They seemed to put everything else ahead of their own priority, because they believed in a "mantle" handed to them by the precursors to protect all life in the galaxy. Humans were actually the ancient enemy of the forerunners, long ago defeated back to tribal people. The Forerunners decided that humans were to be their legacy because Humans and Forerunners are extremely similar, but are not the same species. However, interestingly enough, the Precursors made the forerunners before humans, but did indeed make both species. Check out Halopedian.
