I could argue that 10th century Frankish pattern welded swords were the greatest in history, or 17th century Wootz from India. Whatever. I just think such assumptions do not belong there. "Greatness" is a very subjective matter.
@Protherium this kind of bladesmith technique still survive to this day. Some other sword beside Katana are indeed "great", but only limited of them - which known to retain traditional making like this example - are considered "surviving".
Another example of traditional and historic bladesmith that still survive to this day is Kriss. Even Kriss are commonly rare in today's world. Only Katana who still retain such glory to this day like in the past.
