour ago. I didn't know it even existed before then. I found all that info on google.

  • This band, called The Fishermen in "D.O.A." were actually The Wig Poppers. James von Sttreeter, sax; Teddy Buckner, trumpet, Shifty Henry, bass; Cake Witchard, drums, and Ray Laurie, piano. Another unnamed band played the music on the soundtrack when The Fishermen's music couldn't be used in the soundtrack. • Just cracked this case, Bob. This band, called The Fishermen in "D.O.A." were actually The Wig Popper. • @rblaustein Just cracked it? If you read my full original 2007 notes (under the clip) you'll see both the soundtrack musicians and the personnel on camera listed there.

  • I know exactly who this is: Jack LaRue Piano, Vaughn Streeter, Tenor, Al "Cake" Wickard, Drums. Shifty Henry Bass. I used to see these guy aound jazz joints in so cal such as Peacock Alley on 8th and Morrie Glick's Melody Club on Slauson.

  • @stevearinoten4 True - but they are not the ones heard on the soundtrack. See my introductory notes.

  • Beatniks and negroes!

  • What movie publicity said this was Illinois?

  • great, any chance you could upload shanghai shuffle by fletcher henderson?

  • Not Illinois but band is good.

  • hahaha the audience man wth!! lookin like their about to ejaculate. get it benjamin!!

    "coo,cool,reaaallly cool !!"

  • Only in Frisco man, go man go!!!!!

  • this is NOT illinois jacquet or big jay mcneely... those are both myths... jadie carson is the bandleader.

  • Thanks, but this has already been well discussed in the comments, over a year ago:

    Personnel on camera:

Teddy Buckner (tp), Von Streeter (ts), Ray LaRue (p), Shifty Henry (b), Cake Witchard (dr)

    Soundtrack personnel:

Ernie Royal (tp), Maxwell Davis (ts), Ray Turner (p), George Boujie (b), Lee Young (dr)

  • 1:40 LMAO

could they have gotten a more square crowd

Check Wesley Snipes on set though

  • 1:42 Howard from the halifax adverts

  • The crowd are so damn cringe-worthy!

  • When those colored fellas get to cookin'... boy, there's nothing stopin' em! Ha!!

  • Hahahah...

  • You got that right jack, this jives man. I would have liked to have lived in San Francisco in the 50s Jazz and Poetry.

  • That is NOT Illinois Jacquet in the D.O.A. movie. Oddly enough, there is an actor in the movie with the last name Jaquet (no c), but he has the part of a doctor. NO WAY IS THAT ILLINOIS! DUMMY.

  • But you are not going to tell us who it is? This has already been well discussed here:

    Personnel on camera:

Teddy Buckner (tp), Von Streeter (ts), Ray LaRue (p), Shifty Henry (b), Cake Witchard (dr)

    Soundtrack personnel:

Ernie Royal (tp), Maxwell Davis (ts), Ray Turner (p), George Boujie (b), Lee Young (dr)

  • Might as well be Illinois. Whoever he is, he plays in the same style and one BADASS TENORMAN.

  • Really exciting stuff.

  • That's teddy buckner on trumpet.

  • Now this is music.

  • I looked all over iTunes! HELP!

  • What's this song called?

  • cherokee?

  • blow your socks off?

    Cherokee it is not.

  • blow your socks off?

    Cherokee it is not.

  • Listen from about :27 to :42. Of course, little else sounds like it although he may throw in another short reference or two to it. Check out charley barnet's "singing telegram" video on this site.

  • I can hear a "reference" at 27 to 41 but I still think its not Cherokee.

  • It could be called "jive Crazy" or "The Fisherman," evidently by the Maxwell Davis Band.

  • From savelonp,

    Personnel on camera:

Teddy Buckner (tp), Von Streeter (ts), Ray LaRue (p), Shifty Henry (b), Cake Witchard (dr)

    Soundtrack personnel:

Ernie Royal (tp), Maxwell Davis (ts), Ray Turner (p), George Boujie (b), Lee Young (dr)

Check out hip jive crazy at this site. Maybe hip jive crazy is the song title.

  • Go, Cats, Go!

  • If only they had kept the band's original performance instead of over-dubbing the Maxwell Davis band. :(

  • It's almost to move the sax around like that without breaking your teeth on the mouthpeice.

  • Talking to a friend of mine who frequented jazz clubs in the '50's, he once stopped at a joint on central avenue to hear an unknown named dinah washington. She had 3 or 4 saxes backing her and they moved liked james Van Streeter in this clip and never missed a note or a beat..

  • 2:00-2:02 is so disturbing! And Funny!

  • I'm pretty sure this isn't Illinois Jacquet on screen. Does anyone know what movie this came from?

  • "D.O.A." (1949) -- read the notes.

  • "I'm pretty sure this isn't Illinois Jacquet on screen." It isn't. James Von Streeter is the tenor player on screen, and Maxwell Davis is actually playing the tenor on the soundtrack.

  • Actually, I have devised a fairly basic sort of time machine and to prove it works I'm the one at the end with scarf and hat. At present it's only a single seater but I'm currently developing a two seater. I'll let you know when it's ready.

  • When is somebody going to invent a time machine so I can go back and hear these guys.

btw does anyone know names of other musicians in the band?

  • I DIG

  • This" CRAZY MAN CRAZY " ! This is my kinda diggin ! Excellent be bop blowin'
