My Chesapeake (and many others) regularly swim under water....sometimes just for the heck of it~ lol

My labs put their head under the water all the time, one will swim with her head under to check things out for up to 5 seconds at a time. If you look at a labs paws they are actually well webbed and my girls can swim quite a distance and very fast. For all the "that's cruel etc etc etc" types, you need to understand that many breeds love the water and are very happy diving. Top video I really enjoyed it.

I think that when they are teaching themselves to go underwater, they probably get water in their noses a few times but they learn just like you did. Im sure like you mentioned its a natural reflex .

@Hurrijeff yes, its actually one of the defining attributes of mammals. all mammals have a reflex when submersion of the face is sensed, the nasal cavities close. if you get water in them when you arent ready for it, you snort some before the nostrils lock.

@Wolfquestloverful Scared Pittbull update: he went bananas like when he heard the splash and jumped the fence.....Found him 15 mins. later in someone's garden. homeowner was basically giving the "?" expression on her face until i arrived. she also noticed it was a pit, got a tad bit nervous when my pit turned to her, and stayed still. no harm was done there except he mushed the lady's petunia flowers. instead of scared, she was annoyed with him, like every other neighbor where i stay....T_T

Obsession131 said that if a dog could handle water, it would not have the reflex of shaking the water of the fur, but this is nonsense, since every animal has the reflex of shaking their fur after being in the water, even beevers or something, and now don't tell me that then beevers are not made for water, too :P
