You can even check out wiki for a list of examples, Japan and Russia teach that Europe and Asia are one continent called Eurasia and if you take a college geography class in the United States they teach the same thing now. I was taught that the world has 6 continents ( America, Antartica, Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia). But different people around the globe learn it in different ways, English speaking countries and China learn the 7 continent model, which splits America in North and South. Russia, because they belong to 2 different continents learn a 6 continent model which splits the Americas and creates Eurasia. An uncommon 4 continent model also exists which creates a Super continent called Afro-Eurasia.

Columbus discovered the americas, as in plural, because there is north america and south america, not just culturally, but geographically. first of all the landmasses of north and south america are far enough and distinct enough to be considered different continents.

You can even check out wiki for a list of examples, Japan and Russia teach that Europe and Asia are one continent called Eurasia and if you take a college geography class in the United States they teach the same thing now. Latin America teaches that its all one continent.

That is beyond me, but just to clear up, the use of the name "United States" may be ambiguous (because there are many other "United States" like Mexico) but it's an invalid consideration since it's even more ambiguous the use of "American". Those who hold this view tend to forget that America is considered by many a continent, while there is no continent with the name Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

North and South America are on 2 completely different plates separated by water, therefore 2 different continents. And no a Brazilian isn't an American, they are Brazilian. @Qbano21 the panama canal separates north and south america. GEOLOGY even tells us they are 2 different continents, they are 2 completely different huge landmasses on different continental plates. If we said that they were the same continents on the basis of panama then the same could be said about Africa and Europe/Asia. When they created the term (after an italian sailor who worked for the portuguese crown) they referred to the mass of land that they had found beyond the atlantic ocean. First, to Venezuela, then, to South America, finally, North America. So why, between all the countrys, the US citizens usurpated the term for themselves?

I was taught that the world has 6 continents ( America, Antartica, Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia). But different people around the globe learn it in different ways, English speaking countries and China learn the 7 continent model, which splits America in North and South. Russia, because they belong to 2 different continents learn a 6 continent model which splits the Americas and creates Eurasia. An uncommon 4 continent model also exists which creates a Super continent called Afro-Eurasia.

@anonymous10001000 "The Americas" is plural in english language. In spanish and portuguese América is singular. And, sorry to remember, the word was first used to name Venezuela, after an italian sailor that worked for the portuguese crown: Americo Vespuci. No relation to the US at all. So yes, the word America is used in english in a different way: the wrong way.

@jacac Americans do not use it the wrong way, I'm half American, and half Brazilian, in Brazil we have always said "America do sul" (south america) and "America do norte" (north america) and whenever i talk to Brazilians or hispanics, we all use "Americano" when referring to people from the US. noone gets offended because it's just a name, and most people are too nationalistic to even want to be called American

Legally speaking within the several states of the American Union "America" is just a continent, hence "OF America". There is no country, nation or state called America. Although most from the United States refer to themselves as Americans when discussing their nationality it is not true.
The "United States" is the name of the Federal Government for the several States. It is also a corporation.

I think he meant that your example of the United Kingdom was wrongly used. As The United States of America is only one country (US) whereas when you say United Kingdom you're taking into account Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom is called like that and not the UK of Europe because that`s the name they chose, instead of you, the founders decided to call your country United States OF America. Also, is just way too stupid that two "continents" (as you say they are) like North America and South America share the same name as it is America. North America Central America and South America are just subcontinents.

Latin American = those who is related to a american country which primary spoken language is a latin-spoken language, like spanish, portuguese or french.
A Brazilian is all of these ones: brazilian, south-american, iberoamerixan, latinamerican and american.
A mexican is one of these ones: north-american, spanish or hispanic american, iberoamerican, latinamerican and american.
But if someone of them are 100% indigenous, then is north or southamerican, nativeamerican and american.

Although if you consider them as separate continents, the REAL THING is that the adding of the two shapes a great landmass called in YOUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE America or Americas, and accepts the toponym of American, so pls give up to negate the evidence.
And what do you think about The Organization of American States? this means, an organization of a group of countries which are all americans.
Spanish denominations are infinite simple, coherent and accurate than awkward english.

There is no problem for me to say that USA is a great country, I don't hate USA because it has many many many good things, and I support USA against communism and terrorism but as any country, it has defects and Education is bestialy poor.
These songs are english-spoken songs, if you spoke spanish, you could find spanish-spoken songs which deal to America, eg

Education in USA isn´t poor acctually, the problem is that education in USA has to much Focus on Thenselves and they don´t learn anything about "general culture" or global geography, it´s a way of manipulation (but this kind of behavior started in the cold war- mabe before, when USA was Isolated).
Acctually it's smells like a "communism" education system, "you must be pround of your own country, we are the best..." they are used to learn in this therms.

As some people said: why is there the American States Organization? If what you say was correct, it would be the North and South American States Organization, hmm it seems is not like how you say. Also somebody said this: why in the olimpic games are only five rings? Because each one represents ONE continent! AMERICA, AFRICA, ASIA, OCEANIA and EUROPE. It's an interesting thing because Quebec as we know, is francophone. But international community does not consider it latinamerican.
In Africa, french-speaking countries are the francophony Africa. Why not naming french, portuguese and spanish spoken african countries as Latinafrica like its equivalent in America? No, community says that these countries are francophone, so I suppose it's prefered to name Quebec as francophone instead of latinamerican like african case.

Oceania is not a continent. Australia is and it is also the name of a country. America or the Americas are the western hemisphere. The Americas (plural) are a land mass, and consist of North America, South America, Central America and the surrounding Island groups. But America as in the Untied States of is a country just as the Commonwealth of Australia aka Australia, the same name as the continent is a country. Google the word America and see for yourself.
